What do I think of the Gospel of Barnabas?

It is clear that the Gospel of Barnabas contains a number of anachronisms and historical errors:
1) It has Jesus sailing across the Sea of Galilee to Nazareth which is actually inland - see chapters 20-21.
2) Jesus is said to have been born during the rule of Pontius Pilate, which began after the year AD 26 - see chapter 3.
3) Barnabas appears not to know that "Christ" and "Messiah" are synonyms, "Christ" (khristos) being a Greek translation of the word messiah (mashiach), both having the meaning of "anointed". The Gospel of Barnabas makes a major error in describing Jesus as "Jesus Christ" (lit. "Messiah Jesus" in Greek), yet claiming that 'Jesus confessed and said the truth, "I am not the Messiah"' - see chapter 42.
The Gospel of Barnabas has quotations from the Old Testament which correspond to the translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible rather than the Greek Septuagint or the Hebrew Masoretic Text. The Latin Vulgate translation was a work that Jerome began in 382 AD, centuries after the death of Barnabas.
No-one in the early centuries of the Church ever quotes from it.
Not to be confused with the Epistle of Barnabas.

I always found it odd for years that many Muslims kept saying “the Gospel of Barnabas is the real injeel” or something like that. This is why our Prophet said don’t deny the scriptures of the people of the book but also don’t believe wholeheartedly in it.

Well, aren’t Christians okay with anonymous works?? The only reason they consider Gospel of Barnabas as “fabrication” is because Jesus was saved. If Gospel of Barnabas talked about Jesus teaching Trinity and Jesus is God to be worshipped, i am sure they would not have a problem to take it as their fifth canonical gospel...

All the Gospel accounts can be traced back to the first century, that is less than 70 years after Jesus rose from the dead. In fact logically most of the books and letters in the Gospel can be shown to have been written by eye-witnesses or by people who had access to eye-witnesses between 15 and 35 years after Jesus rose from the dead. As the Gospel of Barnabas was clearly written more than 1000 years after Jesus rose from the dead it is totally irrelavant what was written in it, nobody would accept it.

@@dickyalviansyah1524 Yes the authors of the Gospel accounts did not sign the Gospel accounts. But lets face why would the early Christians not be able to remember the names of the four most important Gospel writers of that time? @Joe MD Of course we kept the our scripture Quran preserved and also we use other scripture that is the bible/torah. We are only taking the words that matches with the quran. The bible has been changed whereby the content of the bible is not purely 100% the word of God there are some but few so how do we recognise it is the word of God? The verse in the bible matches that is in the quran is the word of God. In the bible mentioned dont eat swines (Deutronomy 14:8) we also dont eat swines (Quran 2:173) and the example goes on and on. Im here not to spread hate or anything but respect to my fellow same abrahamaic faith. The oldest tradition about the discovery of the tomb of Barnabas is that a copy of the Gospel of *Matthew* was found on his chest. This was recorded by Theodore Lector around 520 CE. Nothing was said about this manuscript supposedly being the Gospel of Barnabas until much more recently. I have come across a quote repeated in various Islamic sources that says, "In the fourth year of Emperor Zeno (478 C.E. ), the remains of Barnabas were discovered and there was found on his breast a copy of the Gospel of Barnabas written by his own hand. (Acta Sanctorum Boland Junii Tom II, Pages 422 and 450. Antwerp 1698)." The problem with this claim is that when someone actually consulted the reference, it said no such thing! Acta Sanctorum says the Gospel was that of Matthew. Beware of fake news. roger-pearse. com/weblog/2018/04/27/chasing-some-fake-news-about-the-gospel-of-barnabas/

It spoke of the catastrophic events of the end in detail. There’s the time when Jesus called Peter the son of the devil and why. Something that’s in the Bible but not clear as to why. There’s a lot there does indicate that perhaps it was written by a Unitarian. Nevertheless, a very interesting book!

Interesting take, I find it very interesting in fact due to the reason you have given about how Jesus (AS) is (let us say) portrayed according to the Islamic teachings yet the author made a grave fundamental error saying he's (AS) not the Messiah. An ordinary Muslim would know that he is the Messiah actually has to believe so according to the Islamic faith. In summary, someone who knew a great deal about Jesus's (AS) life from both the Islamic and Biblical (new testament) accounts to be able to write a Gospel (a long one at that) to suit the Islamic narrative yet if he was a Muslim, he would not have made such a grave error in saying he's not the Messiah.

