I suffer with both depression and anxiety and I don't know how people like you can open up about your experience. I find it difficult to talk to anyone and try to bottle it up myself least I know I'm not alone and find it amazing how many people with similar problems play the souls games. Keep at it

It is hard. This was the most challenging video I've made so far and I debated as to whether or not to do it for a while, but I figured that it might be helpful. I love how the Souls games has allowed people to feel safe opening up. It's hard to do, but important and good to know that you're not all alone and that your feelings are valid. Thank you for having that courage yourself!

I agree, as someone who played all the Souls series, except for Demon Souls, don't have a PS3 :'(, that these games taught me perseverance, never give up, not getting greedy (in turns of of getting hits in), and the fact that the main character is just an average Joe trying to survive in those disgustingly ugly, yet beautiful world. (Just like reality) What I feel when I go out and venture through my journey in Dark Souls/Bloodborne, I always get this feeling of home and embrace whenever I come across a bonfire, and especially in the Firelink Shrine/Hunter's Dream. I get those feelings of homesickness, in a game, because the outside world is the unknown, dark, and harsh world of no remorse. The imagery and setting of Dark Souls 3's Firelink Shrine shows a safe heaven for vagabonds. The overall place is pretty dark, but the juxtaposition of the candle placement, bonfire, and sunlight creates a place of light in the depth of Dark Souls' reality. By the way you should check out the Code Vein game that's coming out soon. From the trailer, I highly doubt it can surpass the Souls' series, but it's worth to take a look. This is off topic, but have you played Nier:Automata because you will like it.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I completely agree with you in that the world in the Soulsborne games is a metaphor for ours. It can be dark, remorseless, but at the same time breathtaking. It reminds you that there are many factors in the environment that you can't control, but you can control the way you get through the obstacles. I might pick up Code Vein. I'm on the fence now, but I'm watching all of the new clips that come in to see if I might like it. I'm glad you mentioned Nier: Automata too, I'm playing it right now! I just started Route C. I love how the narrative is so much more than what it looks like on the surface.

Truly great art leaves you thinking about it for hours, days, and weeks on end. Bloodborne is one of those masterpieces that, if delved into, can supply a nearly endless amount of inspiration and thought. The more you learn about it, the more interesting it gets, and the more connections you can make to real life ideas. I love that you shared this experience! Also you're really cool for talking so honestly like this, especially about an inner journey of sorts. Just very relatable so thank you!

These games have changed my life since I started playing dark souls and bloodborne June past. I've been off work due to 2 bad car accidents and was smotherimg in my own depression. Once I started these games I started controlling my feelings, putting the energy into the games and the rewardimg feeling I would get after finally beating a boss I've been stuck on a few days, or walking in and destroying them first try feels even better. They gave me something , anything to feel good about . The constant death and trial and error of these games are the biggest metaphors for life and the shit it throws at you, and these games really changed the way I tackle everything now . for me its dark souls - blood borne - ds3 - ds2 are my favorotes in that order! Also, you have such a easy voice to listen too 👌👌

An amazing message! I've played Bloodborne and heard an interpretation of the videogame similar to yours, never give up no matter what. Life obstacles get harder and harder just like soulsborne foes do, however you get better (or git gud haha), that's how life is. And no matter how dark, stressful or frustrating some moments may be, you eventually get through if you keep at it and don't give up. If you are going through a dark moment in life, remember, this too shall pass. And you will feel great when you overcome life challenges just like in the game 😉. After playing this game, or the "game" of life, you will come to realize what differentiates winners from losers is if they give up or not. And remember, you are never alone, just like a hunter is never alone ;)
@Michela

Yes, I agree with all of this! That's why even these dark games are the most uplifting. They're a metaphor and reminder that you can get through life's challenges even if they look impossible at first. It gives you an accomplished feeling when you do.

Another thing with Bloodborne and dark souls is Dark souls teaches you to not be greedy. Love what you have because greed can lead to failure quickly. Also over aggression is not a good thing. Yes, dark souls is a quick moving game but with the rolling mechanic and perrying mechanic it allows you to sit back and observe your enemy before being aggressive and even then being aggressive should be used with caution. Bloodborne wants you to be aggressive. The way to thrive is by being aggressive, and greed is sometimes necessary. It takes away the dodging and perrying is there but nothing like Dark Souls. Blocking is also taken away(unless you want to use one of the two shields in the game that are practically useless). The biggest thing is when you get hit you have a chance to recover but you HAVE to make a move quickly and execute with precision.

It's great to see people get more out of games than just entertainment. What I got from Dark Souls was that the world is not black and white but gray, which goes into the whole good people with good intentions dont always come out doing good things. It hit hard with the NPCs of the first game and theyre questlines. Saving Syegmyer from his heroic suicidal attack in izalith causes him to go mad and hollow. Inspiring the Crestfallen warrior by ringing the bells causes him to finally do something and go hollow in new londo. Helping Big Hat Logan find the archives causes him to go mad. Telling the pyromancer at firelink shrine where the chaos sister was makes him go to the swamp die and go hollow. Helping Solaire on his journey slowly drives him to despair and worse if he finds the sunlight maget. Worse part is I whent into this trying to help them and only ended up ruining them. No matter how hard we try things wont always go our way, so it leaves us with the only progressive option left which is to keep moving forward (linking the fire or putting it out). One foot in front of the other, no looking back. I love your take on these games and hope to see more from you. I see that you're fan of Nier, have you ever tried playing the original Drakengard games. The first ones great its about a rag tag team consisting of a psycho, pedophile, cannibal,a sexually driven dragon and a foolish little boy on a journey to save the world from theyre psychotic gods.

