Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading,
I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
Our goal each season is to preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Avoiding single use plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances is important to us and we are trying to live an older style life, balanced with this modern world.

We have a community of Muscovy ducks in the Atlanta suburbs. They roam the neighborhood eating bugs and grass. They live in two backyards as far as I know and also under a porch in someone's front yard. I love watching them, especially when they have new chicks. I have no idea if any of them are consumed etc. None of the neighbors seem to mind. I certainly don't mind. I have never seen foxes in this area but I would be shocked if there are none around.

I loved using straw in drier areas. I live in a wetland now. All clay. If I use straw it molds almost immediately. I was forced to switch to wood chips. Luckily they're cheaper than straw here for some reason. My ducks are Pekins and they live in my garden. I keep a tall cattle bowl full of clean fresh water daily and I refill they're pond twice a week. I only have 2 ducks. This works out fine forme.nice video. It's always interesting to view another's perspective

We're planning on getting a small flock of laying hens and a couple small milking goats but we have some predators in our backyard, I'm not quite sure how to protect them yet. Corey Dewhurst hello Corey from the High Country, one of my favourite places, it’s so beautiful up there. I ferment the grains because it create good bacteria for the poultry’s gut to make them healthier and it also makes the grain go further- about 40% further, so that is most beneficial for the wallet. I have a fermenting grain video if you’d like to see how I do it. Thanks for stopping by, lovely to meet you 😊

How have I only just seen this video? Wonderful! What do you do with all the straw? Does it just rot down or do you have to annually dig it all out and start over?
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 5 жыл бұрын
Brimwood Farm Geoff you have been super busy with your job I believe 😊 we periodically remove the poopy straw for layers in our compost bins and garden beds and when it gets to a certain muckiness (I think I just made that word up?) we remove as much as we can to the compost and more straw is added. Sometimes I just add extra straw on top to prevent any smells, until I can get to it but in saying that, there is plenty of air flow, as it’s mostly and outside area so it’s not too bad at all. As I mostly have ducks, it’s a mixture of the straw, poop and soil that they have mixed in and big fat worms 😃🌱 it’s really wonderful stuff.

@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Sandi Aberle fermenting time is variable depending on the temperature. In winter (temperatures of -6 to 11C) it can take 4 days and in summer (temperatures of 15C to 46C) 4 hours. I definitely use the duck water on all of my garden, we are in a drought so using the water is a must. I move the pools around so every plant gets a turn. 😊🦆

Me again! I've been letting one of my girls keep her eggs in hopes of hatching some chicks - this is the first time for me - and this morning when I let her out of the coop one of the eggs had been broken and eaten. This hen and a drake are new to my flock and currently in quarantine together so I am not sure which of them did it but I am wondering if I should be concerned? She has 4 eggs unbroken and I am wondering if I should move them to one of my older hens or just let it play out and see what happens?? It seems a bit worrisome to me but I have nothing to base it off of and I can't find any information on this online. Thank you in advance!

Hello Maggie, clearly you have good taste in waterfowl. I am a fan of muscle cars and of course pronounced Ford Coupe differently to Chicken coupe..... and I though there were different spellings of the word coop/coupe/coup in different countries, yet you are the first person to enlighten me that this is not actually the case. This certainly goes to the saying, “you can’t believe everything you think you know” Thanks for letting me know, I will be updating my videos. 😊

Alaska Prepper hi AP, yes we process all by hand, a big job as ducks have twice as many feathers than chickens and they are so big, but very delicious and very rewarding. The eggs get used for everything from cherry custard tart to broccoli, spinach and Brie quiche or roast pumpkin, rocket and blue vein cheese quiche... duck egg and bacon is also good. What breed of chicken do you think you’ll get?

Loved the tour. Thx so much! You have a great set-up there, Elissa. Made me wish I was a duck. (female, that is. I don't wanna go to freezer camp) Lol. Do any wild predators ever succeed getting in the coupe? Looked like a nice winter day. Are you having a mild winter, so far?
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 6 жыл бұрын
HootOwl Holler hello, our Winter has been cold with many beautiful, sunny days and freezing nights, it’s just getting started really. This was a particularly freaky warm winters day of 17C the next day was 7C. Yes being a duck (female or a chosen drake) is fairly good here for sure. The crows and hawks seem to know when their are babies, however we haven’t ever had an incident and they don’t bother the bigger birds. No other predators have been an issue although a few local cats and dogs have tried. Have a great day Hoot 💕
@hootowlholler3760
@hootowlholler3760 6 жыл бұрын
Elissa, "chosen drake" is right. I couldn't help but remember that you said you harvest the drakes in another video. :) When you harvest, do you skin them or do the feather plucking method? I had never seen a bird skinned; but over at Deep South Homestead, Danny skinned a turkey a few days ago. Just like skinning a rabbit.
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 6 жыл бұрын
HootOwl Holler first I pluck al the feathers off and then I skin the duck. I use the down feathers for filling doonas, the skin gets rendered down for duck fat, great for cooking with. Then I dissect the bird, some for freezing and some for canning and the carcass is used for making bone broth.
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 6 жыл бұрын
HootOwl Holler it all gets used, the big feathers even go in the compost and anything else gets buried to feed trees.

