Thanks very much for this series Boyd! I used to build models with the old enamels back into the day and watching these and other videos has helped me get back up and running again. Much appreciated!

Boyd, thanks for sharing. It’s very informative series, even to those who’ve been doing this awhile. And still don’t get the desired results.

A far better option than Hobby Lobby or Walmart is to visit your locally owned hobby shop. If there's not one available in your town order online from a locally owned hobby shop that is in someone else's home town.

Looking forward to the next part. I want to upgrade to an air brush system, so some insight into what to get and what to look out for will really help me.

Loved the last video and this follow-up was great as well. A great accompaniment/help would be possibly a pdf or excel listing of starter supplies from both videos with your suggestions of brands. I am jotting things I don't have down, but I think it would be great to have suggestions and brands available to give more help and knowledge to us! Thanks again, fantastic work!!!

Fantastic video Boyd with a lot of useful information on items that are needed and advice on how to use them in order to get the best results. I have been making model kits since I was a young child and I have carried the hobby on since. Today I got my latest project the Polar Light 1/350 enterprise refit which I am looking forward to making a start on soon.

Another painting option is by Badger. They have an airgun, basically an airbrush used for general coverage that runs off of the canned air. The model number is Badger 250. While not cheap it's also not overly expensive. It runs between $20 - $30. Badger also has a spray adapter for the cans that works on the same principle. Airbrush bottle attaches to the cap which screws on the air can. Both systems are siphon feed. They aren't bad. Using one of the original versions of the airgun I was able to do a 2 tone camo on a Revell 1/32 F4-E. I decided not to do the second green for Nam camo. Paasche also has a similar system to the 250. Can run off of an air can and costs $26 at Hobby Lobby. Testors has a kit with paint and air for $35. Just offering a suggestion of when someone wants to step up from rattle cans there are reasonably priced alternatives to airbrush/compressor systems that can work for basic spray painting. Hope this is helpful and not overstepping. I respect you and your work and advice. I'm just hoping to contribute positively.

Yeah I've always gotten great results with cheap craft paint when repainting or modding 1/6 figures, and never saw the need to buy the more expensive stuff. So glad to hear it can work just as well on models.

Thank you for your video it helped me with not worrying so much about the acrylic paint I have since you use the word craft I have a ton of acrylic paint from canvas painting that I just pick up from target or wherever but I finally found a couple models for me and my 16-year-old son I haven’t done any car models since the one I did for him when he was born. I always used Testors enamel but I picked up the models at Wally world and they had little generic base color auto Testors paint set but I saw they were acrylic and I started to worry about priming is it a different type of acrylic than the types I have at home and I started becoming very confused and your video helped me not feel so overwhelmed. I subscribe to your channel to be able to go back and look at other videos you mentioned but mainly wanted to say thank you. I usually just stick to k.I.s.s. (Keep it simple stupid) but with all the information being thrown at me from the Internet I found myself easily confused as to what I needed to the point where my son and I were ready to just put the model together without any paint lol. my main question is does the color of primer affect the outcome of the colors say on the body of the car the nova we are starting with is molded in blue but we want to go with a different color possibly a color changing green/copper or two toned fluorescent Orange against a flat gray with a glitter clearcoat over top. the two-tone job Is the one I mainly wonder if different color primers matter or if gray is just fine thank you for your time

Yep I need to start using the adhesion promoter myself. I had some peel up on masking my Fireball Roberts kit as I painted the car in white primer then airbrushed the two tone white then masked off for the red. Thankfully I was able to touch it up with the white paint and a brush and get it unnoticeable. Since I will be using two part 2k clear coat I can blend it all in without it being noticeable. But for my other two tone kits I have to do going to avoid that issue to start with.

When it comes to paints I try to stay to the same brands that way if there’s any negative reactions from the paints it’s the company or my mistake I’ll use cheap primer for inside to block light even if I don’t light it it gives it a more solid look

Also , when caring for your tape rolls, try to keep the sides lint free. Putting it on a carpeted bench picks up lint that can cause bleeding. I often lay a length of tap on glass and cut new edges.

Great point, I keep my tapes hanging on my peg wall for that very reason.

Thanks again for the tips. I have been trying Krylon 2 in 1 paint primer on my Trumpeter 1/200 Titanic model. It is suppose to work on plastics. So far it is laying down very good. Had some orange peel on just a few small parts for some reason, but on the same sprue tree other parts were fine. So I just sanded them down and re-painted and things turned out great. I think Krylon is made by Duplicolor. I have some Duplicolor Paint Shop series primer in a quart that I may use on the hull since it is so large. Have you tried this lacquer prime on any models?

Question about diffrent brands of adhesion promoter available in EU: (I know this is asking a lot, time wise, so feel free to just ignore this in depth question) I have found Motip, Color-Matic and other adhesion promoters, but the best documented one is Montana. It comes in 2 varieties, Plastic and Polystyrene. The Plastic Primer is intended for Polypropylene Rubber Modified (EPDM), Acrylic Butadiene Styrene Plastics (ABS) Glass-Fibre Reinforced Plastics (GfK) Hard Polyvinyl Chloride (Hard-Pvc) Polyurethane (PUR) Polystyrene (PS) Polyamide (PA) And the Polystyrene Primer is intended for foamed polystyrene. Now my thinking is that I should go for the Plastic Primer, since it lists Polystyrene (I assume it means hard variant like kits) and that the Polystyrene Primer makes an unnecessary barrier to protect the delicate foam? Am I correct? I am building the Refit 350 and following your video, but can't get the Duplicolor variant you show. Spec Sheets for both: Plastic Primer: support.montana-cans.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021538631-PLASTIC-Primer Polystyrene Primer: support.montana-cans.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021538751-POLYSTYRENE-Primer

Are you going to go over led type stuff in a video Awesome info man
@johnblack98853 жыл бұрын
The directions on the Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter say to spray your topcoat within 10 minutes of spraying. You say to wait about 20 minutes or so until it is fully dry before priming? Just want to mske sure I’m applying this correctly before laying the primer down as I will be working with Aztec Dummy masks and want to avoid lifting off the paint.

I never would have considered using the folk art acrylics for models. I use them to brush paint little trinkets and such. But... thoughts on using them to airbrush a starship?
@TrekWorks4 жыл бұрын
I use it almost exclusively on all of my builds, starships too. It takes a little while to get used to how to spray it but it looks fantastic. It needs either a matte or gloss sealer at the end but then so does most other types of paints.
