That is unless you’re a good DJ. Then all of your mixes are like that. At least with mine they are. Plus doing the actual mixing, and not having a computer do it for you, is a huge part as well. Especially if all you’re working with is vinyl, without the use of computers.

I really "love" how nowadays people judge a DJ with the setup they play on. I have a lot of DJ friends who started to spin house music discs since 90's, and most of them told me back in the day, they dreamed about vinyls which could gather more than 100 tracks, because it was really annoying to transport flycases everywhere. They also told me they wanted to have some technical help to match the beats so they could focus more on the performance itself, the search of the next track, the overall mood on the dancefloor. Nowadays, everyone are looking for a way to judge people the negative way. If you are a DJ and you perform with a controller, then you must be a "nooby who thinks he is a DJ but he couldn't even mixtempo 2 vinyls". If you play with CDJ then you must be a "guy who does not hear the real difference between the vinyl crackles warm sound and the over compressed mp3 320 which make the sound crappy". If you are a vinyl DJ then you must be an "elitist underground hipster boi who think he is the elite of the DJs because he can play with vinyls". If you are a producer and you make a live with ableton, then you must be an "assisted dude who can't use modular and analog gears". If you use analog gears then you must be a "Rich nerd who spend his whole money in synth and who thinks he is better than anyone else". The most important thing IMO is not only the technique itself. It's how you spread good vibes and how people feel them. With the best intentions and the best mood come the best parties and the most legendaries DJ sets/performances.

Agrume and then you get to the point that people’s opinions don’t actually matter. People get salty about the gear and forget that djing is an art form. It’s the same as saying Picasso was a terrible painter because of the brush he used. What matters is the end product, how you get there and how you want to portray the art is the only thing that matters. People who have those opinions are uneducated on the topic and or are caught up in their own egos/complacencies to be relevant. Have a good day :)

Always the music FIRST. Not the formats you use. Not the equipment you use. Not how good you are at beatmatching. I remember Vinyl-only DJ's criticising me when I mixed with MiniDisc, CD and a Turntable. I used them simply because the music I wanted to mix was ON those mediums, I didn't have the music anywhere else. Pisses me off when people are elitist about using Vinyl (or criticise Digital DJ's) and forget that amazing music may not exist on those other formats... Thanks for the tutorial Doctor.

Responding 2 years later, but couldn't pass by, haha. DJing is actually a special case of engineering, which is creating systems to solve people's problems. The only thing that matters in any sort of engineering is that a system should solve a problem in a particular context. Be it space travel in 2021 or relieving people from stress at a dance party. How - it doesn't matter as long as it works. Obsession with instruments is counterproductive and should not be tolerated. Those who do that chase secondary motives, or simply don't understand this simple but crucial engineering paradigm.

This is from a technical aspect. As a club DJ for many years you'll have club owners repeatedly tell you they have never made one dime on the dance floor. Speaking as a professional club DJ, knowing how to read a crowd and rotate groups of patrons on and off the floor, and to the bar to buy drinks, is an additional skill set one needs to possess. Owners have told me their sales increase when I spin. This is what makes my pay worth it for the owners. Great music, awesome showmanship, killer technical mixing/on-the-fly remixing, and always remembering to make the club money can be a challenging evening.... And fun as hell!

@awcroy1
@awcroy1 5 жыл бұрын
I rotate the dance floor by playing different genres. I don't want to kill the energy level. This is a club that plays hip-hop, top 40, dance, techno... no rock. By reading the crowd I can tell what groups will dance to what style of music. I'll play different sets with a "bridge" song linking them together to keep the energy and flow going. I've worked on a style over 20 years and still am perfecting it today.

I love your explanation - crystal clear, logical, respectful to a range of DJs. I'm lucky to have been musically trained (jazz rather than classical) so I may be biased - but to those people commenting here who say that DJs don't "make" music - they do, during a thoughtful or creative transition. Track 1 is playing, Track 2 is lined up to play next, but what happens when you weaving those two together is Track 3 - and entirely up to the imagination of the DJ.

Pretty much covered the basics in this video which is exactly what you set out to do. Also important to add that as technology moves forward it opens up the possibly for creativity. Yes you can press a button to sync 2 tracks and mix them pretty easily now as opposed to mixing vinyl. What this does is allow djs to add more elements... notice the 8 buttons at the bottom of the decks.... you can use these to add more loops, samples, vocals etc. Some djs might have 3 or 4 bits of tracks on the go at the same time. There is way more possibilities than shown in the video guys.