I raise chickens. And have one Muscovy female that is a recent addition to the farm. I really like this breed and would like to add a few more girls and a drake. But I'm afraid of the tales I've heard of the drakes trying to mate with female chickens. Have you had this problem? Also thanks for the tip on the charcoal. I'll be adding some of that manana.
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris Robles, congratulations on your latest edition. I have 2 main drakes to 10 ducks at the moment, in breeding season the numbers increase of course, but this is my base flock these days. The two males have never bothered the chicken as there are enough ducks to occupy them. The chickens get along quite well with my drakes and are often sharing a food bowl when they don’t have to and there has never been anything untoward between them. Now I did have a time, where males I breed were delayed in going to the freezer by a few months, so that meant way too many older teenage boys with one thing on their mind. So we did have a violation of a hen, much to our horror and within a few days the shelves and freezer had plenty of duck. I have since never let the teenagers get too old before processing and it has been fine. I hope this has helped. 😊

Wish I'd found this vid to begin with on muscovys.. spent hours searching for how to set up their sleep area etc. If I want to keep 2 or 3 in a pen in a suburban backyard in Melbourne, would a couple of big dog kennels raised off the ground a little filled with straw be ok for them to sleep and nest in or should I have a bigger area with hay bales for them
@MoatCottage
@MoatCottage 5 жыл бұрын
urbanrat84 hello and welcome to Moat Cottage, I have the dog kennels and cages on the ground, filled with straw and this is where they usually lay eggs but they don’t usually choose to sleep in them unless they go broody (and want to sit on the eggs) I have a couple, who on occasions, choose to sleep with the chickens but generally they all like to sleep under the stars on the bales or straw deep litter mulch. My coupe sleep area is protected from winds and hot summer sun, it gets way colder and hotter here than Melbourne. Your area sounds ok for the nights, as long as you’re letting them have more space in the daytime. See how they like it, spying on the is enlightening to see what they’re all doing and how they are behaving. I hope this has helped and enjoy your Muscovies

Your duck will be fine in those temperatures, so long as you keep suitable clean water up to them. I get heatwaves in the 116F and they do fine, they also do well hatching out at the end of Winter here too, which is temps of around 28F to 50F so they are very versatile birds.

Mark Lesniak hello, yes they get along quite well, so long as you don’t have too many drakes because the teenage drakes may get frisky with whatever lady they can get hold of and the main drake usually protects his ducks but not the chickens. @MoatCottage 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Anime fan forever, Muscovy ducks are shy and they do like to be with other birds. Do you have any other female ducks or hens? If the cockerel (young rooster) is inappropriate or the young duck is hurting her, then they would be the ones I’d be planning to put in the cooking pot. You don’t want to have too many male birds (ducks or roosters) because that’s when they can be problematic. You want to keep male birds that are good natured and breed with them too, so you have a harmonious and happy flock. I hope this helps. 🦆 🐓

@@MoatCottage tnx I found the problem my muscovy drake got into a habit of plucking and eating her feathers so he'll be going down tomorrow. And as for the rooster he isn't mature enough to breed so I doubt he'll do much damage. I have a pekin (not pure Aylesbury) drake who gets along with my muscovy hen so I'm hoping for some hinny ducklings next year.

Hello shaun em, are they Muscovy Ducks? if so the easiest way to tell is the boys are much bigger than the girls. There are also differences in the tail shape, I think that would be a future video when i have ducklings to show you the difference 😊
@markoorevic1385
@markoorevic1385 4 жыл бұрын
The boys are bigger, they grow caruncules (the red stuff on their beak) much faster, and as for tail shape the girls should have a U shaped tail and boys a V shaped tail if I remember correctly. Oh and the boys tend to be harder to catch when they're a little older.
