Just going to address comments in a pinned post instead of replying to people individually - I've always recommended the 800p version of the AYANEO2 - 1080p and 1600p aren't ideal for 6800U and I do run sub resolutions often. But 720p on Win4 looks way better than 800p on WM2 - the reality is that only hardcore people like us here are buying Chinese handhelds and we can assist people with how to run things and set expectations. - If you go to the GPD Discord and put my name in the search field and then also "800p" You'll see all of my receipts where I've been saying 6800U is best at 800p. I haven't changed my stance - The reason I am addressing 1080p120 is that it's absurd in two directions. There are going to be exceedingly few modern AAA games that will run at 1080p120. Let alone using massive sub resolutions. Also in the first three minutes of this video, I am openly declaring that I'm very happy this device is coming to market and more competition is best for all of us. But I DO expect more out of Asus if they are going to make a handheld and just make a device with "Big number = better" Also my open questions about the device aren't good or bad. They are just questions I wish Asus would have answered rather than marketing numbers stuff. I know the title and thumbnail are sensational. The context of what I'm actually saying is how I feel.

Linus slipped up and said that the cpu inside is Zen 4. The 6800u is Zen 3. This device has likely a 7040 APU. That has Zen 4 and RDNA 3+ (4nm process node). That will give about 2TFlops of power at 15w. And about 5 at 35w. They will not sell if for 800 in a million years though. This will be 1k+ device.

@@Heldermaior I doubt it, arm chips are a bit thurther ahead in the graphics and battery department than x64 integrated graphics due to the constant need for moar performance every year in phones. There is no real driving force in terms of laptop igpus. For the most part I can see a switch 2 being more powerful than a deck. In 2024 they wouldn’t even be selling at a loss if they do that.

Why is it that, Steam Deck owners seem so adamant about wanting competition in the space, but when it finally comes, so reluctant to admit the competition could be better? It's one thing to be skeptical of a manufacturers claims (I am in this case), but another to wholly reject any advancements in specs. Edit: I am not refering to anyone in or around this video, like the comments, it's just something I have noticed, in other conversations about such devices on the internet.

To me price differences aside, it feels like the steam deck was more thought out. As opposed to just out-specing the competition, valve meticulously though of what logically makes sense for handheld PC gaming and focused on making sure what was included in the steam deck actually had practicality to the everyday consumer. The Ally feels like Asus said "just out spec them. They have 800p? We have 1080p. They have 60hz? We have 120hz". They didn't stop and think how practical these features are to handhelds or whether the end users everyday experience would be meaningfully improved by these features. The fact that they didn't even think to put a track pad of some kind on the device to make navigating windows easier speaks volumes of how important meaningful user end experience is to them.

Yeah I think anybody would've preferred trackpads over a 120hz screen, 120hz isn't even that good unless it's a stable 120fps (good luck on modern games) or you have VRR (which I guarantee this doesn't have)

So, the screen will be landscape. How do I know? They're using 16:9 1080p 7" screen. Coincidentally GPD is building a win mini with 16:9 1080p 7" landscape screen. Back when gpd pocket lineup released, there were no 16:9 1080p 7" screens, so there has been a new panel made, which is not a native tablet panel, and potentially actually manufactured for these devices.

You're concluding without using the device itself. Plus all of those Chinese made handhelds also have poor battery life at 60hz. And maybe the custom AMD APU in the Ally is more efficient, you'll never know. I for one am happy to have a 120hz panel, even if the battery life is even a bit lower than Steam Deck. Finally, I can play 120hz on old triple A games I bought on sale which I haven't played.

I think Destiny 2 could run at 90 fps at 18-22W. Currently, running it unlocked on a WinDeck will get like 80fps highs and 45fps lows. 50% better than that will already get you close to a stable 90 at 15W, then you could just push a bit more power to get over the finish line. As for 120Hz, I see no reason why esports titles like Overwatch 2 and CS 2 won’t be able to hit it below 20W.

With the potential power draw, I could see these being sold in stores right next to Best Buy's store brand 'Insignia' power banks to help the margins. PCs don't make a lot of money for places like Best Buy, but you're more likely to come in to get some nice higher-margin accessories (or software back, like in the day when I found out about this) from that store. A lot of the power stuff I have for my Steam Deck is actually from Best Buy, so It shouldn't be to hard of an up-sale.

