It's so interesting to see how different countries do birth. We were told not to bring any diapers or wipes for our son because the hospital provided everything. When our nurse would come to check on us, she'd open a new pack of diapers and wipes and say, "well, they're open now, we can't use them so you might as well bright them home." We left with so many diapers and wipes but they were so needed!

I'm currently in hospital (not pregnancy related, just chronically ill), and just wanted to say thank you Hannah for the genius idea of bringing a fan! My hospital is always so stuffy so a fan is helping a whole lot. I've had a mini one sitting in my study for years and it never occurred to me to bring it in until I watched this. 💛

I packed SO much stuff in my hospital bag with my first baby and hardly used any of it! I ended up spending the whole time in the hospital gown and baby was mainly just in their nappies to have more skin on skin time. I think the most important thing was my water bottle, followed by snacks (for the postnatal time).

Hi Hanna! The baby hat we use it when baby is just born because they loose heat from their head. So it’s to keep them warm after delivery. Cause Rowan went to NICU for some breathing support, probably had a CPAP hat from the unit :) …I’m a NICU sister

In the US, the hospital supplies the pads, underwear, diapers, wipes, baby shirts and hats etc. Of course they also supply you with a $5000 bill 😂 I think I'd prefer the UK way.

Your stoma bag covers are so cute! I also think it's so unbelievably cool that Rowan has hand-crafted items from two of his great-grandmothers! I'm doubly impressed that they finished all of these projects before he was born; I can't tell you how many baby blankets I've started for babies who will be at LEAST ten years old before they're ever finished 😂

Oh man in the US hospitals are always FREEZING. Some areas aren't so bad but most are really quite cold. They often offer heated blankets (not like a plug in kind but just thin cotton ones kept in a heater until needed) because of this.

My nan has knitted a basket of baby clothes for me and my 2 sisters! So we each have a basket of baby clothes for when we have a baby (if we do) 🥰 My oldest sister has already used her basket because I have a 15 month old nephew! But I think it’s a very sweet gesture ❤️

I used almost everything in my hospital bag if I recall correctly (it was 11 months ago now!) but I think I asked my husband to get a few more bits from home for some reason. Maybe because he kept eating my snacks in labour then I ended up seriously understocked for post partum munchies 😂

Glad you used a lot of what you packed! I ended up using pretty much nothing in my hospital bag. I lived in the hospital gowns and baby was mostly just swaddled. And the hospital provided a lot for us. Maybe there is more provided in the US (because it costs so freaking much, they better give us free stuff!), but we didn't have to use our own diapers, baby blankets, maternity pads/underwear. My husband was very displeased with his bed situation, though, as he was able to stay overnight. Wish we had packed a proper pillow for him!

This was so similar to me- I really wish I’d packed more nappies/baby clothes. I think this is reflective of what happens for first time mums… focusing sooo much on labour & birth and it’s hard to imagine there actually is going to be a baby at the end of the process!!

We also TOTALLY overpacked on entertainment stuff 😂 We also brought a Switch, books, iPad... My labor at the hospital was only 4h though. And I guess we were very naive thinking we'd need entertainment once the baby was born 😅 The only thing we got "extra" were mittens and a hat. (My mom and sister brought it.) We got a hat from the hospital but it kept sliding off. Nappies and such were all provided by the hospital. I'm so glad my husband could sleep with us in the hospital... Although he would probably have gotten more sleep at home 😅

It's interesting that you said that hospitals in the UK are really warm, because here in South Africa, (private) hospitals are always really cold because they have the aircon pumping 24/7. (State hospitals here don't have aircon, hence why I made the distinction).

When we had our child we didn’t know what sex she was going into labour so my mom’s job was to get her going home outfit. She bought her the cutest little pink fuzzy sleeper. My daughter will be 27 next week and I have that sleeper kept in safe keeping with a couple of other special mementos.

Yup, underpacking for baby and overpacking for labour - that was me too. We stayed 3.5 days in hospital with a vomity baby. No problem though as more clothes and nappies can easily be picked up.

I didn’t use a single thing from my labour bag lol, I had battery operated candles, speakers, a diffuser, a nightgown, some books. All unused hahaha. In Canada they have blankets and diapers for your baby in hospital, as well as postpartum pads and a peri bottle etc which was handy, I didn’t use any of my own stuff until I was home (but I only stayed one night in hospital). Just needed going home clothes for baby & myself and phone chargers, flip flops would have been great but I didn’t pack any.