Being DJ doesn't exactly mean that we only have to be presing buttons and swap songs; it's actually about doin it well and sincronized... but what really defines a DJ, is the Music Set itself: selecting a next song that can keep the ambience and mood, also it's not necesary to be mainstream songs, even the DJ ones if he is also a producer and/or composer, and i think that's what the DJ's are doing: let them know that there's good songs from underground artist and give them some attention if you at least like one of his tracks.

I've DJ'ed around when I was younger and someone learned me a great lesson, that is just as important in Music and even in your life; just play for yourself, do what you want to do, play what you want to hear in the way that you would like to hear it. And it doesn't matter if you can't beatmix or know any tricks just select great tracks and mix the ends together, if the tracks are good, so is your set. As a DJ I think you should leave the tricks at home and just have a great selection that builds up to a climax so the last track is a climax of your whole set and this should be the thing they remember your set by, your special weapon, a killer track that you really, really love and gets your blood cooking. So you start with a groovy slow track, forget the crowd, mix in stuff you like, just like you would like to hear them come together and just in the last 30 minutes of the set up the tempo and set the stage for this one awesome track you love and makes you want to move and get you going, then introduce it and let rip. And let it play until the end so the people can see who rocked their little world just now, take a bow and let the next one have a go. (Or make your own party so you can always close, closing sets have to be the best, it's what every one remembers)

Musicians are very special people who give us spectacular expression of emotion in their productions. Unfortunately, these days such expressions are rarely longer than a few minutes in length. The modern DJ takes the efforts of multiple artists and arranges them into a presentation spanning up to several hours. The best DJ’s surf the emotions of the crowd, manipulating the mood through song selection and mixing, sometimes subtle, sometimes bold and aggressive. It’s a bit like sewing a patchwork quilt. Each patch a piece of beauty in its own right but brought together in an ensemble by the DJ.

Weighing in as a club DJ for nearly 15 years, having hosted long running nights, played alongside some big names like Steve Aoki and the Bloody Beetroots (before they were embarrassing, so 2008/9), and having DJed on almost everything - from vinyl to Ableton Live - I've heard some really stupid shit about DJing, the technical side and the performance side - and basically *what are you even doing up there?!* Bottom line, like literally any other musical discipline, technology can be a tool or a crutch. Vinyl can be a crutch too, for example - it can be a draw card and/or an excuse for relatively poor playing, look at any bar that advertises an 'all vinyl night' or something like that - It's no guarantee of skill, only of medium. If you exploit, say, Ableton Live, and do something with it that would be extremely difficult or impossible with CDJs or vinyl, cutting and bringing back loops on the fly from two tracks, while mixing aspects of another two - in other words, letting the tempo sync take some of the busy work out of your hands while doing something else - That's a good and valid use of the method! You can push it and come up with some truly wild stuff, even having totally continuous control over the master BPM has incredible power that you seldom see used. Harmonic mixing can also be much more deliberate. Likewise, if you're hitting play on two tempo sync'd tracks and fist pumping, well - you might not be a bad person, but that's pretty lazy. Likewise, vinyl has the dumb 'purity' thing around it, and while it's really fun, it can also be limited, depending on what you're trying to do. People will fucking *always* tell you it's better, or that it's REAL DJing for some inane reason. Probably because vinyl makes you work for it, you're always digging for the next one, finding the next track, getting it together in time. It forces you to approach it totally differently. But ultimately, that's just another way to spend your time in the booth. Not better - just different. DJing at it's heart is track selection, which is easy to do, and hard to do well. It's psychology. Reading the crowd is just a platitude - if you're good, you *lure* the crowd. You suck them in, with pacing, with choice, by playing with their sense of nostalgia, anything. For this reason, some DJs are excellent starters, and some are great closers. They have the sensitivity (or lack of it, where needed), to do the right thing at the right time. So yeah, surprise surprise, it has a nuance to it! Vinyl, USB, laptops - Don't judge people based on method, just on the selection, the ability, and the judgement.

