@@annettekearney9798 I do know. Rory was starting to discuss a project with me in 2017, when we were ripped apart by Boris on the rise. I'm probably the original weirdo and misfit - we call ourselves Neurodivergents. I'd done quite a blinder shortly beforehand, roughly the equivalent work of one ministry-year in six hours live time, landing a significant diplomatic deal, and removing any doubt about the record in my security dossier. There aren't that many in the world able to deliver at that level, and I was actually under study by some top shrinks at the time, because of my claims to a decent share of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. You'll have heard of their thinking from Dominic Cummings a couple of weeks back, Boris discovered he was a numpty in charge of numpties, and they needed folk like me - but there was no way I'd volunteer, particularly on the slavery terms in the job description. In particular, in completing Gandhi's unfinished business, I'd laid the ground rules for Rory's work in the area. Rory's his own man, but this much I know: neither of us want to ever deal with Parliament again. Boris destroyed the heritage, and the quality people once produced by our education system were dumped by the diagnoses of ADHD and ASD popularised in the 1970s. Add in demand from rich foreigners, and rich parents of donkeys, and the competence of the First Division has become disastrous.

Cameron's most important mistake of all was hubris around Brexit, not campaigning effectively and simply not seeing that the Brexit referendum would be used by a significant number of people as just another opportunity for a mid-term "eff-you" vote. The mid-term protest factor wasn't picked up in the polls and was enough to tip the balance.

From across the pond, great podcast! Rory made a point about how Cameron has an advantage in that he doesn’t have a constituency and won’t be called in for a vote; thus, he will be able to travel for the Foreign Office. That brings a question to mind. Why, under the British parliamentary system, are all the cabinet officers members of Parliament? In the US, if a congressperson is chosen for the Cabinet, they give up their congressional seat. It would seem to me to be very difficult to juggle the requirements of being in Parliament and the requirements of being in the Cabinet.

Since yesterday, Israel has achieved one of its main goals in its war on the health system. The death count in the thousands was a factor that pressured her from international public opinion, and the pressure increased every day. With the collapse of the health system and communication lines, yesterday the health administration in Gaza stopped counting the death toll and updating the total victims. From today until the end of the war, and perhaps years after that, we will not know the number of dead. The victims will be buried en masse without restriction or registration, or their bodies will be left in the open and under rubble until they decompose. We wanted to say that the Palestinians are human beings, with names, lives, and faces, not numbers. Now the Palestinian has lost his right to be merely a number. Even this was imposed on the Palestinian by the world.

Suggested theme for a future podcast: To what extent is politics simply based on tribal loyalty rather than supposed ideology? This is explored in (for instance) a book called "The Myth of Left and Right: How the Political Spectrum Misleads and Harms America", which essentially argues that that ‘left’ and ‘right’ do not name coherent worldviews but coalitions that bundle a largely arbitrary set of issue positions that are highly variable and unstable across time and place.

If they have no influence on lowering inflation, then presumably the Tories had no influence on any increase in inflation. Good for them.

I would have a brooding, ruminating leader over a calm and cool one, any day. They may be harder to work with, but when the mood is a troubled one, which attitude is more likely to inspire creative, clever, but sensitive solutions? In other words, are we not ready for a more meritocratic system of government?

Hi love your podcast. I'm French Canadian so you know I don’t have a lot of love for the Brit on that I sympathize with the Palestinian. That is partly why I have to say I have an issue with how Israel handle the whole situation. Yes, they have a right to defend thyself but no right at committing mass punishment on the population. Except for geopolitics(the US keeping control of the water passage) reason, I fail to see how the two-state solution is a solution at all. Since one side population have so little right and freedom, the butchery of Oct 7 are doomed to happen again and again. I don’t events want to talk about Netanyahu because that man is just too much. He had hate speech again Rabin a d not unlike Trump whip fanatic in a frenzy that ends up in tragedy. He covers Hamas because it was a good way to divide and conquer. Just look how friendly he was with Putin. That is now that same ''friend'' is meeting with Hamas. He let down a fellow Jewish leader in Zelensky. That man, Netanyahu, as to go for peace to have a slimmer of chance to happen. That whole situation happens because he drains so much resource for illegal settling to appease the ultra-right side of his country and left a window for Hamas to do the butchery. Because before the 7th of Oct Hamas was not popular at all in Gaza 70 ish % dint want them or trust them. But with so many civilian deaths he probably did what Israel did for Hezbollah (don’t forget they swear they would destroy them either) and revive them and made them a regional power. That whole freaking situation is a mess and won’t be solved with the current actor.

You missed talking about the big economic and housing crisis that is going on in Portugal. Right now António Costa is not very loved like he was a few years ago. By the way, he won last elections by saying that everyone from the left should vote for him so we wouldn’t have a coalition between right and extreme right parties. And after getting a majority he ruled as he pleased thus the crisis we’re on right now. 😢 (love your show! Thank you!)

A superb listen. Would love to know how Mr Campbell feels about this evenings vote and refusal of many Labour MP’s to back their leader. As a fellow claret I would very like Alistair to join me pre game. So we can visit the pubs of Burnley and he might actually hear something other than his London centric bias. For foreign listeners, London ain’t England, they live in a different world, to the majority. It’s not populism which will cost labour it is their arrogance and ignorance towards northern views. Views which made them the force they used to be.