I was very glad to have overpacked as I stayed in for almost a week after too and needed lots of the stuff my wash bag allowed me to feel almost human everyday and allowed me some time to feel nice again. I also packed lavender oil for in labour and honestly I loved dabbing it on after too for some zen, I often got compliments 🤣

We had basically the opposite experience, went into labor almost a month early, had not packed, baby was out in about 18 hours from when we got to hospital and we went home the next day. However, we live an hour from the hospital and my partner couldn't leave, so we had my sister in law running around to buy diapers, wipes, etc from the store. We also had a frigid hospital, needed more blankets.

My hospital supplied all towels, diapers, pacifiers, and pretty much anything except extra clothes for the baby. Even sweet little baby tshirts, hats and blankets. The nurses preferred the t-shirts the hospital provided, because it made caring for them so much easier. I carried a going home outfit, baby booties and little mittens to keep them from scratching their faces. The hospital required that I wear one of their gowns, and those no slip socks, but I carried extras for afterward. They also supplied soap, shampoo and conditioner, and all after birth necessities for mom, but not other personal care items. It cost a small fortune, (most was covered by insurance) especially for my first child who was premature, but I had rather pay the extras than have to pack all of those things. Of course, there is no amount I wouldn't have paid for the expert care of my children and myself.

I’m in the US, so things are obviously quite different here, but the one thing I wish we had packed more of is snacks. My husband ate through most of our snacks while I was in Labor and then postpartum we weren’t allowed to leave our room because of covid restrictions. So every little thing we wanted to eat we had to order from the kitchen and it closed at 8pm. So definitely packing more snacks for the midnight breast feeding munchies next time.

I've had 3 babies all naturally in a birth centre attatched to a hospital. The only birth I never brought too much stuff to was my 3rd baby when I brought next to nothing.. that was all I needed.

Haha yep I defs over packed on the this to use during labour. Didn't eat any snacks, or really use any of the entertainment stuff (I somehow thought I would Read a book?!) or other relaxation stuff. Didn't need most of the newborn stuff either. I think the only thing I wish had more of is that only packed 1 adult diaper. Was super handy and wish had packed more cause I leaked a few times off the hospital pads, and then once I got home I didn't need them at all so now just have a pack of adult diapers for no reason.

This is so funny, similar experience with opposite regrets. I didn't bring nearly enough for myself, really needed more nighties and things. I also had a long labour 6/7 days from water breaking to birth and lots of trips back and forth. I just wanted more clothes the whole time. Then we packed like 7 onesies and a whole pack of nappies for a baby who spent less than 24 hours in the hospital before we went home. Our hospital didn't supply as much baby stuff as I expected but did have like a labour ball and baby blankets for bubs. Went through an unholy quantity of bed pads, they restocked the labour room twice. Next time around I've got exactly the same number of baby clothes (because who knows how long we will be in for), much more for myself including slippers and dry shampoo, and I will be better at my snack packing now I know they feed you meals on the wards. We will also be paying the extra for a private post-partum ward room for the extra comfort.

For the most part, yea I think we packed okay. Definitely needed more baby clothes as she spit up often or had blow outs, but with my C-section baby time I was in the hospital for 5 days and was pretty sick so it’s a blur. I was in a bra a lot with the gown and the hospital socks.

I was Induced a week early but it was planned in that I had a day to go in and knew when it would happen. Since the midwives and doctors and everyone else said induction takes a while I packed entertainment bits (ipad, Nintendo ds, music). I didn't use a single thing 🤣 it happened way quicker than anticipated and even before my contractions really kicked off my mind just wouldn't settle.

The hat is mostly because the head is the largest surface where the baby can disperse heat, they are not really good at thermoregulation yet, so if you feel they are a bit cold try and put the hat on♡

Neither my nor my baby wore any clothes I brought until we went home. I was also in the hospital for 4 days (also unexpected C-section) and just wore the hospital gowns the whole time. And we kept her wrapped in a blanket so we didn't feel the need to dress her.

I would HIGHLY recommend couples who are giving birth for the first time to bring pillows and comfy blankets for your birthing partner. Hospital blankets and pillows suck and you (the person giving birth) are the only one with the comfy bed. The comfy pillows and blankets were the only thing that allowed my partner to have a decent night's sleep

I'm so suprised Dan was not able to stay with you over night. I gave birth end of last October in the UK and the only time my partner (also a Dan) had to leave was between 9 and 11am. But my little man was with me the whole time so that might be the difference.

My biggest mistake was packing my labor and my post-partum stuff in one bag; my husband had to haul that thing all around the hospital. We’d brought a birthing ball that he spent ages blowing up only for me to sit on it for two seconds and decide heck no!

I birthed at home, but had to be taken to the hospital with an ambulance due to rupture so I could get stitched up there. I totally didn't bring shoes, so I left the hospital on my slippers :D Other than that, we don't need to bring any nappies or blankets for the baby, they have that in the hospitals here.

