"sometimes I want to hug my good friends", that made me feel so sad for japanese people, now I understand a bit better why depression hits so hard there, that code of not being able to express your opinion without anxiety or the distance you have even with your friends. Nice video, greetings from Chile :)

i’ve seen so many videos like this and wish young japanese people would just take the initiative to be less strict around eachother, they have very outdated social structures that restrict freedom yet they refuse to because at the core of it it would go against everything they’ve ever learned up to that point, I hope one day groups in japan try to rebel against these social norms as it’s very much in their power

Watched a couple of your videos and you're definitely one of my favorite Japanese interviewers I've seen. The interviews feel very natural, you ask good questions and you seem very friendly. It's a nice mix of relaxing and interesting that I really haven't found on similar YT channels. Keep it up and you'll have many views and subscribers in no time.

When I got drunk in a bar (several visits and we got to "know" each other and tried to have conversations) I was really happy to see a bartender again and hugged him spontaneously. Everyone laughed, but it was a good laugh I think.... I hope. ''' Orz . I had no idea friends dont hug ! I must have been weird, thank you for the insights. I would like to understand more about open spaces though. It seems a lot of spaces where I thought "this is public I can make a foto for memory" where quite private and I apparently angered some shinto priests in the process, which I am still very sorry for . It's a difficult topic to understand.

I was just there in Japan for 2 weeks for the very first time and solo! and i must say, Japanese people are amazingly nice and helpful and very hospitable towards others, especially to foreigners like me! and yes, Japanese people are very shy! i tried to have a small talk with some of them, but, it seems they were not comfortable at all with it, so i tried to give them some space. Hopefully, next time i visit I get a chance to enjoy some talks with the locals! would love to learn more about Japan and it's cultures without making them feel really uncomfortable. Otherwise, my 1st trip to Japan was amazingly great! can't wait to go back there! P.s. Great video! keep it up! ❤

Agreed. Talked with a beautiful bartender and she confessed to be "fat". She was like 1.70 or bigger and barely weight around 50 kilo or so , super light weight imho and definitely a looker. She seemed to endure a lot of unnecessary stress under her smile. It would be sad to see them "americanized" in size though.

Let me explain. Believe it or not…many Japanese girls who are as thin as this girl call themselves “fat”. Japanese people think that it’s natural to be manipulated by media. Girls think they HAVE TO be skinny. They always complain about they have to be skinny because media, guys and so on give them pressure. They don’t think that they have right to decide what kind of body they have. If you were asked by a Japanese girl “Is it true that foreign guys think that Japanese girls aren’t attractive because we are too skinny? ”, can you guess what she wants you to say❓ If you wanted that girl to like you, you had better say Yes. Many Japanese girls want to believe that Japanese media, people and so on force them to be skinny and it’s different in other countries. I’m very tall for a Japanese woman(173cm…5’8”?). I weigh 48kg(105lbs). I can’t gain weight however I eat and do know my grotesquely skinny body isn’t beautiful at all. When I was living in America, I was surprised that nobody told me to eat a lot despite there are more thick people. They understand I can’t gain weight however I eat. Why don’t Japanese people believe that I eat a lot despite I do in front of them?…They believe all women want to be skinny. Many of them don’t know how to respect individual. Several hundreds Japanese guys have told me “I know why you are so skinny. You think guys like skinny women. I don’t, you are too skinny. Eat a lot”…MANY JAPANESE WOMEN GET GLAD TO HEAR THAT I’M UNATTRACTIVE BECAUSE I’M TOO SKINNY. That’s why I’ve never dated with a Japanese guy for more than 10 years(Though some Japanese guys don’t criticize my body, being accused uncountable times makes me scared of hanging around with Japanese people. As a result, I haven’t dated a Japanese guy for a long time). Japanese women say 〝Really, you have a foreign boyfriend❓ I’m sad because I heard foreign guys don’t like a skinny woman❗️ I thought they like デブ(fat) like me😭〟. But they are as thin as girls in this video.

@@t.k.5972 Did she say her height was 1.70 and weight was 50kg❓ If she was so skinny, she must want to gain weight but be accused by many Japanese people who don’t believe she does. They must tell her to eat a lot. Though I don’t have any friends who are both as tall as me and as skinny as me, I have some who are as skinny as me but shorter. All of them are tired of being told to eat a lot by people who don’t believe that they want to gain weight but they can’t. Though it depends…most Japanese women whose height is 1.70 want to be shorter. I admit that this country has terrible lookism. People here try hard to look better. But not all women want to lose weight to look better. Problem here is, people blindly believe that all people are same as them because of strong group thinking. Don’t that bartender weigh more❓ I have acquaintance 1.70cm/55kg and she wants to gain weight.

