Just wanted to say something.. Kimchi in Chinese is often referred to as Han guo pao cai 韩国泡菜, it literally means Korean Kimchi.. The Korean is added to distinguish it from Chinese Paocai. I don't know wtf is going on, but things going around on social media and the internet have been seriously distorted... PAOCAI literally means fermented vegetables, so paocai does NOT equal to Kimichi. No one, literally No one I know around me, thinks Kimchi is Chinese. Still, we do have our own paocai (different types of fermented vegetables). I hope this explains the confusion... >< And again, people I know (people I have met and talked to) know hanbok is Korean, and no one claims it to be Chinese. Cultural exchanges and influences have existed between the two, since hundreds of years ago Joseon and Chinese Dynasties have maintained a kinda good relationship. The traditional Han ethnic clothing, 'Hanfu', is not hanbok. The two does share similarities when you first see it, but its actually quite different, and if you search up some Hanfu from Ming dystnasty you will know thats how it looked like hundreads of years ago. Social media and the internet made it convenient for information to be shared and exchanged, but also created convenience for misinformation...

As a Chinese student now studies in S.Korea, I am shocked that I can see news about China every day, negative news. Some interviewed Korean people said that people in China are nice, I would tell you the simple reason is that our government shields the news from the outside world (mostly negative news), so we only focus on ourselves and learn the positive things from another country, but also we adapted it for our country, I don't think BTL is good for us, since our value is different. I have to mention Hanfu (not hanbok) is our traditional clothes and Paocai is only some local food in China, it cannot be the main dish as it is in Korean culture (including North Korea and Korean-Chinese places in China). Speaking of food, the way to make food cannot be a patent. In the thousand years of history of China, making kimchi is not a weird thing, we also use a similar way for bamboo and green beans. I cannot understand why you guys care so much about it. Also, I have to say, people in South Korea cannot stand for all the Koreans, you guys are only the Koreans living in the southern part of this biland. For more views about China from the Korean community, you have to go to Koreans living in North Korea and the Korean-Chinese regions. please don't let some people stand for the whole community, just like Mongolia cannot stand for all the Mongolia people since there are inner Mongolia people who are living in China.

However, during the chaos until 1951 that PLA recaptured it, Tibet was a more like a separatist regime controlled by British, even they called themselves “independent ”. I bet none of you ever heard of the “imperial edict of the abdication of the Qing Emperor” and this side of the story. A lot of Asian countries have a negative sentiment of China. Think about how the Chinese gov't has acted towards a lot of nations including Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, HK, Malaysia, and the Phillippines. A lot of this is based on the South China Sea, unfair trade agreements, and China's imperialist actions. The whole COVID19 issue was the icing on the cake. We're honestly getting sick of the way the Chinese gov't behaves.
@octavia74083 жыл бұрын
@@justinlook3531 The whole South China Sea issue is something that is completely misunderstood and has turned into this propaganda topic to fuel more hate towards China. I am Filipino who held a very negative view towards China barely a year ago until I started learning about their history I understand more their position. China's position is reactionary towards the imperialism of the west, read about the century of humiliation for China and how they were forced to give up Macau, Hongkong etc. and you will understand more why they have their position now. They have learned that they are very vulnerable in the sea and tries to secure it or have a more decisive presence. Now remove China in the picture and Taiwan, Vietnam and my country Philippines are still contesting the same waters. My country right now is taking a more diplomatic stance on the issue and emphasized on joint collaboration and sharing. The only problem is that the US has a lot of military bases in Asia and they use this to flex towards China. This is aggravating China and they are flexing back showing that they aren't the China 100 years ago that was just stepped around. They also don't want to give up Taiwan, giving up Taiwan is allowing the US to have a stronger hold in the area. Imagine if China has bases in Cuba, Haiti or the coast of California, that is what China feels in the South China Sea with US naval presence.
@octavia74083 жыл бұрын
@@justinlook3531 China doesn't have a history of Imperialism, unlike the west. Actually, China was raided with lots of pirates from possibly the Philippines or Indonesia some 1000 years ago. Because they have records, we have a bit of our history recorded by them. China has traded with other kingdoms of Southeast Asia for thousands of years. They never subjugated them unlike Spain, Dutch, British, French, Americans who came and colonized our lands. Now that China is a growing power, the west headed by the US is doing every tactic it has to stain China. Sure, China isn't perfect but the west definitely isn't either. Much of the negative narrative comes from CIA backed by the US military industry as they try to manufacture consent of the people so the people will support them for their new war using Taiwan as a catalyst or if not war, to sell weapons as they did to Australia. You can't sell weapons if you can't establish an enemy. You don't have to look far in history to know that they did the same thing to Iraq and Afghanistan.

