The Gospel of Judas caused a huge stir when National Geographic published it back in 2006. But to this day, misconceptions about this text abound. Who wrote this text? And what does it really say?

Have you ever heard of hesychasm or the noetic prayer ? Advanced practice leads to a state of illumination and glorification where one becomes constantly aware of Gods uncreated light. A state of ecstasy. Some people who have attained this practice, when they pass, their bodies don't decay normally, sometimes for decades. These holy relics even have a beautiful smell to them and one can feel them radiating. Please could you make us a video on your experiences with this practice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpaXgKekha96ptE

I've recently found your channel and have subscribed after watching several of your presentations. It's so nice to see a presentation about religions that's purely academic and not biased toward any of them. I've loved to study religions myself as a hobby. However, without enrolling in a good college-level theology or divinity class, I've found it difficult to find material that's not either skewed toward or against religion(s) to just study them. Keep up the great work. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you.

I suggest strongly that you buy the COMPANION BIBLE. Scripture, using hermeneutics (one of my hobbies for the past 20 years) by E.W. Bullinger and completed by Moffit, includes appendices that truly details the many misinterpretations that various religions have used to control congregations for selfish reasons rather than preaching the TRUTH. This is often the fault of preachers and seminary faculty who refuse to question what they have been taught. Reading the COMPANION Bible will help anyone with an open mind and true desire to learn will allow the reader or student to actually make sense of Scripture without bias to any particular denomination or sect.

You can use a Strong’s Bible Concordance to translate find the correct translations yourself. There’s even a Concordance Bible called the Interlinear Bible to help. It’s been extremely helpful to me in understanding the Word much better. So many people miss the importance of the fact that the people of the Bible are Hebrew and there are cultural and language barriers that muddy the context of Scripture, as you said. The Bible can’t be separated from the very people it’s about, but let most Christians tell it’s not an issue to do that.

The three oldest none bible texts that mentions Yeshua (or rather at this time Jesus) are pretty weak on the truth of the matter but good enough to say that there where a Yeshua. As for Judas there is nothing on him. That Yeshua was betrayed doesn't sound out of this realm but that is was Judas has no proof outside of the hebrew text. Not entirely. Jesus never told Judas to betray him. what Bible are you reading? Judas in front of the chief priests said, "I have sinned by betraying an innocent man to death." It seemed like Judas was surprised Jesus was actually condemned to death. So perhaps Judas thought Jesus would get out of it and he would get the money. So Judas's sin was not just betraying Jesus Christ, we could say that he had a role to play and he did it, but his sin was greed.

+Johan Bester --- you have misunderstood my comment. My point is that modern Christianity and the current editing of the bible DOES portray Judas as a simplistic straw-man character, set up to be a punching bag for Christians. What I'm pointing out, however, is gnostic texts portray a more complicated, important relationship. Specifically, the Gnostic Gospel of Judas imply Jesus and Judas planned the betrayal beforehand... together... as a means of enlightening mankind. This debate did exist prior to the discovery of the Gnostic text. People have argued Judas was/is the first to be forgiven. Further, the kiss of Judas during the 'betrayal' was not meant as an evil gesture, but as an act of devotion. Judas identified Jesus so that Jesus could fulfill his role, in doing so he fulfilled his own role. Judas also offered to return the money, implying there was no personal gain. Apart from the 'death' scenes in some books, Judas is portrayed much more blandly and benignly than is often taught by modern Christians. Also, it has been argued, somewhat convincingly I would say, Jesus' character is portrayed in such a way throughout that Judas was meant to be forgiven, or even pitied. That is, we are not meant to believe the son of God would hold a grudge or want us to do so... that LITERALLY defeats the purpose of the religion.

I’ve read the gospel of Judas multiple times. As a former Catholic I can safely say that the text certainly appears to show Judas as being someone extremely special to Jesus. He might not of been his “best“ friend, but he clearly is his number one pupil. The mission that he gives Judas is of the utmost importance in fulfilling his destiny which is something the others are portrayed as not understanding. The “13th demon” comment might be more of a reference to the apostles who it sounds like are trifling to Jesus at times. Jesus calling Judas the 13th may be a nod to him as being special as opposed to being a traitor.

This actually has some really neat parallels with Islamic notions of Satan (Iblis) and especially the interpretation of Ibn ʿArabī. The Islamic rebellion narrative casts Satan as the foremost lover of God. When God demands that he bow to humanity, he is stuck with the impossible choice of either disrespecting God by bowing to something lesser than God or disobeying God. Because he is the true lover of God, he chooses disobedience, because it is better to suffer separation from the beloved than to dishonour him. Even so, Satan leads us towards God from heaven. All love is a reflection of divine love, and so our petty, sinful loves are just an indirect love of God. Satan leads us towards those petty loves and so towards love of God. Ultimately, Satan will be rewarded for his enduring faith, love, and hard work and will be honoured when the judgement comes. As for my interpretation of the Christian role of Judas, I see it a lot like how I see the temptation. Jesus is incorruptible. He can't be tempted. But he knows that temptation is an important part of our journey towards salvation, so he goes through temptations as a model for us even though he can't really be tempted. Likewise, he understands that we can only really be inspired to action when we lose something. He is eternal and all-loving and can't really lose anything, but he needs to show us what the path to righteousness looks like, so he (according to the canon) allows or (according to GoJ) requests that Judas betray him so that we can see how his great power and our salvation come out of loss, betrayal, and suffering. The reason why he couldn't have gone to the soldiers or even just crucified himself is that action comes from external loss and betrayal.

