For simplicity, you need something from the early to mid 1980s. Carburettors, non-assisted steering, no electronic systems, and everything accessible under the hood. Changing the serpentine belt in my old Triumph is a 30 minute job start to finish. And that includes a tea & cigarette break mid job.

I don't want a computer on wheels either, maybe it's because I started motoring in the 80's but that's what I like, analogue clocks on the dash, proper switches rather than touch screen etc. Older vehicles I can repair myself too, never taken a vehicle to a garage in my life, couldn't afford to pay someone else anyhow.

Agreed. Personally, I blame the introduction of power steering and fuel injection for the ruination of driving pleasure. It led to where we are now. Modern cars are no fun at all. They're too big, they're too heavy, they have too much silly tech, and they're devoid of all road feel. Old cars are just better. If it doesn't have a carburettor or 'arm-strong' steering, it ain't worth having.

I've been driving 58 years. I started in bangers. Before MOT. Breathalyser. It's not the modern cars I don't like but all the petty rules. 20 mile an hour. 1 mile over the speed limit your done. Spend more time watching the speedometer than the road in the older cars. Cyclist who pay nothing towards costs, having priority. Pedestrians not taking responsibility for their own safety, When I lived on the continent children were brought up to respect traffic. Not here. Mothers letting toddlers run loose. Oh we can't put reins on them we are controlling them, their not dogs. Dogs are better trained. A few days ago I almost removed a toddler she ran out from behind a car & mother caught her. just. I stopped several yards further on. I didn't get out or I'd have given that mother a piece of my mind. First time I came so close in 58 years. All because they won't use reins. I'd much rather have a live child.

I've always preferred old, small, underpowered cars to these big horsepower modern things. They're light, nimble, they're better communicators, and you can use all of the performance without breaking the speed limit. I have much more fun in my 1981 Triumph with 70 hp, than I would in a Ferrari Aventador or Lamborghini 488 that can only be driven at six tenths on the public roads.

The manufacturers have moved towards race car technology to improve the performance out of smaller engines; F1 use 1600cc getting huge hp but will strip the engine down after each racing weekend. As lovely as you feel the Merc is, I doubt it will ever make to a grand old age before a failure makes it uneconomical to repair.

Couple months ago I switched from a simple 2007 Subaru Liberty (Australian model, Legacy elsewhere) to 2012 equally simple Toyota Aurion and got familiarised with it in 2 minutes. New cars are just over the top complicated mess.

The problem with squeezing as much power as possible out of tiny engines is they are so stressed they don't last very long, especially in bigger cars. The Ford 1-litre Ecoboost is one example, and VW made a 1.4 which was supercharged and turbocharged. Had a very short life. Big engines are much less stressed.

Buy or test an F80 M car. Modern comfort & safety, tech isnt overwhelming, box & engine are reliable as hell once the crankhubs been done, Buttons are where they should be. Gauge cluster is analogue/half digital. Can even get them in a manual. Note: Most of your issues with cars is because it takes the avg consumer a few weeks to get accustomed to a new cars set up. Objectively haptic wheel controls are ass. Not defending them in the slightest.

Bit harsh to say nobody wants a Hummer. The US military make quite good use of them.
@michaelj32829 күн бұрын
You don't see many Hummer H2 (or 3) here in the UAE is because they are so last decade +, this is why there are very few (for examples Testarossas on the road now, and the market for them (Pre 2010 cars) is really depressed, buy a decent lhd and sell it back in Europe, you will make a decent amout of cash on them, cos no-one wants them here. Other than me of course, I'd take their hands off for one. I get stopped in my Dolly Sprint here all the time - when I take it out - which is perhaps 4 times a year - no-one has ever seen one before.
