What do hedge funds think of technical analysis? Corvin Codirla, ex-hedge fund manager and independent traders comments. Do you need to be good at maths to make money trading? Why aren't economists wealthy / successful investors? Or are they? Some of them love it and some of them hate it. It also depends what you mean by technical analysis. If technical analysis means optically looking at charts and looking for patterns like head and shoulders..etc it becomes very difficult to test. If something cannot be written down in a set of rules, then it is not useful. Others will argue that technical analysis is more of an art than a science. Knowing maths doesn't necessarily make you smart.

Too much information to take trades - hit the nail on the head! I have come to realise that Fibonacci, Elliot wave and all other indicators are a waste of time and space! All you need is pure volume and volatility, from this, you have everything you need to know about the balance of power in the markets! The volatility helps find MM's (Market Manipulations) and you can trade them equally well once you understand them! My charts are clear and I can determine levels with a high degree of success. Great video in this series!

@5:10 I was with him right up until "life is about pulling the trigger, then aiming". Oy! Never give this man a fire arm! ;) At best it was a poor analogy, but I think I understand what he was trying to say. Since you don't know what will happen in the future, you should first take action, and adjust your course based on what happens after your act. I did appreciate many of his insights. ie you can succeed with an average IQ, perseverance not intelligence is a more accurate indicator/better quality for becoming rich, etc.

I won't say I am particullary intelligent, but I constantly beat myself up for almost everything and it has led me to a severe depression and suicidal fantasies. Modern age actually worsens it, you constantly see people who are much better than you at everything and this puts you in a very bad mental place of having no self-worth

I like numbers and the use of quantitative analysis. These are useful for me to build up confidence. There is a huge amount of information each day, and knowing how to screen the useful from the crabs is important. Being good at maths is an edge. Smart guys may not make big money, because they are too smart but are not persistent. If I know that my judgment is correct, but the stock prices go down and cause me losses, I would not give up too soon. When the market has undergone corrections, the prices would go up again and I would add more. Look forward, forget the past and learn lessons from the failures!

The main question I would ask him is "why do hedge funds, as a group, fail so badly to perform as well as buy-and-hold the S&P500 index?" Despite his confidence, he would simply have no good answer to that question.

I'm an Oxford graduate who work as a scientist/mathematician at a research institute. I work with a lot of very intelligent people. Judging from my friends and colleagues, I have a very different answer to why I think 'intelligent' people often aren't rich. Intelligent people realise there is more to existence than making more money than they'll need in their life. Once they reach a level of income they are happy with that suits their standard of living they don't sacrifice other parts of their life like family, free time, hobbies, sleep and happiness to pursue more money. They don't see much point in having an expensive car or drinking expensive wine or buying an expensive house. They just want to work with what keeps them interested and happy, work that feels like something worth doing on a deeper level. Not everyone *wants* to be rich.

Technical analysis works well with LTF but HTF it fails since HTF behavior depends on geopolitical issues, manipulation by market makers etc. Also technical analysis goes well with forex and gold due to large liquidity associated with it (it's harder for market makers to move it since larger amount of money is needed for manipulation). Indices, energies, stocks and other metals technical analysis has higher probability of failure, since they have a lower liquidity, more affected by underlying company performance (in case of stocks and indices) of major government decisions (in case of oil). Also in this this case a single market maker needs lesser funds to move the market. For these ones you need deeper knowledge of the economy you are dealing with.

You also have to understand that what traders do is not in any way as important as what engineers, who are changing the world, are doing. So some a lot of smart people chose to change the world instead of changing their bank account. If scientists figure out how we can colonize the universe, then their actions would have mattered a lot more than the peole trading the market would have. Being a trader is honorable hard work, but you have to understand that it is not that important! (I want to be a trader, so im not bashing trading, this is just pure logic).

I think trading is glorified gambling.. the likes of poker or BJ. 1. You need a good combination of intelect, emotion stability, and luck. 2.You feel smart when you win, but when you lose its because you are not lucky. 3. Extremely small portion gets rich by developing a working system. (Jst like counting cards) 4. Most people can profit, but cannot get rich from it. 5. Some people go broke from it. 6. its fun and addictive game with money on the line. Except if u figure out a working "counting cards" system, nobodys gonna beat u up like in the movie "21".

Many "traders" are putting together deals for a client, if they were lucky enough to get given a big client/deal they make a big pay cheque. Simple as that. They are not speculating in the markets and winning bet after bet, and their basic pay is not that great either.

Maybe if you are too smart for your own good or entrenched in your beliefs you will get caught in your own process and fail to see other things and miss opportunities. You got to have a "feel" which is impossible to quantify. The Market is a crapshoot in my opinion in the short term, but if you are playing long for 10 yrs or more and you are in an S&P 500 Index fund you will do pretty well, maybe not great, but well, especially if you do dollar-cost averaging. Individual stocks to me are also a crapshoot, even Apple or Microsoft or Amazon. You can't really be sure where those companies will be in 10 yrs +, but one of those Index funds is a much better bet and you can sleep better.

Lots of people that “think” that they’re intelligent while they actually aren’t. They suffer overconfidence bias. The only way to know if you’re actually smart is if you can truly think of all avenues and at a faster speed. If you find yourself always surprised things didn’t work out, or that people around you tend to not value your ideas, there’s a high chance you fall under this category.

Why intelligent people aren't always rich. I think it comes down to Myers Briggs types. Certain types are good starters yet poor finishers. Other types are slow and steady. Unfortunately the imagination and ideas types also tend to be the crap execution types. That's why companies usually have an ideas guy and a executive action guy and a financial guy. These all align to different types some being more about people and empathy others being about judgement others about things. Also some people would respond that whatever gets you there is intelligence. Others might add that truely intelligent people may not have a high profit motive and can find happiness with very little. They might not see the reward in chasing massive wealth. They might see the negative side as outweighing the positive. So yeah there are LOTS of variables. Ultimately for the true geniuses evaluation by anything other then their own yardstick would be pointless as we might not even comprehend their internal goals.
