What Could Red Dead 3 Be?

A friend of mine made a really good observation -Rdr1 was the death of what was left of the Van'der Lin gang ,Rdr2 was the downfall of the gang and Dutchs spiral into insanity -Rdr3 should be the creation and rise of the gang. Another prequel set farther back, covering Colm Killing Annabelle. Dutch Killing his brother. How John and Arthur joined. See Hosea in his prime, even meet previous members we never knew of.

An origin story would’ve worked great as a multi-chapter DLC for RDR2, but it shouldn’t be its own game. It just wouldn’t work.

Another important thing to consider is the fact that both Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 both had the main story spanning most of the duration of the game, plus an epilogue, and then free roam after that, which couldn't work for a possible third game, assuming a similar structure. The narrative would end right before the events of R.D.R.2, meaning the epilogue and freeroam parts of the game would have to instead happen seperately, yet simultaneously to R.D.R.2 in order to have the story not repeat itself. The only way to achieve this would be an epilogue of Charles after he moves to Canada. But that would require a second epilogue-exclusive map to be made just for this purpose, which I doubt Rockstar would be prepared to do. Or alternatively, the game could just end when the player character dies-which seems to be a given with these games-but that limits the possibilities as to who that protagonist can be, so there is a legitimate challenge to be had here.

Mac seems to have been set up as the protagonist of rdr3 -Jack (protagonist) is saved by John (‘predecessor’ protagonist) -John is saved by Arthur -Arthur is saved by Mac (in blackwater Arthur’s horse dies so Mac gives him his horse) also Mac is mentioned as a beloved and important gang member but we never see him or a picture of him, he also had a brother (Davey) who would be like John to Arthur. Mac was set up to be like Arthur, so it would make sense although some people say that this would make him and his relationship to other characters too similar to Arthur

I agree. I think it shouldn't be called Red Dead Redemption though. It should be called something like "Red Dead Revelation" Since it would most likely end at the Blackwater Massacre or somewhere around there and be about the decline of Dutch Van Der Linde, it would be the final conclusion to the series, and it would ultimately be a Revelation; it would be the start of the end for himself and the gang that he created.

Imagine, they would have to make a game where it takes 24 years for the story to finish. whole RDR2 story happens in a month or two and it takes a month to 100% it. Even if they made it, we wouldnt see like 99.9% of the story.

This story should be included in the story of RD3 but not in the gang's perspective, but someone who does interact with the gang to see this story unfolding. But it's its own independent narrative that includes this story.

I suppose a young Dutch would be neat. You'd have to play the games in reverse, but in the 3rd game you'd be watching him up until the point of the ferry job. Then play the 2nd, watching his descent. Then finally, the 1st, where you hunt him down. It would be neat, but having the story go in reverse is already weird for 2 games, let alone 3. I know people hate on Sadie for no apparent legitimate reason, but I'd like to play as her. Though, it'd be better as a short story for a DLC, which we know Rockstar doesn't care enough to do anymore.

Imagine, they would have to create a game where the story spans 24 years and stretches out throughout the entire Continental United States. The entire RDR2 story takes place over a month or two, and it takes about a month to 100% complete the game (all strangers, random encounters, compendium etc). Even if they made it, we wouldn't see about 99.9% of the story. I'd love to see Hosea in his gunslinging prime before he met Dutch, maybe some conflict between him and Landon Ricketts. He could have two other friends, but their relationship is loose, and they don't really like each other, but need each other to survive. Rather than playing as Hosea, we should play as one of those two guys. The game could end with an epic duel like in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, where all three of them turn on each other. No matter what the player does, Hosea outdraws both of them and kills them. Then there would be an epilogue where Hosea meets Dutch.

I understand that people have a real affinity for Dutch, Hosea and The Van der Linde Gang but for me, playing another game where so many of the main character's fates are already known wouldn't be as engaging as playing as a lesser known or entirely new character. A game that covers the entire rise and fall of Dutch would also be extremely difficult, an open world game that spans any number of years with a single time jump is feasible but an open world game that covers 35 years with multiple time jumps would be very tricky and the I think the detail and overall quality of the open world would suffer as a result. In order for the open world to keep up with the story the environment, buildings, side characters etc would have to change and evolve multiple times which sounds cool but the quality of the open world at any set time frame during the story would only be a fraction of quality we'd see if the game was mainly set at a single point in time. I personally wouldn't mind if the next RDR focused on an entirely new character just as long as the story takes place back in the height of the Wild West, I'm not opposed to there being mentions of The Van der Linde Gang or even interactions with them but I just dont care to focus on them for another game. If the next game was to focus on a character we already know I'd want it to be Landon Ricketts, obviously he'd have to be recast which would be tricky as Ross Hagen's performance was so iconic but his character has such a rich backstory which would definitely benefit from some detail.

