mycorrhizae is a beneficial fungi that clings to plant roots in
exchange for sugars made by the plant. There are two different types of
mycorrhizae ; endo and ecto. We will discss the difference and what
they do for your plants in the garden.
Here is where you can get both!
Endomycorrhizae - amzn.to/2bHvWr1
Ectomycorrhizae - amzn.to/2bPyRLx

I am taking a course in horticulture and here is a tip we learned. If you are applying mycorrhizae don't fertilize for about a week, or if you really want to fertilize make sure it is one low in Phosphorus. If the plants have a lot of avalible nutrients (particularly Phosphorus) they will not associate with the mycorrhizae.

cute, but u should know that’s bs. Ectomycorrhizal and endomycorrhizal fungi associate with all types of plants. Endo means the fungi penetrates the root cell tissues. Ecto means it doesn’t You only really need the right type of endomycorrhizal fungi - arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (ABM). ABM is the one that associates with almost any plant (~80% of all plants we know of). Ectomycorrhizal mostly associates with conifers and a few angiosperm trees so idk what the use of it would be here in this garden
@teacul

I appreciate the info here; this was a topic I had wondered about after seeing it at a store and hearing about it on another channel. I'm trying to learn an order of priorities for plants to do well and these are still an unknown to me as I've never tried doing anything special or buying any to insure the mycorrhizae colonize the roots of my plants, but as I progress with my skills as gardener and master some of the other constraints on my plants productivity, I'll eventually be looking to things like this to help naturally increase their production. At this point an experienced gardener could probably take on look at my setup and just have an intuition about it to say what the biggest limiting factors are that I could change immediately; 1)not enough sunlight? 2)not enough or too much water? 3)insufficient/ sub optimal nutrient feeding? 4)bad timing or planting (such as spacing or heights, time of year, climate, maybe I water at the wrong time of day)? 5)Specific problems with the soil like Ph or mycorrhizae? 6)Other things I haven't learned. Similarly, I'm trying to learn, what are the most cost effective (while being sustainable, or eventually sustainable), methods to make small or large improvement, and what those investments to make improvements I can reasonably expect to pay for themselves. One of the things I've learned from watching your show is the biggest limiting factors I can improve is my knowledge about growing things.

That's very helpful info, thnx Luke. Many of my trees have been stressed from last year's torrential rain, then drought (technically not drought but was unusually fair weather). This stuff came recomended when I bought an Iron bag, hope I can bring back color to my pine trees and help my oak & ash and even my veggie gardens. I know they have Iron deficiancy, I recently found out. My soil is very alkaline, hard growing anything.

ectomycorrhizae (at leas those that are well described) are very specific and infect only trees (my best guess is that goji berries and for sure strawberries are colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizae (endo)). note that brassica plants as well as chenopods/amaranthaceae (beets, amaranth, spinach) do not associate with mycorrhizae at all. nearly all other flowering plants do associate with mycorrhizae with a few exceptions (lupins for instance). personally I'm quite sceptical about inocula, I've done a scientific experiment with a commercial inoculum and didn't find any (!!!) signs of root colonization under the microscope... and generally mycorrhizae are very abundant in the soil, unless it was massively fertilized, tilled and sprayed with fungicides.

Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the science of this we cant see the forest for the trees. Im not being critical of the data and research, I know it is true. However, I have been gardening for sometime now almost exclusively with compost. It has been my experience that you can get very similar results, im suggesting the same results, with homemade compost and saving a ton of money in the process. Im not sure I see the need for products like this. Thanks again for sharing this Luke, your garden looks great.

I never garden without mycos in my garden and you are very right I am a member of a pepper community and it's so funny how many people ignore there root zone. Myself personally I keep mycos on hand several variety's and I also brew Earth worm, guano and molasses teas for even a more beneficial bacteria. People on the community always wonder why my peppers grow fast and I always tell them it's all about your roots. I know some people have issues with cold pressed algen but I have seen first hand what a good algen will do to your roots and it's nothing short of amazing!! A very good algen product that cost a little bit of money but makes your roots explode is house & gardens algen extract.

Great video. Luke, I do have a few questions though: 1. Is this good to use for all plants or certain types? Are there any plants which this can harm more than help? 2. At what point of the plant's life cycle do you do this? I assume you don't apply the mycorrhizae when sowing seeds. Do you apply this right after the plant brakes through the soil or after getting true leaves? 3. Since the mycorrhizae lives off of sugars from the plants, does this have any impact on the taste of the vegetables from your garden? Thanks!

One thing I watched I video I think it was a guy growing pot in cali. But he was doing a instead of microbe brew or tea he did fungi. He had a bag like yours but he fermented like oats or barely for a week and put in a glass dish with some plastic cover and added the fungi and it grew for several days and then he did his fungi dominated tea spray where you put it in a 50 gallon drum and use and fish bubbler and molasses. It looked like it worked but I did wonder if some fungi won’t grow if there’s no roots.

I do not think fungal cultures can be induced unless the biome is ideally set up for that spices. The fungal organisms that are added will immediately need to compete with thousands of microorganisms already present in the soil. You can definitely induce fungal cultures to sterile substrate like when people grow mushrooms. If you add mushroom spores to contaminated substrate (like garden soil) it is unlikely your added culture will outcompete the thousands of already thriving cultures. It just doesn’t work that way despite what the clever marketing people tell you. Healthy plants will support the organisms that support the plant. These relations are quite specific. Fungal spores do not die in the winter. If they did you would not have mushrooms in cold areas which we do. My best suggestion is to create an environment for a healthy biome and the fungal cultures will grow. They are already there. They blow in the wind and are omnipresent except sterile environments. I really don’t think you can induce these cultures. Your plants are growing will because you are a good gardener. We really can not control what grows in the soil on a micro level from macro manipulation. I would save your money on the supplements and focus on basic horticultural basics and the mycorrhiza will take care of itself.

Quick question from a $ perspective.. Trust me I'm a garden product freak myself, or was more of one before I investigated actual lab research. And when the levels of nutrients are almost the same if not lessened in the non control groups it backed me off from spending all the money on rock dust, green sand, biochar etc etc.. Do you think that the wonderful soil and compost you have in your beds isn't sufficient enough for the results you would like ? You should try a non mykos same breed plant test at the end of the season and bring it to a lab to check out ... You might be surprised ;) ... But as for feeding organically for larger / flower production .. I'm all for that too if you can squeeze out more lbs !
