This is the big question: What did this cost? It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't cheap. Watch to find out!

Especially if you're talking about futue IFR, you should really consider getting the Garmin GFC500 autopilot - it's made to interface with the G5s and will give you crazy amounts of capability and safety, at a really relatively low price. Interfaced with the G5s, it can fly GPS courses, climb at a fixed airspeed (so much safer than VS mode), can fly coupled ILS and RNAV LPV / GPS approaches to minimums and has the 'LVL' mode for safety if you become spatially disorintated. Having two G5s and no AP is borderline criminal! (I'm joking of course, but the GFC500 is an absolutely essential next step for your current set up).

Just upgraded as part of the annual on my Cardinal. Annual's not done yet, so haven 't flown with the G5s yet. Looking forward to it. Thanks for your motivational video(s) on the topic :-) I might save up for one of them fancy Garmin GPS units or at least the Nav/Com to tie it into the G5's. My KX175 is about done

@@Over50andLearningToFly Emil was my favorite neighbor when I was growing up and unfortunately he passed away recently at age 70. His wife had died 20 years earlier. I was visiting my folks and Emil's son walked over and asked if I was still playing golf. I said yes, and he wanted to know if I wanted any of Emil's clubs. I went over to his garage, and Emil had 17 golf bags with full sets of barely used clubs in them, and maybe a hundred drivers, wedges, hybrids, etc in the rafters. Hundreds of balls. 4 pull carts, 1 electric pull cart. You single guys drive me crazy.

You are so right! Value more than $$ spent. I always say, you can make more money, but you can't get your time in your life back! I put in an L3 Lynx NGT-9000 transponder in my Seneca I recently and so glad I did. It has its own screens (2 of them) and displays weather and traffic, and you can select winds and other information, choose which screen you want for traffic or weather. Makes for less jumble than on one screen, plus its great back up if something else fails. Bluetooth straight to Foreflight on my phone and Ipad. My next stop is a G5 back up or Aspen. I feel perfectly safe with two vacuum pumps but we all know how things like to fail at the worst possible moment. Watched an Air Safety Institute video on the poor fellow in a V-Tail Bonanza who lost his vac system in a bad weather system, ended up augering in trying to fly partial panel in IMC. Who knows what the turbulence was doing or other factors. Plus it was obvious from the tone and the questions of the controller that he did not understand the grim severity of the pilot's situation. See, "Accident Case Study: Single Point Failure." Well, as usual, I responded too much! I think it's important to share as we all learn, everyday. Aviation is not forgiving part time endeavor. You need to be all in, or all out. Not halfway. When I'm PIC, I'm all in, baby!! When I'm not PIC, I'm thinking about 'what ifs' and planning for the next great mission, which could include unforeseen emergencies. When I'm flying I'm not dancing to tunes blaring from a music connection - I'm listening to the tunes of the engines, and I may dance with joy at being on the best place on earth -- above it! But as I'm smiling and appreciating the greatest freedoms we enjoy on this planet, I'm watching. Looking around. Watching. And I'm thinking those what ifs, and I'm looking for fields to put her down if the worst thing happens. I'm a PILOT.

I appreciate your perspective! I don't think many people can justify the cost of general aviation financially. It's more like I have $50k and I would have more fun with an airplane than a pocket full of money.

Agreed the initial cost of learning to fly is expensive. After getting your initial license, there are ways to minimize your flying costs. I spend 85 a month to be a member of a 30 member flight club with access to 2 planes whenever I want. Essentially, I am 1/30ths owner of 2 airplanes for 85 a month.

I wish I could sit down with some of the guys who have upgraded their airplane and ask why you went with some things you did. My flight club is looking to upgrade our airplanes and we have some issues with other avionics so we started looking at the Garmin GNX 375 which would be a solution to fix our problems. I am curious why you are looking at the 175 and didn't install the 375 if you bought a new transponder. An airplane seems like a house, you will always have something you want to do with it but either not enough time or not enough money.

@@Over50andLearningToFly ok thanks for the reply. I have a Cessna 175 that needs at least an ads-b upgrade and debating on the GTX 335 or a skybeacon. I have a gns430 non Wass and use a strattux for ads-b in at the moment. I'm thinking the transponder upgrade from my 330 is probably the better route. I also like your choice on the g5's to eliminate the problematic and antiquated vacuum system. 👍

smorrow5 get the solution that you’ll be the happiest with ... A lot of people said or may say that my solution for my airplane wasn’t the most cost-effective but I really don’t care. Not that I want to throw money away I still feel it was a very good investment in my airplane as far as safety and having good equipment but also the peace of mind that having proper equipment in my airplane brings me. You can’t put a price on that
@smorrow5

@@Over50andLearningToFly I agree, great advice. Being cheap after you buy a plane probably isn't the smartest approach. It's an expensive hobby/endeavor in the first place and with safety an upmost concern you sometimes just have to spend money. As I get the money I plan to do pretty much the same upgrade as you. Thanks again and happy/safe flying. Scott