I think red dead 3 should go way back in time like 1850s. We get a center location in south us, almost like blood meridian. It should be story accurate with history about outlaws trying to get fast money with scalpin, robbing banks, heists and encounter with various people. You should be able to explore Mexico. There should be multiple new characters with all each off their own story. A bonus would be Judge holden as a side character or a boss off some sort.

The best and most logical choice for me would be another Red Dead "whatever" set in the prime of the wild west, new characters, new map, maybe set after the civil war, late 60s early 70s or even 80s, letting Dutch and the gang rest because EVERYTHING about them is told, how Dutch and Hosea met, how almost every gang member entered in the gang, a few of their most important jobs during those years... I mean, there is no plot as big to make a whole new game about it, like i said, everything important about the gangs story is told, in camp conversations, in missions while on horseback, in letters and such in the camp... Imagine a game where you are a civil war veteran and become a bounty hunter, or a native american fighting for his land against the U.S army, or maybe playing as those two characters at the same time (although i prefer just one main character), big deserts, maybe more of new-mexico, i don't know, there is too much potential.. Let's put the Van Der Linde Gang to rest.

Rockstar please make my dream a reality. The story of Red Dead 3 being a prequel to Red Dead 2 set in 1869-1899 about the origins of the Van der Linde gang formation and Dutch's life story before the gang. His early young days, meeting everybody in the gang and getting them to join his cause against the system of power, his love connection with Annabelle, deeper exploration of his association turned rivalry with Colm O'Driscoll. Missions ought to contain robberies of banks and trains, holding people ransom, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, the killings of Colm's brother and Annabelle and the failed boat robbery in Blackwater during 1899. The game should have 3 playable characters with prologue part 1 & 2, 2 chapters, epilogue part 1 & 2. Title might need to be changed from "Redemption" to "Revolution" in order to fit the story better. Dutch as the character of the prologue - beginning Mac & Davey Callender as the characters of the chapters and epilogue - middle & end Red Dead Revolution (gang origin formation) 1869-1899 Red Dead Redemption 2 (gang deterioration and disbandment) 1899-1907 Red Dead Redemption (gang members hunted and taken down) 1911-1914 Therefore the entire Van der Linde gang story is shown visually. This has been the right move from the start.

The theme of the "end of the wild west" has been explored by both RDR1 and RDR2. Pushing it deeper into the 20th century is a huge stretch to just reiterate on ideas that were already explored. Another prequel makes more sense than going deeper into the modern age.

I think that Red Dead Redemption 3 should be able Lyle Morgan (Arthur’s Dad). It would also be cool if in the epilogue you are Arthur in the early stages of the gang like you were taking about. One of the main problems I really see if it being about Dutch is that we know so much about him already. And Jack would also be a problem because then it would be in the WW1 time, which wouldn’t make it a gunslinger type game. The thing is that there are so many options for Red Dead Redemption 3 that there is really no way to know what it will be. So time will tell I guess. (Great video by the way 👍)

That's a cool idea. But honestly, I'm kinda done with the Vanderlinde gang. We've seen enough of them. We don't need another story revolving around the same gang. Like it's the Wild West, and ironically both games don't even take place in the actual 'Wild West' era. 1 was in a whole other century, 2 was on the last leg of the era. Let's turn back the clock, to between 1865 or 1895 where things were actually WILD. See something fresh, a character in a very dark time actually fighting for redemption. Fighting to keep true, when the times made way for mayhem and monsters.

Dutch is not a monster. He was betrayed by John (the rat) and didn't know how to deal with it. The world around him changed and he couldn't lead his gang to the promised land because John ratted them out. He was torn between Micah (who was telling him the harsh truth) and John and Arthur who he treated as his sons but who turned against him.