@@octavia7408 I completely understand what you are talking about and I have tons of criticism of the West's imperialism. But trying to say that china outright owns the territory and installing military forces in the regions against the established agreements is a whole different story. Why is it that Vietnam was open to western military help last year? It's because China kept expanding its military forces. Please don't excuse China's horrible behavior. Actions speak louder than words and China's actions have been horrible. We Asians should be able to share the region and come up to an agreement but we can't do that if China keeps acting the way they do.

Why Chinese claim kimchi as theres is different to why Koreans think China claims kimchi as theirs. 2 points here. 1) Kimchi literally means "soaked/fermented vegetables". It doesnt just mean the red chilli cabbage fermented vegetable dish we all know of. Kimchi is an umbrella term. Theres like 200 different types of kimchi in Korea. Paocai also literally means "soaked/fermented vegetables". Also hundreds if not thousand of different types of paocai in China. The method of "fermenting vegetables" in the region originated from China. That is why China claims "fermenting vegetables" aka kimchi/paocai as theirs. 2) Koreans claim kimchi originated from the 3 kingdom periods. Most of Goguryeo, the largest of the 3 Korean kingdom is located in modern day NE China. There are also Koreans native to NE China. Anything within Chinas borders today is "Chinese", including those native ethnic Koreans. Theyre Chinese citizens. Therefore, "kimchi" is also Chinese (not to say its not also Koreans). Koreans are native to 3 countries afterall, SK, NK, and NE China.

Many Westerners tend to judge East Asian countries based on their own biases, without considering the unique cultural and historical contexts of each country. For instance, the dynamic between Canada and France differs greatly from that of Korea and China, and the relationships between Canadians and french, as well as between Koreans and Chinese, are also distinct. Korea's resentment towards China bears similarities to its resentment towards Japan, stemming from historical conflicts of victimhood and perpetration. Therefore, labeling such sentiments as 'racism' only demonstrates a limited understanding of the complexities involved.

Very good reporting. The interviews with passersby give an idea of what the public really thinks. The final conclusion is that people are usually influenced by reports that affect their impression of a country. And these reports are offen biased. In addition, as a young generation, I think it is a misunderstanding ,Koreans says that "on social networks, Chinese people say kimchi and hanbok are Chinese". It's all because of the language translation problem. When we translate kimchi into Chinese, we translate it into "Korean paocai" In Sichuan, China, there is also a pickled food called "pao cai" in Chinese. For all Chinese people, we all know the difference. And we don't think that Korean kimchi is Chinese. It's a total misconception.

Between Singapore and Malaysia, we sometimes argue pettily whether a delicious local dish "laksa" cooked in curry and rich coconut milk originates in Singapore or Malaysia. Between Malaysia and Indonesia, there have been foolish disputes whether a well-loved folk song "Rasa Sayang" originates in Malaysia or Indonesia. I think human beings everywhere are the same. There is a foolish element or even a dark side in all human nature that we must guard against.
The Chinese government had no interest in Korean culture until 2007, but in the 2010s it started stealing Korean culture. They have stolen Taekwondo, Hanbok, Kimchi and etc Korean cultures in the last decade.

It's different when one country (China) has no freedom of speech, is authoritarian and controls the state media. That's the real problem - CCP manipulating the Chinese people to antagonise it's neighbours by spreading lies to create a common enemy, and keep the Chinese people united, to stay in power. Common tactic used by dictatorships.

@@isolvechess1941 Why Chinese claim kimchi as theres is different to why Koreans think China claims kimchi as theirs. Koreans are native to 3 countries afterall, SK, NK, and NE of China.

We people want to have a good relationship with South Korea because we have similar culture and race and a good relationship in history more than thousands of years, like South Korea and the USA today. The Chinese government will not make that trouble with South Korea if South Korea were a neutral country like Switzerland. But it's difficult because of the politics. Now North and South Korea like a proxy cold war and the US and China at the back. We feel unfortunate about that so that We won't hate and feel pity for Korean Coz We understand your dilemma. I am disgusted because the US and China are dragging other countries into their own cold wars. That's the nature of influencers, and it's outrageous. Big two always want to destroy the other. Hoping that the real peace world will come and The UN became a truly influential international government to stop the superpowers from doing bad things, and today the superpowers often ignore the UN. The US often steals work that the UN should do, such as sanctioning other countries and maintaining troops in everywhere. And China also ignore UN to do what they want to do.