@@noripee8278 Those were her rough units that I remember ( I was drinking after all ), maybe it was 55 kg, for me both is thin enough - I dont even remember fat people except ONE person. To be honest if she would not have been in a relationship I'd have tried to ask her for a dinner immediately, in my eyes she is gorgeous and has an interesting personality. Yes being in japan really humbled me to see so much effort in looking good and I think about changing things about myself now after feeling that pressure and impression, but I guess all comes with a pricetag, the opposite of "lookism" as well. I wish here some women (and a lot of men) would put a bit more effort in being cute or just neat looking and being polite instead of being furious. Maybe "grass is always greener on the other side". I used to be skinny too and got a lot of weight in order to escape judgement, now the weight gets noticed, or something else (too tall, too bald , too formal, whatever). I guess "hammering in the nail that stands out" is a common thing in societies to various degrees and sometimes people hide envy through nitpicking others too.

Here in the west people say what they think in literally everything to the point that giving an opinion sounds like an act of confrontation and debates or arguments. I think it's best to balance this a bit. I might not agree with what someone says but It is best not to try and correct the person or to confront their thinking, it's best to accept their way of thinking while maintaining your position as well.

1:45 The girl wants to go home if there is nothing to do at work? In some jobs you can do, but mostly, when you are your own boss. I never had a job in Germany, where I was allowed to leave just as I please, even when there was no work. There could be a telephone call anytime - from a customer or from the boss to see if you are still on duty. I hate when shops do close arbitrarily just because the actual vendor staff doesn't want to hold their place any longer.

I like everything about Japan except for its food culture, I think Japan food is good in general but it's a bit too boring because they stick to tradition unlike Thailand or south-korea you can see the new food creation there is very aggressive fusion food creation etc. and also its serving Japanese serving is a bit to little for me... even foreign food in Japan is based in original that's why its kinda boring.... I hope I can see more new food creation food fusion in Japan😊....

The young lady on the park bench spoke with sincerity I think. However, in the West where people express their feelings it has mutated into everyone feels their opinion and feelings is "NUMBER 1" and it is oppressive in a different way to being unable to express frustration. I guess a constructive way to express frustration may be the solution, but expressing it is no guarantee of solving it or avoiding other frustrations emerging, imho. As to chatting in restaurants, I feel in the West the customer service is really bad quality and the staff are really disrespectful in many restaurants being condescending, inattentive or over-familiar and rude. Otherwise a lot of staff are migrants on a low wage and clearly don't care about the job and it comes out in the poor service in the restaurants. When I was in Japan I honestly loved the high quality service and respectful, peaceful atmosphere in public. It was a much higher standard and higher quality experience in my opinion. The only restaurants I like to eat out in the West are family-run small restaurants where it feels personal and where the service feels meaningful, otherwise it feels horrible in a lot of places. The next 2 ladies, one of them on the left suggested being over-weight was a form of self-expression. Being over-weight is not a good thing. It comes from the fact the school systems don't train and educate the young to eat nutritionally and exercise to maintain their fitness early on so that as adults they have good habits and maintain their health and appearance. The children in the West spend from about 4-16 at least if not 4-18 at school and still come out of that system with lots of variability in health. It is unfortunate and a lot of money is spent on promoting sports to reduce it but there's a clear lack of coordination to be successful. I watched a documentary of Japanese kindergarten children and the way they do their meals and it seemed a beneficial system for eating healthily? I don't know what sort of exercises they train the children to perform to keep fit but I would be interested in learning that.

This blanket statement doesn't work. I find the customer service to be great on the whole where I live. With a lot of competition amongst all the restaurants in an area staff being condescending to customers is rare. They can make a lot more money if they are courteous than would be the case if they are condescending. If staff at a restaurant is condescending people will simply complain about their experience and stop going there. Then it will go out of business. People come with a variety of personalities. As restaurant employees as long as they fulfill their duties to me as customer I'm good with a wide range of approaches for interaction from reserved to chatty. That's more interesting to me than would be the case if they all had to take the same approach.

@@brianh6 Fair enough if you report your experience around where you live. I accept the veracity of your statements. However, I report the various restaurants I went to from super deluxe to chain restaurants and more and on the whole I never experienced the correct etiquette from staff but a lot of negative and condescending behaviour. I even had one Eastern European staff become really pissed off because there was no tip! In Japan, the staff were exemplary in their conduct and manners. It was wonderful high quality service. I know in the US the waiters EXPECT TO BE TIPPED but then I see they work for that and it's all plastic smiles. Whereas in Japan I had the feeling the staff worked PROFESSIONALLY because that was the right attitude. As with you, I can only report my own experiences and on the whole I never like eating out in the West because of the poor behaviour of the service industry I have experienced.
