I remember going to a coin shop when I was new and I was buying 1 oz bars, and I bought two old ones, and one that I didn’t realize at the time, it looked nice but it was a German silver bar. I asked the coin shop owner how much for all three, he charged me a dollar over spot and he saw me checking out the German silver one and I even said to him, wow this one is really nice. He just agreed and I paid and left. I found out a couple weeks later that it’s just clad and not silver so I went back to him to sell it back to him to see what would happen and unfortunately he told me that it’s not silver and he could give me a dollar for it. I actually had taken a picture of the the bars in my car and I told him that I bought it from him. He denied it. I said okay I have the picture of it and outside his shop. I finally got up and said I guess you don’t want my business. He ended up giving me most of my money back because he said it’s not worth losing your business over this. I understand the frustration of coin dealers but I also see them ripping customers off. I know this not what your video is about but for some reason it reminds of that one coin shop. He was usually really helpful and cool to talk to. I know he remembers selling it to me. It was in his display of 90% and rounds for a weeks.

Hi Daniel, One piece of information which clarifies the details about Washington 'facing the wrong way' on the new obverse design of the Washington quarters is that the new design was created and won by Laura Gardin Fraser in a competition by the Commission of Fine Arts in 1931. Unfortunately, the the current Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon, rejected that design in favor of the one submitted by John Flanagan. The first time which Frazer's design appeared on a US coin was the $5 commemorative issued in 1999 for the bicentennial of George Washington's death in 1799. Whether or not Mellon rejected Fraser's design because she was a woman and selected Flanagan's design because he was a man is something we'll never know. Sexism was rampant during that era.

@jamesbuccigross6920Ай бұрын
That is my biggest pet peeve about coins on ebay, any wheat cent with out a mint mark is immediately "ultra rare missing mint mark", with the most ridiculous prices, usually something totally absurd like $3,000 and up. And you see so much of this. What's even worse, occasionally some novice collectors actually buy them. And every one of the sellers has obviously phony testimonials about how pleased a fictitious buyer is with a coin purchased from the seller, and how they would buy from them again and highly recommend them. Every time I see something like this, it makes me want to vomit. I would think such blatant misrepresentation could be considered fraud, but I'm not an attorney, so what do I know? But this has to fall under some criminal statute, at least in my opinion. These unscrupulous sellers do the hobby the greatest disservice.

I understand why dealers are hesitant to buy some of the items you've shown. Some items will stay on the shelves for months, if not years, unless you lot it out. However, I disagree with your position on restored date Buffalo nickels. There are some collectors who cannot afford sound examples of key date coins, so they purchase these coins at heavily discounted prices to fill a hole in their collections. I've purchased dateless Buffalo nickels and restore the dates on the mintmarked coins. I've found several key dates, such as 1913-D II, 1913-S II, 1914-D and 1921-S. I even restored a date on a 1918/7-D, which is in my own collection. One coin I haven't found yet is the 1916/1916 Double Die. I've seen low grade examples of this coin, including restored dates, which still sell for a lot of money because they've been certified. Some collectors in my local Coin Club were really happy I've been able to supply these key dates and some semi-key dates to fill in the holes in their collections.
@CoinHELPuАй бұрын
I’ve found some key dates too and even did a video on them, but unless they’re the main key dates I just stay away from them. I just have too many and it’s unsightly to me. I do get what you’re saying though and I don’t disagree completely.

Daniel, we need more patient educators like you across the hobby. The internet was a blessing and a curse to the hobby. Educators and predators exist in any industry dealing with $$$. For those coin dealers not wanting to or patient enough to work with sellers, try establishing a contact list of buyers likely interested. Connect the 2 parties.

Junk silver or 90% silver has been replaced w/fancy term "constitutional silver." When or who started using that term?

It's an older term than you think, it's not fancy either, but comes from the clause in our Constitution on Congress regulating and creating money.

I’m curious, if you identify a coin that someone brings in as a fake are you obliged legally to clip the coin for example or do you simply inform them and refuse to take it? Does it depend if it’s a Government backed coin? Thanks, great video as always.

There’s no legal obligation to destroy fakes/counterfeits. It’s usually done so it doesn’t get back out into the wild.

Mexican Libs tend to be the most expensive silver coins, always trade with a premium; higher than ASEs. They're not too hard to find. Online dealers usually have them in stock.
@pesounboxer1507Ай бұрын
Im in Utah, I used to see them all the time at the LCS, with very little premium, but lately the premium on these skyrocketed. Looks like not too many dealers took Libertads seriously up to only a few years back. It used to be cheaper to buy them locally than online.