Bingo, PK. I have trained quite a few damn good DJs in my time, as well as doing it myself since the early 90s. I tell my guys that song selection is at least 70 percent of the game. Presentation (which includes mixing, MC skills and interaction with people) is about 25 percent - which means it's important but not necessarily a deal-breaker. That last 5 percent is your own particular personality/pinache/je ne sais quois... the little things you do to make your style unique and entertaining. Lots of guys excel in one area but are either lacking or maybe just OK at the other stuff. If you are good at all three aspects, you are a rare (and valuable) beast.

Do you wanna know the truth? I worked as a ghost writer for djs for nearly 13 years. Today with the digital there is no talent to swap 2 songs and many famous dj are more marketing than anything else. Most of them use premixed stuff and many dj "producers" have no idea what a keyboard is... Many years ago the situation was different because a good dj had to discover a good song hearing thousand of cynils and remixing it, was not so easy.

I think you missed a pretty important point, and that is to match the cue points on both sides. So for example track A is playing - you should set the starting point on track B to the 1st or 8th beat (like on a crash for example, usually it is on the beginning of the loop), and then wait for track A to also have a crash or when you know the loop will start over. When it does, that's exactly the moment you should start playing track B (So the crashes fall on top of each other). Then you can start mixing track B in, and again make the biggest changes(like swap the bass) on those 1st or 8th bars. This way people will anticipate something coming, so it will feel more natural and musical. I don't know if i explained this well, but if anyone has any questions I'd gladly help.

Don't need to watch this because I'm a DJ but it's still nice to see someone explain it in such a simple way. People don't get the precision and creativity that the best DJs have when mixing, the clever use of effects mid-song and how much they can change the whole dancefloor's mood. It's kind of like jazz, you play an already pre-made song but really bleed your personality into it so that it feels unique every time.

I respect DJs for what they do and their skill is incredible. You had me all the way to the end when you said they were "musicians". While it may be semantics, to me the words "technical wizards" (or something describing the skills necessary which more accurately identifies what they do) would be a better way to describe them. Yes, they are playing music, but they are not creating the music from scratch (unless they were the ones who played the music they mix). If I take another's work and re-arrange it or add/subtract elements to it, this does not make me a "musician" in the truest sense of the word. If a DJ feels they can't live without being called a musician or that any other word doesn't describe what they do, it could be an ego thing, but when that DJ can have a deep discussion of music theory or play (like you do) a musical instrument well, then I will consider them a "musician". In any case, your presentation of song transition shows that there is much more skill in DJing than pushing buttons and flipping switches. Excellent!
@badbeardbill9956
@badbeardbill9956 Жыл бұрын
Old comment, but I’d argue that musicianship is by no means limited to something so narrow. The studio is effectively an instrument in its own right, and so too the turntable. Plenty of DJs also know about music and its elements, even theory. If you like you might call it live arranging, or something analogous to conducting. But since the decisions are implemented by the DJ, the DJ may as well also be a musician.

I have DJ’d some wedding receptions and the best thing the owner of the facility told me is that people often make the mistake in thinking they can just plug in their mp3 device with a playlist and that’s it. She said she had seen that fail many, many times. That could not be more true! As many have commented, it’s about knowing your music, audience and keeping the vibe. You may also have to be the Master of Ceremonies and keep the flow of the party or reception going etc. In my experience it is a lot harder than it looks!

What really defines a good DJ is the selection of songs or records ( vinyls in my case ) that he or she uses to keep the crowd on the dance floor dancing and maintaining that dance floor with people for hours until the club closes. That's my opinion and I'm confident that anyone who was a DJ back in the 70's and used two turntables a mic, & a mixer and had to transport cases upon cases of vinyl would agree. I was so good in playing the right records not necessary in sequence that I NEVER used the mic only at the end of the night to say "last call at the bar". My music spoke for itself by the dance floor being so packed that people was dancing on the both sides of the dance floor. The dance floor was elevated with lights on each corner and it was huge. I even had a guest DJ come to my club and within the first 10 minutes of him sitting in the booth with me asked me why don't I talk on the mic. I told him to look out in the crowd and look at the dance floor. At the end of the night he said to me I see what you mean. You don't need a mic you had the crowd dancing all night. The name of the club that I know I personally but Atlantic City,New Jersey on the map as being the hottest club in the try-state area was called the Chez Paree located on New York Ave and the boardwalk. People came from all over on Friday and Saturday nights and had a good time. No fighting, shootings or none of that stuff that goes on in clubs these days. Now I will be the first to admit that the equipment that DJ's currently use now is great and with the technology of today makes it easy because the DJ's of today don't need to carry cases and cases of vinyl along with the turntables, mixer (etc). I would love to learn how to use a controller. I think being a good DJ in this day and age using the controllers that are out there now also are very skilled and are very talented. Anyone want to give me advise on a good controller to purchase and give me lessons ? I'm retired as a DJ but I mix music every day on my computer using GarageBand.

