Years ago my friend couldn’t afford pictures for the house. She went to the library and she was able to borrow pictures a month at a time. She had something new to hang every month. Today she and her husband are retired and are well able to afford anything they could want. They invested in real estate by paying off a small house, renting it and moving to another. They did that for 3 houses and now have a beautiful home for their retirement all paid for and income from the other 2 homes. One smart and frugal gal!

Decorating for free or very cheap is one of my favorite hobbies... it’s amazing what people give away. My biggest score was a nearly new red leather couch and loveseat that an older couple was getting rid of because they were having their son move in and liked his furniture better. They just wanted someone to pick it up and take it away!

I just retired in January. I had a bad fall the end of June so my sister came three days a week to help me. She dug in and we decluttered 45 years of accumulated stuff! I got new flooring and paint. We bought most of the new furniture off of Facebook Market Place! Can’t believe the nice things that people get rid of for practically nothing. I’m so happy with the outcome. Loved your video tour!

I haven't bought anything brand new in years. We have been married for 55 years and most of our furniture is from our adult children when they buy new furniture and the old is still nice.. The pictures and paintings on our walls were all gifts and personal memories. We have started to give our children heirlooms for Christmas and I made albums for our two sons filled with things from my dad's WWII years when he was a medic in many countries. So I figure by the time we won't be able to be in our home anymore nobody will have anything to fight over...not that they would..😊

I bought my dining room and daughter’s bedroom from people who were moving away. The furniture was in great condition and it still is. I got pictures and paintings to hang at thrift stores and Freecycle. I once went to a garage sale that had clocks new in the box. The woman’s mother worked for the Elgin company. I got a beautiful clock for $8 and saw it in a store a few weeks later for $40. I’ve been shopping for bargains all my life. We live well and save money.

I love your house! My color palette is the same as yours. Most of my decorations come from thrift stores too. I look at Pottery Barn, etc, and then go find similar items that others have cast off for pennies on the dollar. I've had our living room furniture for 20+ years. I think the trick to shopping second hand is to be able to see the potential in things. And spray paint is my friend!

Catching up on videos I missed, and came across this gem :-) When my boys were still in grade school I became fascinated with 'country curtains' ~ but definitely didn't have the income to pay for them. I was doing crafts and woodworking, had a garden, and I got by without any debt. I had lots of unbleached muslin and quarter yard sections of 'country' type cottons, spools of ribbon of all sorts ... and a glue gun (no sewing machine!). I found a set of floor length curtains that I absolutely loved, that were priced at $95 a pair (valance extra) in the early 80s. I made my own set and they lasted for 6 years, glued together without any sewing. Best of all they cost me a total of about $18 for three sets! I made all my own shelves, cupboards, etc. since I spent my time making them anyway. My landlord was impressed enough to have me make shelves for his wife (built-ins) in exchange for several months rent. He even provided the lumber. You make do and get creative when you like pretty stuff but really can't afford it. Loved this video!

One thing that always intrigued me. If a person is really true to their likes, everything holds together no matter how eclectic. I had a friend with a very old dog. They decided to purchase new furniture only after he died. Meanwhile for years she collected paintings and knick nacks and pillows and stuff and stored it upstairs. He lived much longer than they anticipated. The dog died. They bought a new sofa, chair and rug. She pulled everything out of storage and it all looked great together. As if it was planned. So much fun to see your home.