Really glad to see this video from you. I felt like I was taking crazy pills while watching the LTT video. People have been saying FOREVER that they want a Switch or Steam Deck with a 1080p screen... but I've always felt that it just doesn't make sense. 720/800p is simply the *correct* choice in my eyes, as far as tradeoff between visual fidelity and performance. I also had the impression that ASUS was just looking to "one-up" Valve, by running down a series of tech specs and being one-step better. Which doesn't necessarily lead to a better device - there's very good reasons why both Valve and Nintendo made that decision, after all! Having said that, I'm really happy to see another big player enter the space. Goes to show that the handheld PC market has a bright future, and lots of people are taking notice.

I wanted to like the Steam Deck to be honest but there are two simple reasons I can not use it and thats why I sold it after one month: 1. I got pain in my hands after several minutes holding it every time I wanted to play with it. 2. The fan noise. Im not a retro gamer so I always had this thing at high fan level. From what I've seen so far I really like the ASUS ROG ALLY except that you need to buy their gpu if you want to plug in a 4090 for example. However I really like the competition and I wonder where this stuff goes in a few years. Theres one more benefit of the 120hz display. Those are all legitimately good points. But I think there's still more performance in a lot of other different scenarios that having 120 Hertz panel would still be enormously advantageous. With a ton of overhead to spare.! Emulation for 1. Video playback that supports that refresh rate. And in a pretty lightweight game Counter-Strike. Or even Fortnite @ Low. You'll be at 120 with room to spare. It may not be at the highest settings. But it's achievable. And as an enthusiast product. Having the option available is completely appropriate. I mean you are looking at it with s*** colored glasses on. Stop hating. And start appreciating.!

No. I'm pretty sure you're misunderstanding me. Have you not heard of ASUS before.!? Is there whole marketing strategy unfamiliar to you. I mean sure No one's going to sit here and say ASUS doesn't want as big market share as all possible. So if they can get the masses on board. Fine. But if you've been a paying attention. Asus specializes in quality. Not quantity. And if that quality hits enough of the market. Then they're guaranteed to make money either way. However.! Asus is primary demographic. Is the high end niche demographic.! Sure they go a little gamerfy. But they always have the finest engineering.!! And when I say hi-end. Does that mean high performance or high efficiency. Well technically there's no reason one can't be both. But the reality is most of the time they are one of the other. That being the case. Which one does ASUS most often specializing. "Performance" obviously.!!! It doesn't matter if it gets 100 ft to the gallon. As long as it's the most balls to the wall. Pants on fire handheld. That's the only way Asus was ever going to allow it into the world. Because like he said. They're not Steam. Durability to continue making money off of the product is limited after it's sold. So what is their strategy. To get everyone to buy their stuff. Duh. Make it the best.! In one way or another.! They don't claim it's all around the best. But they say these specific things are the best. And all of those things. Are important. In any computing device. Handheld or otherwise.! So the fact that he's acting surprised at its inefficiency. Is a little mind-boggling to me. Which prompts me to again ask the question. Has anyone here heard of Asus before. And is this business model a surprise to anyone who has heard of them.!?!

@@jennyrosedeleon2557 actually what we need is a type of whole room chi charging. That doesn't microwave you.! Also if you were actually using this as a portable version. Instead of something you just can easily use anywhere around the house. Then you would very probably also have an external pretty hefty battery pack. Like people who always use laptops. The difference is. Pulling this out of your bag or pocket. And starting to play. Out and about in public. Is much easier. And logistically functional to do then a laptop. It's not like a laptop you have to pull out and set up. You just pull it out the bag. And start playing.

One of my absolute favorite features in the steam Deck is the capacitive touch on the joysticks to enable gyroscopic aim. I find most aim related games almost unplayable without it. I don't know how I would have played Half-Life 2 without that. Basically any handheld that doesn't have that feature is borderline useless to me because I won't actually be able to play anything.

I said the same things when I saw the videos about this device. The battery is going to last about the the time it takes to turn it on to when you rush to find an outlet to plug it in. That’s not mobile gaming if your still tethered to the wall. I mostly use my steam deck plugged in but I know what to do to get a good 4-5 hours out of it unplugged. This device will have to make all the same concessions the steam deck does when all is said and done if you want to play mobile, and if you want to play plugged in you should stick with the laptop or desktop for the bigger screen. The best case use for this is people that travel a lot for work and such, that’s why I got the steamdeck. I spend several nights in a row in different hotels most weeks and the steam deck is the perfect size for taking my steam library on the road.

