What did I Ruin?!? Dad's 1966 Buick Skylark Gets Baer Disc Brake Upgrades!

During the first drive of the season in my father's 1966 Buick Skylark I heard a strange noise coming from the right front wheel, which left us stranded and needing a tow home. After inspecting the damage it was time to give the car some upgrades with Baer disc brakes up front (SKU 4301432) and new shocks all the way around. No, this one is NOT FOR SALE! be careful pulling with chains mate. a lot of people die in exactly that situation, putting a feed bag close to the hook might save your life, it slows down the speed of the fast moving object, you learn that pretty fast when you go 4x4 on beaches here in Australia

The way i usually get those races off is take a wizzer wheel and cut almost all the way thru it, then take a air hammer or chisel and smack it and crack it. Slides right off with no damage to the spindle

To clean the headliner: Get a bucket of fairly soapy water. Make a lot of suds. Put just the suds on a scrub brush and scrub a spot then quickly vacuum it up with the shop vac. It allows you to pick up the dirt without making water spots.

I was hollerin at ya about the rotors!!! And pastrami to let the trailer down and get the bobcat out with the bucket,then fetch the trailer with the handler...course its hard to tell sides on camera anyways. The only helper i ever had in 10 years of mobile repair was my daughter who started at 10 yrs old was smarter and more talented then guys with 20 yrs experience....she even pointed out stuff i missed lol....UNBELIEVABLE!!

You may want to invest in a good jerk strap for all that recovery goodness, way easier on you and equipment. I was waiting for the old exploder to leave some frame rail on the ground. The old Buick just keeps getting better, I think your pop leaves it at your place for all the great things you keep doing to it, nice work.

When my father was alive He had 4 airplanes one of the airplanes didn't have brakes, people told him that he needs brakes! my dad told them you don't need brakes in the air, lol. My Dad's Dad father my grandfather flew with him in a Super Cub from Idaho to Alaska how many people have the balls to do that! The purpose of the residual valve in drum brakes only is to maintain enough pressure in the system to prevent water,air, or any other contaminants from entering the system. It will never hold enough pressure to overcome the springs. If it did, you would have dragging brakes. The adjusters have the job of determining how close the shoes are to the drum. That split master cylinder was a great idea. One of the few laws for cars I can get behind. Discs are better. No question, but unless you are racing, you don't need them. I am still running manual drums on my 66 and it has better brakes than my 99 that has power 4 wheel discs. Proper adjustment and maintenance is all you need.

Hello Mortske, I remember the same thing happened to my 72' Swinger. I actually froze it and shattered it off of the spindle, it was very quick and the cleanup well I had to sand down the area a little bit. It wasn't bad enough to replace it that's for sure. I didn't have torches all I had was a little map gas torch well it was easier to freeze it considering I was out in -27 already. Putting discs on the front of that is really going to make any Improvement that's for sure. I know your dad will be happy! Keep up the good work and many blessings as always

I found this segment entertaining and a trip down memory lane. I had a 61 mercury comet I was always working on that thing Even though a L6 I was doing hop ups. Wrinkle paint dash and interior trim Chrome goodies. Moon gauges. But that thing would constantly break down Fall apart Just not wanna run. The kicker for me and the way this relates to your Dads Buick was the front wheel bearing having frozen to the spindle. Mine did the same thing Only it seized so bad it actually broke the spindle SO there I was doing fifty thru an intersection with my left front wheel and rim and brake drum rolling along side me Not a good feeling I was so mad I left the keys in the ignition and a note on the windshield........ ITS YOURS keep up the good work though I dont know how you can keep up

I might have done both new spindles while I was there, but that's just me. When I upgraded my 67 Chevelle's 4-wheel manual drums to front disc brakes, I did both spindles because they came with the kit, and also stepped up to power brakes. Night and day difference! When in doubt, Double down on your rubbers!!!! 🤣😂🤣 Small tip Mortske Broth when you was pullin out the skid steer... You did good lining it up... Just keep it backed up a good ways on firmer ground and use the boom extended like you did with the forks.. Hold the brakes & suck the boom in.. It has more then enough pulling power to pullout the skidsteer

0this is a very nice and quality build/upgrade. I wonder why it would be hard to upgrade the front sway bar? Or if the Buick came with one? The selection of the front and rear shock absorbers is very critical to the ride and handling of any vehicle. The man who doe Junkyard Digs has shown how important this shock absorber upgrade is. The front seat looks to be in need of a upgrade to year appropriate, make appropriate bucket seats as well. Seats make a huge difference as well it the comfort and enjoyment of the driver as well as the passenger's. The upgrade for seats is a good investment in the long run. I enjoy your show and Duff , your dog.

Wow! What a cornucopia of action! First, the spindle replacement and new master cylinder installation. Next, a recovery mission. Then, picking up scrap. While we're all catching our breath, another recovery mission! Then the aborted test drive and the real test drive. The only thing we missed was you cutting grass. That's a lot of entertainment, well worth the price of admission (watching the ads). Thank you for showing it all. Say hello to Duffster for me!

Time now to kick back after an exhausting day , pulling folks out of wet situations . The Buick is now safe to drive , probably the safest Buick ( for it's year and model ) in the entire U S of A . My boss lives less than a mile away & he has a ?? If im remember correctly a 320 Bobcat with tracks & also a Guil telihandler with sevral different attachments for both. We use them for his solor business. But I can't even describe how handy those are! There ain't hardly nuthin we can't get dun with that equipment.

That was a hair too close on getting fuel to the exhaust. Good thing you managed to solve it before it would have caught fire. Seeing mojo just wack the hammer is actually so relaxing. Specially after having a hard day at work. Love the disc brake conversion.