Maybe he was tempted! And for Jesus to give his life was a test from Satan to Jesus, to see, if he can really sacrifice himself. So Satan entered into him or maybe it can be just in a sense that Judas was not a good man. So, after Satan was out of him, or after he realized he actively contributed in killing the Honest, Just, Good and Righteous and God's Man, and God's son, (and maybe God, because we don't know what he experience and learned about Jesus being with Him) he was with he knew, Judas couldn't take this... So he committed suicide...

@@kaptenlemper "Protecting their Prophet"? Jesus never intended to live a long human life on earth. He completed the teaching parts, and the dying part was the pre-planned end to accomplish restitution to infinite God. Jesus stated this clearly way before. The apostles were allowed to experience their panicked abandonment of Jesus to teach them they were still human. Some swell hardheadedness had been growing because they were THE disciples of popular Jesus. While they would become future leaders, they needed the humbling experience of their human weakness to prevent pride of office from distorting their future delivery of Jesus' teaching.

“Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness,” biblehub.com/genesis/1-26.htm One of the problems of English bibles are that they translate lots of different names to either “God” or “Lord”. Go to the bottom of the page to the Lexicon and see that “God” is actually the word Elohim, a masculine plural, and “Let Us make” na-a-seh is also plural. In the following examples I have included the original text names for God in brackets. A little history lesson. The Canaanite culture grew up in situ as agriculture and crop cultivation developed starting around 6200 BCE. The first references to “Canaan” are around 2500 BCE. There was extensive communication between the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten and the Canaanites in 1350 BCE as well as a considerable amount of other ur text documents and inscriptions until the Canaanite civilization collapsed around 1206-1150 BCE. The name of the head god of the Canaanites was El. Unfortunately, they seem to have started the trend of using the name of their head god as the generic name for all gods and then identifying the head god with attributes. Elohim is the Canaanite plural of god, for their pantheon of gods, the 70 sons of El and Asherah, the mother goddess. Asherah bore him 70 sons. These sons married human women which gave rise to the first kings. This belief predates the Israelites by many centuries. You can see this belief reflected in Genesis 6:1-4. "Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God (Elohim) saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose. So the LORD (Yahweh) said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and afterward as well, when the sons of God (Elohim) had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown." biblehub.com/bsb/genesis/6.htm In Deuteronomy 32:8-9 we have “When the El-yo-wn (El the most high, notice singular) gave the nations their inheritance, when He (singular) divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. But the Lord’s (Yahweh’s) portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance.” biblehub.com/bsb/deuteronomy/32.htm Many English translations use the Masoretic Text from the 10th century CE version of the Old Testament with the line “When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.” using “sons of Israel” to erase the polytheistic connotations. The oldest Greek texts either use “sons of God” or “angels of God”. The DSS uses “sons of God”. biblehub.com/deuteronomy/32-8.htm So basically El divided the humans into groups, one for each of his sons and kept Jacob’s people as his own. In Job there is the line “Now there was a day when the sons of God (Elohim) came to present themselves before the LORD (Yahweh), and Satan also came among them.” biblehub.com/job/1-6.htm That would have to be the 70 sons of El and Asherah and apparently Satan was not one of their sons. In fact 70 is quite common in the Bible. You can add to the list in this crappy link that the Gospel of John added an additional 70 disciples to the original 12 from the Synoptic Gospels. www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/meaning-of-numbers-in-bible/70.html Although most Christian scholars dismiss the plural associations as just being the royal “We” or referencing the Holy Trinity, they are just trying to deny the polytheistic source of the Israelite god. The idea of the “Holy Trinity” was an idea concocted in the 4th century CE by the Catholic Church. The writers of the Pentateuch were an offshoot of the Canaanites and the lines are leftover from their Canaanite beliefs. Polytheism was normal and accepted until around mid-seventh century BCE when the worship of Yahweh alone was established and not until the Maccabees in the 2nd century BCE that it became universal. Asherah was represented by a tree or grove and as a carved pole and is referenced as “The Queen of Heaven” in Jeremiah 7:16-18. biblehub.com/bsb/jeremiah/7.htm In 2 Kings 23 Josiah removed the carved pole of Asherah from House of Yahweh and burned it. Asherah is mentioned a number of times in the Bible, the Greek translations used the word “grove” instead in an attempt to erase her memory. Many Bible translations still continue to use “grove”. biblehub.com/bsb/2_kings/23.htm