I've had my steamdeck for a year now and power usage is 100% the biggest issue with newer games. I played spiderman remastered at mostly 40fps and got about 90 mins of battery if I'm lucky. I like using the touch pads for emulator menus so not having them is a nogo. Trying to push 120hz with a tiny battery and multiple fans and a bright screen is def going to kill portability. I'm happy with my steamdeck and after a year of owning it I still love it. I hope the rog does well even tho it doesn't fit my use. The next steam deck is gonna be dope

Hey Phawx, excellent video, and when I started, I didn't plan to stay until the end, but it was so informative from start to finish, I just couldn't leave. And I completely agree on how this was approached by ASUS as look at all the videos posted in the last few days stating "Steam Deck" killer. Look at how many have ran with that, and outside of cost, questioned very little of the overall hardware. As stated, competition is always great for consumers, but I'm a long ways away from jumping on the Ally bandwagon thus far, but who knows what the future may bring?

A dozen units have been making their way around, at roughly 3 different variant models.

I think his point is moreso that this product doesn't make sense, and it's going to go the same route as the steam deck competitors, and just continue to do this spec war "also ran" thing where they talk about how much better they are than the deck, but being functionally less practical, useful, and meaningful to own, because they just ignore all the important compromises Valve made to make the SD more reliable, afforable, somewhat (but not great) efficient on battery, better to play games with (this thing doesn't have track pads)
@JohnnyinCLE
@JohnnyinCLE Жыл бұрын
@@ragingtyga I appreciate the response. Perhaps there is some confusion toward whom this device is marketed towards, and I can also understand frustration from the conjecture implied with the lack of information with this device. For instance, the conjecture of whether the SD/TF system would be optimized, along with other facets, like screen resolution vs display efficiency, battery life, etc. That said? I will say that I do think that some of this is much ado about nothing, and that at the end of the day, folks will either love or care less about the device. What I can say however, is that the ROG Ally *will* be able to be previewed at stores internationally, and not just Best Buy in Canada/US. I'd suggest giving the final version a test drive, and be the judge from there,
@ragingtyga

@@JohnnyinCLE I don't think there's confusion, I just think that the he's making a point that this device isn't going to run the way ASUS claims and he backs that up with data. As far as who it's marketed for, we know who. The question is, is it actually going to satisfy the people is aiming at, or just end up like the dozens of handhelds that people look at, and say "This is probably better than a steam deck, but it's more expensive and gives me less battery....I'll just get a steam deck"
@billybobthorton2026
@billybobthorton2026 Жыл бұрын
@@ragingtyga I am just not really sure what you steam deck owners want. Should everyone just throw their hands up and say, "It's not viable to make a competitor to the steamdeck, until 2025 because APUs just aren't there yet." ? Every steam deck owner bawks at every increased spec. Obviously battery life is a concern. I am under no illusions about that. But at some point we have to move away from an APU made in 2019 and 60hz screen.
@JohnnyinCLE
@JohnnyinCLE Жыл бұрын
@@ragingtyga Respectfully, I disagree. For one thing, the casual Steamdeck user may not realize that ROG Ally is meant to be an extension of the XG System. By this? XG System is one where it started with the Flow, but is meant to eventually span across more of the ROG family of devices. For now, that means the Flow X, Z and Ally devices, but will expand further in the near future. This is why some of the design choices were made. It can be argued that the Ally will, in some ways, be "The Switch on Steroids", as it soft docks into XG system, and can also be bridged with Arion for further expansion of abilities. As for the sales strategy? Best Buy was strategically chosen, as it's presently the strongest of the initial physical stores in North America that would retain the ROG brand, in general. With time, this would likely expand, to various stores of certain pedigree (e.g; Micro Center).

I have a solution to this plug it in I already on a lot of Asus products including the Z 13 flow along with the mobile GPU that is supposed to be compatible with this device and what most likely will happen is with other Asus devices when it’s not plugged in it probably won’t allow you to go into what they call turbo mode. I have the Z 13 and will probably be getting this because I travel a lot and the only places where I don’t have somewhere to actually plug-in is maybe on like a bus or subway system (but I have some pretty cool, hundred watt output, small power stations that I could still plug into ) but for the most part when it comes to airplanes and other forms of travel. I always have somewhere to plug it in and when I don’t I doubt I’ll be playing more than 20 minutes anyways so I don’t see the problem here.
