People speculate that Freddie Mercury and Queen were not as big as the recent biopic would have you believe. They were just another 1970′s/1980’s band amongst literally dozens of others. The Beatles probably thought about Queen about as much as the rest of us. It's very interesting how a movie can raise the profile of a group as the biopic did.
The Beatles attacked Country/Western, Pop, Indian music, psychedelic music, rock and rock and roll. With that said, let's dive into the video and see what The Beatles thought about Queen.

Apparently, Paul McCartney once said that if John Lennon hadn’t died, they would’ve *Come Together* for Live Aid

Yeah, as Live Aid was perfectly inline with Lennon's "War is over if you want it" way of thinking. Let's fantasize about what they would have played. They'd probably start with a strong rocker such as "I saw her standing there", follow that up with a strong John song, perhaps "Please. please me" before mellowing out with "Here comes the sun" and "Imagine" before ending it with "Hey Jude" and Combining that song with "Give peace a chance" ...If only...

The closest John and Paul came to perfoming together was for Saturday night live before it became trash. There was a joke on the live show about paying them a few hundred dollars to play on the show. Maca was at John's apartment a few blocks from the show and they almost went in to play unannounced. But they then decided not to.

Also worthy of mention, that in ‘The Night Comes Down’ from Queen’s debut album, one of the first lyrics is a nod to the Beatles. The lyric is “Lucy was high, and so was I.”

If I can recall John Lennon once mentioned Queen in a magazine interview in the mid/late 70's. Not anything about them. I believe it was a question about if the Beatles would ever regroup again. John's response was that it would never happen and that Beatles fans should move on and listen to new bands like for example Queen.

@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 3 жыл бұрын
There was a lot of mutual admiration there. Paul McCartney also recently took part in a book that was written about Queen, from a fan's perspective, that was really a nice and very graceful gesture from him. The Beatles are obviously the best selling artists and band of all time, and Queen is actually the second best selling band of all time, and the 4th best selling artists of all time. These bands do have some similarities, two similarities are that they were both great at writing good melodies, both bands also composed very complex music, but in a manner that the general public could still enjoy. I personal believe this is a big part of their success. Queen was the best streaming legacy artists before the terrible Bohemian Rhapsody movie. Out of all the older bands and artists Queen does the best on streaming platforms such as Spotify. Steaming platforms are often associated with a more youthful audience. This could perhaps be one of the big reasons why the Bohemian Rhapsody movie was made in the very first place, the executives knew there would be a big youthful audience for this movie. It can often surprise some American audiences that Queen has managed to sell more albums then The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin since these bands were more popular in America. But Queen sold a lot of albums in other places around the world. The Beatles were obviously a monumental inspiration for everyone from the 60's and 70's, and even today. In the quotes from Freddie Mercury about John Lennon he was specifically referring to writing songs with political messages, or songs about peace, but just before his death he did write more message type of songs. There is a photo with Freddie Mercury and Ringo Star so they have met as well. There was also a story that John Lennon really loved the song, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Paul McCartney wrote a song in the late 80's that he wanted to perform with Freddie Mercury, but Freddie Mercury was already very sick at this point, and he just concentrated on creating more Queen music. Queen has said that they used The Beatles recording techniques as a bible, and they tried to add to the recording techniques as technology became better over the years. These days both Brian May and Paul McCartney are concerned with animal rights. There is a lot of quotes and connections you can find between both bands.
@grandtheftmanualv945
@grandtheftmanualv945 3 жыл бұрын
Hey zen! I would just say that the movie took about 12 years to make, and no doubt Brian wanted to do it even before then, so I doubt the motivation was anything to do with streaming. Brian just wanted Freddie's story told, and I guess he is happy to have the story washed out to make it more accessible to a younger audience - maybe the youth/stream culture contributed to the taming of the story? Would be nice to have a more 'warts and all' version of the movie - adult rated of course!

@Diane Limojo I agree. Earlier interviews with Macca and also Ringo have not been very favourable. Factual but not overly respectful. I am a fan of the Beatles as a band but I do believe - personally - that Paul thinks the Beatles should always be considered 'the greatest' and probably has some resentment to Queen's long-standing and ever growing popularity. The difference really (between arguably the two biggest bands ever) is that the Beatles made pioneering inroads in music which is hard for younger kids to understand, as well as some fantastic songs, but on the whole Queen made music which is more timeless and wide ranging, and Queen had a Freddie (which is a huge advantage in any band wanting to achieve success).