So just as someone not from UK.You mentioned here and in the 4th trimester one someting about having to watch the baby all the time, using the time Dan was there to shower, having one nurse offering to look after Rowan while you picked up thing from Dan when he wasn't allowed to come in. I was wondering if this means that there is no support from the medical staff with the baby after labor? I'm wondering because I'm in my 3rd trimester and where I'm from there is a staffroom they could take the baby to, if you either want to shower or even if you want to get a couple hours sleep and the widwifes will take care of the baby for that time.

This is the second time I'm hearing that hospitals in the UK are hot! In Canada they are freezing to combat bacteria growth and keep people comfortable because you can always get someone warm and it's harder to cool people down. Why on earth would they keep a hospital warm? :/

I think they do it to keep old people comfy but you're absolutely right I think its stupid. My mum works in the hospital and has even had radiators be on (in a way that they can't be turned off) in the middle of summer when it's like 28°+ outside

I used almost everything but the book I brought 😅 but hospitals in Germany provide you with diapers and clothes for your stay. My husband had to bring me a sleeping bag for the baby bc that wasn't provided and it felt safer than wrapping them in the towels they gave us.

I asked my midwife about why we pack a hat for babies and it's because their head is wet when they're born and feels cold. When they're dry the hat can be taken off and no longer needed until you go home or outside into the fresh air.

Do hospitals in the UK not have air conditioning? I’m American and I have almost never been in a medical environment that was warm at all. I feel like it’s important for peoples comfort and germ spread to keep things cool!

I think its normally labour and delivery/ baby wards that are kept warmer on purpose as babies can’t regulate their temp as much. From my experience other departments are kept cooler!

A lot of hospitals (and schools and public buildings and peoples houses) don’t have air conditioning in UK as air conditioning wasn’t need that often in the past. All our buildings are built to keep heat in and to be as warm as possible. Also people aren’t used to air con so will go around opening windows when the air con is on, making it less effective. But as climate change gets worse it is getting hotter and the lack of air con is becoming a real problem, not just in the UK but in other parts of Europe as well.

i can't believe that you have to bring nappies! they are relatively cheap (from an insurance point of view) and all the kids at the postnatal ward have the same size. why don't they just have them there? or at the very least offer to purchase them on the spot.

The nhs used to provide everything, but to save money they no longer provide stuff that you would be using if you were not in hospital. Nappies, formula, wipes, bottles. In an emergency there are usually donations from the “friends group” of the hospital.

the nhs used to be free at the point of use, but in the last few years they have stopped providing anything that you could theoretically buy yourself, even though it would be much more cost effective for the NHS to buy in bulk. My mum injured her wrist and was examined by a nurse, who said she needed a sling, and told her to buy her own from a pharmacy and there would be instructions on the back of the box for my dad to know how to tie it.

I hardly remember because it's been almost five years but I think I vastly over packed my hospital bag. We had so much unused stuff to bring home at the end. I wish I'd underpacked and just asked our families to bring anything extra we needed because they were coming by to visit each day anyway.

Perhaps it depends on the quality of the ward you're on? I knew I could leave my room to freshen up and even if baby woke up and I couldn't hear, a midwife would be around to soothe. Didn't have to think about meals and had help with some nappies and bed sheets if he threw up etc so it was easier than being at home!

Ah, the hospital bag with a long labour and csection. I remember it well. I remember unpacking it literal weeks later going "why the fuck?" I went back into hospital and my darling husband got the pleasure of packing my hospital bag for a 2 night stay, while also caring for our 10 day old by himself. He did brilliantly but I definitely had the easier time almost dying, insanity!

Try B Free. They do bamboo nursing bras and I wore them throughout pregnancy. They're getting a bit small now but the bamboo is soft enough to sleep in which is handy.

I was very confused by your comment about hospitals always being too warm, so you weren’t sure why they wanted you to bring a hat for the baby except possibly for going home. Is it common for hospitals there to be overly warm inside? I am a Healthcare worker in the US, and have worked in/trained in several hospitals over the past 12 years and they are ALWAYS FREEZING. Is this just something in the US, and hospitals in other countries are always too warm inside? I have genuinely never heard this before. 🤯

No, they don't. To be fair I'd assume they charge you for all the unlimited supplies they give you? Or at the very least they overcharge you so much for birth that they kinda owe you some freebies

@@sophiehobley828 on my bill, the diapers and whatnot weren’t specifically itemized but I was told they were included in the baby’s “room and board.” So, basically, my hospital charges one specific amount for room and board no matter how many or few diapers or other supplies you used. So I took a ton because I wanted to get my moneys worth😂