Those are a few parts of what God mentioned about Isa (Jesus) in Quran: - They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it seemed like that to them. (Surat An-Nisa - Verse 157) - That what God mentioned in Surat Al-Imran in the following Verses:(54) When God said, “O Isa (Jesus), I will cause you to die, and I will raise you to Me, and I will purify you from those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Judgement.” Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that wherein you differed. (55) But as for those who disbelieve, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And they have none Helpers (56) And as for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will give them their rewards in full. And God does not like the oppressors. (57) This We recite to you of the verses and the Wise book. (58) Indeed, the likeness of Jesus in the sight of God is like that of Adam. He created him from soil, then said to him, “Be,” and he is (59) The Truth from Your Lord, so do not be of those who doubt. (60) Then whoever disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge that has come to you, say, “Come, let us call upon our sons and your sons, and our women and your women.” And ourselves and yourselves, then we will pray and place the curse of God upon the liars (61). - That what God mentioned in Surat Mary: (15) And mention in the Book Maryam when she withdrew from her people to an eastern place, (16) and she took a veil from them, so We sent to her Our Spirit and it appeared to her as human being. (17) She said, “I seek refuge in the Most Gracious (one of God attributes and a name of him) from you, if you are pious.” (18) He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you a pure boy.” (19) She said, “How can I have a son when no human being has touched me, and I have not been a transgressor?” (20) He said, “Thus said your Lord, ‘He is easy for me.’ And We will certainly make him a sign for the people. he was a mercy from Us, and that was a decreed matter. (21) So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a far place. (22) Then childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date palm. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!.” (23) Then he called to it from beneath it: “Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed under you a stream of water.” (24) And shake the trunk of date palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you. (25)So eat and drink and be soothing to your eyes. Then when you see any human being, say, “Indeed, I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, and today I will not speak to any human being.” (26) So she brought him to her people carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have done something strange.” (27) O sister of Aaron, Your father was not a man who used to commit adultery, nor your mother was an unchaste woman. (28) So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to someone who is a child in the cradle? (29) He said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of God. He gave me the Scripture and made me a prophet.’ (30) And He made me blessed wherever I go.” And he enjoined upon me prayer and zakat (financial support to poor people) as long as I live (31) and was dutiful to my mother, and did not make me a wretched tyrant (32) And peace be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I will be resurrected alive. (33) That is Isa (Jesus), son of Mary. The word of truth about which they dispute. (34) It befits not (the majesty of) God that He should beget a son. Glorified be He. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is. (35) And indeed, God is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him. This is a straight path. (36) Then the parties differed from among them. So woe to those disbelievers from the sight of a great day. (37) Hear them and Beware of the Day (The Day of Resurrection) they come to Us. But the wrongdoers today are in clear error. (38)

You are doing an excellent job by digging up pertinent references and making them available to lay viewers. However, you said Barnabas was a companion of Paul, whereas he was a close disciple and companion of Jesus, long before Paul came on the scene after Jesus. He was the one who supported Paul at the Jerusalem Council when the disciples were reluctant to accept Paul in view of his past record of persecuting Jesus' followers and his innovative ideas that were opposed to Jesus' teaching. Barnabas was sidelined by Paul later and forgotten when Paul's doctrines gained supremacy in Christianity.

Thank you Paul for that concise review...... In the dawn of internet forums in the beginnings of 2000s I and many Muslims were so excited about the gospel of Barnabas and the possibility that the major churches are keeping refuting it cuz it tells the truth...... That's actually before I read more about Christianity and knowing that the concept of Gospel in Christianity (that it is nothing more than a narration of the life of the Christ according to an alleged eyewitness) that is totally different from that of Islam (a revelation to the Christ from God as revival of the teachings of the Torah and the prophets)..... I think as more and more Muslims knows about the field of textual criticism of new testament , they are becoming less enthusiastic about the gospel of Barnabas and and any apocryphal writings in old and new testaments. I myself am now convinced, although not really an expert.... just a curious person, that the text of old and new testaments are too corrupt that it is virtually impossible to redeem the original text..... And anyway the Quran has already given us this information as a reason from God to send the final prophet with the final book and make it impossible to corrupt.

*Regardless if this gospel is historical or not, I am wondering who wrote such a document? And why is its manuscript found in Italy in particular? Italy has never been an Islamic land. Also, it's worthy to notice that some of its teachings contradict Islām such as that Jesus is not the messiah.* *Was it based on an older original form, yet it got tampered with, and only the later one has reached us?*

Those are good questions. Something I would note is that the author seems quite familiar with the Christian Bible along with the traditions and customs of late Medieval Roman Catholicism and southern Europe. This suggests he was a Catholic priest or monk who had converted to Islam. In Medieval Spain, Christians and Muslims often lived together as neighbors and there was a lot of interaction between these two religious communities. My guess is that the author was residing in Spain where he came into contact with Muslims and ended up converting to Islam. This is supported by the fact that this text exists in a Spanish manuscript (in addition to the Italian one). It was very common at that time for Catholic clergymen to travel between different countries in Europe, so he may have also had some connections to Italy too. If the author was indeed a convert, then that could explain some of the contradictions with Islam. As a new Muslim, it is understandable that he still had gaps in his knowledge of Islam and was still more familiar with the teachings of Catholicism than his new religion.