But in the studio you can do trial and failure time after time till you get that result you are looking for. On the other hand, I've always admired people who is capable to perform with an instrument, because I'm aware how many work, practice, studies are necessary to achive a good level. I think I would be a better producer if I would able to play an instrument. I think it gives you another point of view, thats why I think is the next level. Thanks for encouraging me mate!

I've been a club DJ since my first residency in '89 straight out of high school. 90% of being a DJ in a live setting is playing to your audience regardless of what type of music you're playing. Some audiences don't want to hear beat mixing and the same tempo for hours on end but that depends on what genre of music you're playing and the crowd. I've seen amazing DJ's with an empty floor and I've seen DJ's who don't do anything fancy or technical pack a club for 5 hours straight. Most of it is knowing your crowd and playing a solid format that they enjoy. Doesn't matter if you're playing records, CDJ's or off a laptop, good DJs use equipment that they're most comfortable with. A good DJ also knows music theory, without that they don't mix in the right places of a song or match the time signature correctly. Also, the key the songs are in doesn't really matter because most songs aren't in the same key the whole time. As far as the video, creating loops and tweaking high, mid and low with the crossfader sitting static in the middle, DJ's really don't do that in a live setting. They just find two sweet spots in the tracks, match the beat and do a nice transition. It's a cool effect that these machines can pull off but that's mostly for creating music in a studio setting. His levels are the same for both songs either. Doing those things in a live setting over a massive club sound system with absolutely sound awful. The real talent is with DJ's who can do all that by ear without software doing it for them. He's got the jist down but if he's playing for an audience that just looks at him like "?" none of that matters.

The same you could say to musicians: They play a tone and then they play another tone. xD That are the very basics of what a DJ does and might be enough if you are a DJ for wedding partys. Professional DJing actually has a high effort of preparing your life performances. It starts with building up your music library and learning to know thousands of songs, especially knowing where and when you can make the transitions. There are also much more possibilitys how to make transistions which are the way more complicated than shown in this video. The transitions in this video may work with house music with long intros and outros but try that with modern hiphop music. You'll fail. Even if you use the automatic detection not every song will be detected correctly by the software. In this case you have to fix it manually. Sometimes you have to edit songs. What about cuttig and scratching? What about remixing songs on the fly, for example working with 4 decks (and more) simultaneously. Therefore you need a lot of practice with your equipment. It's like learning an instrument. A DJ is also a entertainer. The difference between good and bad DJs is that good DJs know their audience and how they can fire them up and interacting with them while bad DJs simply play one song after another as shown in this video.

This video is basic but it doesn't show a bad DJ, there is no audience but the truth is that most DJ's play one song after another as planned, and that performance isn't much different from other music being played live, a band will most likely play the songs they agreed upon in an order. Musicians really play a tone, and need more practice hours to learn to play a complexed song or tune because they actually play an instrument. A DJ can be high on drugs and it's possible that nobody notices it in the music that is played because he or she isn't playing an instrument and a lot of work is done even before the real performance, a musician needs to practice and perform but a DJ can prepare 90% of his songs before hand and doesn't really need to have much pressure but just enough freedom to make certain things sound different live but doing things live and improvising can be a part of the performance both for a dj and a musician. In general there is a similarity where many dj's don't choose to play their own songs live and the same can be said for classical musicians that practice other compositions and play them and not their own, but the difference is that it's harder to become a good classical musician and even more harder to aquire a whole orchestra in comparison to just hire 1 guy that will be the DJ.

How people started commenting on something that they have no idea who he is or what he does. He's just simply amazing! Without people like Dr mix, DJs wouldn't even exist.

I have been both a musician and a D.J. for over 30 years now. Both areas are pretty challenging if performed correctly, believe me. The problem is that nowadays there are thousands of ridiculous “buttons-pressers” that call themselves “Djs” and this is where I totally agree with musicians that hate them. Calling these clowns “D.J.s” is like calling a monkey a drummer just because he is jumping on a drum kit... Anyway, thanks for the video. Cheers...