I wish there were more videos about games and topics in general like this. It's so refreshing to hear someone open up about their serious intellectual exploration and impression of a game rather than seek the lowest common denominator. There's always a time and place for joking around but when something effects you on this level, it's great to acknowledge that. Make sure you have fun but don't ever stop being one of the more thoughtful gamers on YT & twitch. Your impressions make you unique and that is a fabulous and rare occurrence. Watching your videos and lore about these series makes me fall more in love with these games. I still need to play them myself one day as I haven't really had the chance but I do also love games that have these kind of narratives that use a lot of symbolism and metaphors that is all up to the player to piece it together. The designs, music, the characters, all having some layers of meaning and thoughtfulness. SoulsBourne strikes me as very poetic in that way despite its dark visuals. Hearing about your favourite anime, I saw once recommendations for it, only the boxart and name, and I thought I could put it into my watchlist without knowing anything about it cuz why not but after listening to you I may actually check it out. Also in that regard I was thinking if you had ever tried Shin Megami Tensei main franchise, since it also has this superficial plot but there's also layers of meaningfulness and symbolism to piece together, along with this environmental storytelling style just like Dark Souls. The only difference is how SMT is more speculative fiction for a genre, blending the occult and bizarre and philosophical with its sci fi and dark fantasy elements.

Your story really reminded me of what I was dealing with when bloodborne came out. I was battling severe depression and looking for things to take my mind off of the issues I was facing. I initially didn't like bloodborne although I very much liked the whole Victorian gothic vibe it had with the monsters mixed in. I played it for 4 hours the night I bought it and couldn't get past the group at the bonfire. Frustration set in and I shelved the game for several months. One night I was determined to at least get to the first boss, and decided that if I did that and still didn't like it, that at least I gave it a fair shot. Long story short I finally get to cleric beast and beat him on my first attempt. After that something changed. I just got how the game worked. I noticed that things were becoming easier to deal with and if I died, it was usually from me being careless. Fast forward and ive gotten all 3 endings on it and completed the dlc, and a game I initial didn't like is now one of my favorite games ever, and it did in fact make me feel like things I thought I couldn't do were now things I just needed to try harder on. Your video and views were spot on. Sorry for the long post but i really just related to what u were saying, and u got a new sub. Good luck with your channel as u deserve many more subscribers

I can relate so well to BB causing anxiety. I actually disliked playing BB not for any fault of the game. Quite the opposite, they designed the game so well that it always left me feeling uneasy and anxious, but i could not stop playing, thinking, or watching videos about BB ( here i am). Bloodborne might be the most horrified and psychologically unsettled ive ever been in a video game. 2 areas specifically that almost made me feel physically sick are - Nighmare frontier & Forbidden Woods. My mind was in a state of frenzy IRL.

Dark Souls seems to of helped a lot of people with their depression. Three that come to mind that do the youtube thing are NakeyJakey, Writing On Games, and ParagonDS. I think the reason why the Soulsborne games are so good at helping people through depression is because the games world is built on the foundation of how depressed people feel. I can't say all depressed people, so I should clarify I speak for myself in that regard. My dad died when I was 5, so I got started on depression early, as I'm 34 now. The world of Dark Souls is very ruinous and unforgiving. It's not going to give you anything you're not willing to go get yourself. For me personally the Dark Souls games made me feel like there were people out there that "got it", so to speak. Because here is this world where in every starting area there is always one dude who was called to action, but couldn't handle it and gave up and now they're crestfallen, sitting there lamenting about life and filling your head with the horrors in store for you. Like the voice in your head that tells you it's not worth it to keep trying. Lore wise the reason why the Hollows became Hollows in the first place was because they were undead who gave up or otherwise lost that one thing they were so desperately searching for and gave into despair. When you think of the Souls series in the context of an allegory for depression, the NPC's telling you "Don't you dare go hollow." are representative of the people close to you and that really quiet voice in your head that tells you not to give up.

To be honest, in the beginning of The Walking Dead the zombies are the main focus BUT the more you keep reading/watching/playing the more they tend to step away from them being the main threat and start introducing other survivors or communities as the main threat, some of those villains include, The Governor, Negan and the Saviors, and The Whisperers......the zombies are more of an obstacle to overcome and you have to be wary of the person standing next to you....that's the best way I can sum it up

We still don't know exactly what Shadows Die Twice will entail, so there's still hope! What I want most is a new IP, even though my heart wants a Bloodborne 2 at the same time. Since there's Kanji script and if it ends up being BB2, it's possible that they could be taking us eastward and telling the story of the scourge there. If it's a new IP, FromSoft will be able to make a brand new masterpiece, potentially!

Yeah there is potential that it could be Bloodborne set in the far east. Afterall in the DLC there was a man in a cell (Yamamura) who's armour you could take and in the description it says he comes from an eastern land. What makes this possible is that they already did something similar with the DS1 dlc with Marvellous Chester. He both looks and fights more like a hunter than a typical DS character. And what game came next? Bloodborne! DS2 doesn't count because that wasn't Miyazaki.

Have faith in fromsoftware mate. When it comes to a new ip they have always delivered masterpieces! Also, I strongly believe that it is nice that they are inplrmenting changes to the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I love the formula of the soulsborne more than anything, but we shouldn't forget that these guys are creators. And it makes me happy to see that they are free to try new things, and don't stuck to making the same stuff

They ruined my FPS ability, it’s terrible and awesome. But yeah I agree, the first rdr did that for me. Played it during a major life change. Reminded me what being a man is about, and got my own redemption.

Trust me, I feel like I'm the most annoyed at that. I tried out a fancy new mic and didn't realize how noisy it was until the entire video was recorded. I assure you I'm working on it, lol!