John Lennon did mention Queen once. He said his son Julian had turned him on to Queen, but he still hadn't listened to their music. I think that was just before Queen's big breakthrough success with A night at the opera/Bohemian Rhapsody. I've never heard of his thoughts about the actual music of Queen though. John had been absent from the music world for 5 years and then was suddenly taken from us in 1980. But I'm sure he must've heard some of Queen's music on the radio or on Tv. Not sure if it was his thing, though. McCartney said himself he wouldn't be interested in doing the kind of flamboyant things Queen and Freddie did, but that he admired them nonetheless. The Beatles and Queen are two of my favorite rock bands ever. And John Lennon and Freddie Mercury are my idols since I was a kid.

A few corrections; - John wasn't feuding with the other Beatles: George played on the Imagine album, Ringo played on several albums and Paul visited him during the "Long lost weekend" era when John lived in LA. Before he was murdered, John heard the Paul song "Coming up" which inspired him to start writing songs again, calling up Paul and the two of them making plans to start a tour together. ...If only... - The red Special that George is playing wasn't Brian's original, you can tell by it saying "Guild" on the headstock.

George wasn't playing Brian's original RS. The clue is quite clearly in the "Guild" headstock. Guild made copies of the Red Special in the late 70s/early 80s. They were mostly not very good (as replicas) but fetch a high price today. Also, Ringo Starr was on Queen's "Magic Years" video documentary in 1986. He was typically jokey, in which he says "Oh, the rock band Queen? Yes I know them, but never liked them." *someone hands him a big wad of cash* "For this," (holding up one note) "I like them a lot." "And for *this*," (holding up the rest) "What a great gang of guys!!"

Sorry to go off track, but it always irks me a bit when Brian May talks about how Queen is 40+ years together and going strong. I love Roger and Brian, but without Freddie and Deaky, Queen is basically a Queen Cover band these days. I do think when the 4 were all together, they were the greatest, and with so many fans out there. New fans everyday, it’s cool they have been able to find 2 unique singers so far that having tried to mimic Freddie in the least. I do think that’s cool of the because of the fans

That's certainly your right to think that way, but I for one am glad that the name lives on in this way. Missed the opportunity to see Queen with Freddie as I was too young in 86, but finally got the opportunity to be in the same room as Brian and Roger six years ago, and fulfilled that ambition of hearing the Red Special live and unabridged, accompanied by Roger! There were never going to be opportunities to see those two together in any other guise than Queen. I'm grateful for the way things are, and I believe that half of Queen still rocks!

This is all very subjective. Whenever music fans of specific bands or artists are asked about who is the better in any way, they will inevitably be completely biased and pick their own personal favourite out of them. As for me, I love both bands equally because although they were entirely different from each other, The Beatles AND Queen were both hugely talented in their own way. So why don't we just enjoy the great, iconic music that each of those legendary acts left us, instead of constantly comparing and arguing among ourselves about who is the all round best between them?
@cinemacrema2349
@cinemacrema2349 3 жыл бұрын
I love them both and Freddy had the most powerful and beautiful voice but The Beatles have a magic to them that transcends just music, a lightning in the bottle that many songs by Queen had it also, but The Beatles is pretty much a few flawless albums from start to finish, with not even one single song that wasn't great and yet, totally different from the previous track, they were inventive in a way that no other band has ever got close to it so far... to be honest probably never will be, and that's why they're so highly regarded as the bests ever by other legends like Queen, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc...although that still causes a lot of controversy among fans from those other bands, the bands themselves agree with what I'm saying!

I think Marc Bolan may of gave Freddie the idea to put together Bohemian Rhapsody as 3 songs into 1. Back in 71 you will find Marcs song "There was a Time". Fantastic song but not on the same level of Queens go at it, but he tried first maybe putting three songs into one. But again, i have no doubt Marc got this idea from a long Beatles song which has escaped me as he was a massive fan and a friend of the band. I think Marc Bolan also influenced many many people, but as he was only on this planet a very short time people forget that moment in time very easily. I did and i am ashamed of myself lol.
