I have to wild hedgehogs that comes into my garden every night. I give them chicken and cat food they absolutely love it I spent most night watching them eat .They are just brilliant 🦔

I have 2 hedgehogs visitors, though they dont get on, (much grunting if they meet) and after much experimentation I have found ther favourite food is dried dog food, the one I use most (their preferance) is Earls from Aldi they always have water available as obviously dried food is very drying, But its a readily available easy to store food and its what they chose out of probably 10 foods offered.

Beef flavour dog food or beef/fish flavour in the case of cat food is not recommended for hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs eat dog food and they can eat mushrooms to in the wild if a pet then just stick to berries anything they eat

I have so many in my garden I have to step between them push them apart and put lots of food down. Due to this I have to get everything ready as they flood my garden. Lots of plates and water.

We have just found one in our garden, it is full of flees, nothing like the cute ones in this video but it is wild and probably never touched by a human. Not sure we should touch or interfere with it at all. Any advice warmly welcomed.

Probably a lil late but if you find another one, a warm soapy bath is good for them, not much soap obviously but a little bit helps with trapped bacteria and plus the warmth usually helps them relax, don't worry about putting them in water while balled up, they can swim and have rapid survival reflexes, some people use the water reflex to get them used to being handled without being defensive.

It's really not advisable to give them any spices or flavorings, it can cause them serious gastrointestinal problems :(

Can Hegdehogs eat hamster food and vice versa? (Only as a treat) since both are omnivores and have similar nutritional requirements (hamsters needs also like 20% protein,like 15% fiber and less than 8% fat)

My visitors really like the catfood, I'll have to check the fat content, they will also go for this corn, cheese snack I dropped so they are certainly like humans in that regard, I had to carry one out in the bag. Though right now they are out hunting so they still get their wild foods. I soaked the kibble the other day and they ate that and I may do that more often to make sure they get their fluids.

I have a dog who last year had a run in with a hedge hog that lives in my back garden don't worry she came off worse with little needles in her mouth and nose, she has not bothered since, tonight i have put dog food and water also i have given it some water melon it has not eaten any but tomorrow i am going to go to the pet shop to buy some proper hedge hog food for it. I am having my garden done up and was thinking of buying it a little house to put in the garden. Do you think it will be safer for it to live indoors till the work is done? i don't want it to get hurt while the garden is being done. It is a very sweet little thing well not so little it isn't a baby. i would love some advice if any one has any as i don't know anything about hedge hogs.

@@p.j4545 There are so good websites out there to tel you what you can do. If you are getting the yard done I suggest being very careful about corners the hedgehog might be in, so no weedwacking blindly. I had one run into my house when yardwork disturbed it but the ones around here seem not to ball up as fast. If you have balling up ones they may get hurt because they do not move. So raking piles of leaves under bushes and things like that before getting in there with anything dangerous makes sense. Though I doubt they would sleep in a yard with a dog. For a normal hedgehog a house may be stressful. Mine are doing it of their free will and so they do not think of it as being trapped with strange smells, they think this is just a part of their turf I think. One is asleep in my bedroom right now. haha I actually read that some hedgehog food is not that good for them versus catfood. So I would look up if you maybe better buying some of that. Mine don't seem to eat fruit unless the kibble was gone, it's second choice food. Which is not bad because you wo7uldn't want them to eat sweet things all the time, they can get bad teeth from that. If it's dry they need extra water in the yard. Other animals will like that too, maybe put some rocks in it for the bees.

@@p.j4545 I don't think taking up the decking will be an issue at all, sounds like a nice spot for hedgehogs. He will just have to keep an eye out, also because it's possible there is a nest with babies and that cannot be disturbed at all. But if he sees that he can cover it back up. They live quite a few years so it's totally possible to have the same ones return every year. Not sure if foxes kill them, I think they'd have the same issue a dog would. We don';t have foxes or badgers around here so I think hedgehogs got more brave. I haven't seen one go after bread before but then mine liked a cheesy salty snack if I dropped any on the floor. Dogfood will have rather a lot of filler in it because dogs eat more carbs that are not as attractive to hedgehogs. Catfood is higher protein and seems very popular. That's what they feed at many rescues too. Just avoid anything with fish. The babies are fragile, once they get sick there isn't much they can do. It's very sad. I hope one of mine is having babies outside right now as they kept waking up and eating during the day which is weird, I read it can be a pregnancy symptom.

@@Iflie I will get some cat food for it and pinch a few meal worms off my daughter she has a deco and feeds it meal worms. Oh how exciting if she has some baby's. i hope your hedge hog will have lots of babys and they will have a lovely long life. please can i ask where you are in the world i am in Manchester England. Do you think if i get cat food it will not go forgoing for food or will it still go out? i don't know what i am worrying about as it has obviously taken very good care of it's self with out my help. The foxes are so nice they come looking for food around 3 in the morning seeing there is two i call them Mr & Mrs foxy locks i have names for all the animals my dog is called Pudding Pie because we all love pudding and we all love pie 😂

@@p.j4545 Oh no you can ask me anything at all. I live in the Netherlands and while some places have foxes we don't have them in town. And badgers are rare and shy and not in my province. So for many generations the hedgehogs here have only had to fear, cars, dogs and humans. So I think they may have evolved to not ball up so fast, that will have helped them avoid cars. Though they still have many victims there I can imagine the runners did better. But how they just come inside seems to be more rare in general outside of the ones around me, but I often had the backdoor open very late and drought made the hedgehogs go after catfood. Once they learned that I think they just keep coming. They always go back out for winter though and they have never stayed inside as much as this year. I listen to youtube, play movies, all the noises of human don't seem to bother them at all, they will just nap under a cupboard. Though they will freeze or run a little bit when I walk close.
