In Finland we usually just make Valentines Day cards to close friends and sometimes go to cafe or movie with them. It's not so romantic up here, in finnish it's "Ystävänpäivä=Friend's day", so it's more like celebration for friendships.

When I was in school, the student council would create a valentine mailbox where you could drop your valentine's letters, then they would deliver them to the corresponding student, in the middle of classes, in front of everyone. It was kinda cute and sad because there would be people getting a toooooon of letters, and others none at all xD

I just came back from japan on the 14th (which ended up being the 13th here in California) so I was able to witness the amount of valentine chocolate being sold in stores as well as the basement level of department stores like Takashimaya. I bought a box (3000¥) for my mom for valentines...the woman had that look like “why is he, a boy, buying these?” Lol but was nice and took my order. It was so packed full of girls buying chocolate candy, cookies etc. lol interesting to say the least.

First, in Brazil the Valentine's day is 12 July, cause February the weather is hot like hell, and you can't be romantic sweating like a wild pig. Second, Valentin's day in Brazil seem to become only an excuse to sell condoms. I bet St. Valentin would be ashammed.

Seems to me the addition of "friendship chocolate" makes their Valentines activity pointless. The last two girls went to the trouble of making the chocolate but because friendship chocolate is so ubiquitous whoever they give their romantic chocolates just took it as friendship too. They may as well not have bothered and saved themselves time, money and effort.

They have very high expectations for men. Families also interfere with relationships. While cultures vary, women can be universal. But I wish you good luck anyway. I''m a western woman, but I think wherever you go, you should have someone who cares about you and not let culture or race paint an idealistic picture to the point it makes you deviate from that standard.

@@KingsRight It is most likely reffering to Giri(friendship/obligatory) chocolate in corporation culture. It is said men spend 3 times more for return on white days, this does not apply students. So if you get $10 chocolate from 10 female colleagues, you have to spend $300 on white day. It is not really widely held standard, just joke men tend to be expected to give expensive return.

Valentine's day in the Netherlands, I really wouldn't know to be honest. Never gotten something and never really bothered either, I was bullied so much that I didn't really have the time to think about things like that. I know there is Chocolate and flowers being given, I know of people who go on a date with their loved ones. But aside from that, no idea.

@@TheDragonfriday I agree and disagree at the same time. I agree that this is a scam because it's waaaay to expensive. But I disagree about "the idea is so popular". The ring is a symbol of relationship. You are buying it only once in your life (at least that is the idea. The idea doesn't involve divorces). Anyway... If a woman is normal and not materialistic, you can choose something cheaper. Then spend rest of money on other things. In my opinion if woman will look at you with contempt, because you want to give her a cheaper ring and not something with pure gold or huge diamond, she is not worth it and you are wasting your time with her. That means she loves your money and doesn't care about you. If you will be ill or broke, she will not support but she will leave. I think that it's stupid idea to buy an very expensive rings if you are not a really rich couple. You can always show your love in other ways, in everyday life... and it will not cost you a single $, € or whatever 🙂

Valentines Day in the United States is an excuse for women to compare their men. Nothing More Nothing Less. I used to rather enjoy spoiling women and I still do from time to time, the difference being that I will never nor have I ever celebrated Valentines Day with any Female. I may enjoy doing things like that of my own free will, but once someone expects me to do so out of some weird social obligation instead of my own want it becomes a pointless endeavor to me. If you need a once a year reminder to spoil and treat your significant other well then you probably shouldn't be in that relationship to begin with. Last girl I dated that blew up on me over it got laughed at, and so I asked her if she wanted to be Treated Well Consistently throughout the Year like she was, or Spoiled Once a Year and neglected like most girls I know who brag about what they got for Valentines Day? Weird how fast her outlook changed.

Valentine day in Hungary is like "Lovers day". Boys gives roses and chocolate or plush animal to his girlfriend and the couples spend their day together and go to cinema or restaurant or do something special. Over here (somewhere in Europe) the V day is only for couples so singles can take it easy. Usually a boquet and a dinner or something similar, band concert, ... Though it's a day when boys have to man up, first challenge is usually whether you even now the day has come ;-).

I'm not sure if it's because I went to an all girls' school but when I was in school, I had to make or buy chocolate related desserts every year for my friends, seniors, juniors and teachers. Yeah, that was a lot, but no pressure. Girls like sweet, cute and simple things. In return, I'd get a ton of chocolates from them back(especially from juniors) so rather than a romantic thing, it was like sweet exchanging day for me lol Even now at work, I give cookies or chocolate chips to my co workers every year. I only change the shape of the chocolate for my bf every year lol He prefers spending time together rather than sweets lol

Everyone spends it differently here in U.S. But usually a man will buy a red rose or red flowers as the color red is the color for love. Also we buy chocolates and stuff. Then its spend time with them and go out or whatnot. Its usually like that.