Dear Paul, I have interests in comparative religion and watch your videos from time to time. I appreciate your academic way of dealing with the topics rather than using polemics. On the subject of the Gospel of Barnabas, I believe there is more truth and much deeper history to the subject than the rash conclusions given in this video or just hinging the argument on Jesus' (pbuh) denying himself as the Messiah when the Qur’an calls him so. That could actually be the argument that it was not forged by a Muslim, for a Muslim forger would not have said so and would have composed it in complete alignment with the Qur’an. Rather, what is necessary is to look at the subject holistically at a more deeper level in the context of the historical development of Christianity. And the best resource that I can point you to on that is the tafsir by Mawdudi where he extensively dealt with the topic in the commentary of Sura 61, Verse 6. Mawdudi had an impressive scholarship on the Bible and the development of Christianity as amply evident in his tafsir. He completed the work in Urdu between 1940s and 1960s long before the Gospel of Barnabas resurfaced and came to be known among Muslims. An objective review of his arguments would leave one, I believe, with good reasons to assign credibility to the Gospel of Barnabas. His tafsir, originally in Urdu under the name “Tafhimul Qur’an”, has been translated by the Islamic Foundation in UK as “Towards Understanding the Qur’an”. You can also access it online at www.islamicstudies.info/tafheem.php?sura=61&verse=1&to=14 (this link is bookmarked to sura 61). Thank you.

I won't dismiss this book as a forgery right away. I've read it and there was a lot of things it that made sense and seemed very truthful. It could be that this book was compiled together from several other books that were found by some one at the time and new no better. That's were the mistakes probably came in. That person probably did his best to make several books into one, but didn't do a perfect job at it. The part where he denies being the messiah and claims that the prophet Mohammed is the messiah has a significant meaning behind it. What he is saying is that is is a lesser messiah than the prophet Mohammed. Because messiah and seal of the prophets mean the same. Let me explain. Many people in the Christian world are let to believe that messiah means annointed. The real meaning is final or done. I will give an example: messiah is a semitic word meaning to wipe. When you finish eating, you wipe your hands, when you finish working you wipe your hands meaning your done. So, we all know that Jesus was the last prophet from the children of Israel, so the title of messiah would be the most appropriate for his position. No more will be born as prophets from the children of Israel after him. However, there will be one more born from the children of Ismail who is a greater messiah than he is and that is the prophet Mohammed who is the last and final prophet to the whole world. The seal of the prophets. Now we conclude, messiah means done and seal means done. One being the last to Israel and the final being the last to the world.

We as Muslims, should not seek validation of our religion from dubious biblical sources, when even our prophet peace be upon him said to neither believe or disbelieve the compromised gospels. We have the Quran and the Sunna , that is sufficient to establish with force of text and logic any theological point.

Gospel of barnabas makes sense in many ways...first if we look at what 'Jesus/judas' says in the bible "my God, my God why have thou forsaken me?' It makes sense becos Allah says that it was made to appear that judas looked like Jesus. What doesnt make sense is that why does Jesus make such a statement? He apparently new what would happen to him...becos the 3 is 1 and the 1 is3...with all respect. AND why call on God if Jesus is God? BUT in context of Barnabas... Btw no other copy of this is known except whats in the popes library....it should be easy to verify the age and also its origin... Most astoundingly why did the pontive keep it ? Its called heretic...and those kind of documents was normally destroyed....i think paul that should reconsider....nb the italian monk that translated it was invited to the pope as a pious guest....and he became muslim after reading it....food for serious thought i would say. The errors you talk about could have occured by the raggs because they were biased and also translated it far from reference books and while travelling

@photios4779
@photios4779 3 жыл бұрын
No. That story does not come from the canonical Bible used by Christians. But there is a text called the Syriac Infancy Gospel (which also exists in Arabic translation) that says: "Jesus spoke, and, indeed, when He was lying in His cradle said to Mary His mother: I am Jesus, the Son of God, the Logos, whom thou hast brought forth, as the Angel Gabriel announced to thee; and my Father has sent me for the salvation of the world." You can find more information about the Syriac Infancy Gospel by consulting the Wikipedia article by that name, but the important thing to know is that Christians (and biblical scholars) do not accept it as a reliable source of information about the historical Jesus. It has never been a part of any Christian Bible. The Syriac Infancy Gospel contains a lot of material that seems legendary or mythical, such as a diaper of the infant Jesus being able to heal sick people.

@@photios4779 Those are a few parts of what God mentioned about Isa (Jesus) in Quran: - They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it seemed like that to them. (38)

Dear brothers and sisters, the Bible as it is, the historical reality of it's contents, the reality of Paul, the history of Jerusalem up until 70-135 AD and the rediscovered significance of James and his preaching should be enough to point any sane person towards the reality of The Son of Mary and its near perfect correlation with the Qur'anic account. You don't need any "hidden" or "forgotten" Gospels. The signs of Allah are so clear that only denial makes the unseen. And may Allah grant brother Paul steadfastness in his religion, increase his knowledge and make him an accepted teacher for us !

It's hard to take this Gospel account seriously; as was mentioned there are a number of errors and anachronisms, as well as geographical mistakes that a 1st-century Jew would never make. I think even the paper the original Gospel was printed on was carbon-dated to the late 16th- early 17th century; almost certainly a forgery then - however, I have read it, and it makes for an interesting read if nothing else. A nice synopsis and breakdown of this highly controversial, contested, and disputed Gospel. Thanks for uploading.
