This will vary by department, but a rule of thumb is as long as the driver's vision is unobstructed, most officers will give you a pass. If it is six months later, and you are still driving around with that cracked windshield they may take it more seriously. And unobstructed vision doesn't even require a windshield at all. I know two stormchasers, one was in Texas and the other in northern Nebraska, that got caught in a hail storm and had all their windows shattered. In both cases they bought some motorcycle goggles, took a baseball bat and knocked out the windows completely. Put their goggles on and hightailed it for home. Only one comment was made by any officer, he pulled up next to them in a drive-in and said "Looks like y'all had a bad day", to which they strongly agree. He told them to drive safely and left.

when I went into the Navy I started off enlisted working as a Master at arms reached MA2 (basically the navy version of a Sgt.) before completing my degree and going officer. I ended up at Lieutenant Commander at my highest which is the gold oakleave of a Major in civilian Law Enforcement or the other military branches like the USMC. worst mistake I made was getting out

I’m gonna tell you right away: Pay and benefits ARE NOT worth the risk that you’re gonna be facing every day, especially in a SWAT team. Probably the only good PD is NYPD with their 100k+ pay after 5 years of service (even though that’s not that much in NYC). Otherwise, you’re better off joining the FBI or military.

Detectives have different ranks. Usually, they're at least a Sergeant/Corporal, and there are plenty that are Lieutenants too. It also depends on the specific department.

Im speaking for the NYPD. Detectives technically don't hold any power. They are literally, all grades are equivelant to a Patrolman in ordering power. But they are assigned investigative leads in cases, which gives them to ability to give orders. To counteract this lack of authority, detectives have grades. These are only pay grades though. A detective 3rd grade will be paid more than a patrolman and less than a sergeant. A detective 2nd grade will be paid more than a sergeant and less than a lieutenant. It's complicated.

Perhaps because I am a fan of the KISS principle, it would may make more sense if:- Detective 3rd Grade -> upper end of a Patrolman's pay band (in other words, almost, if not exactly, the highest salary a Patrolman expects to receive after both a set time period of service, and a good conduct record). Detective 2nd Grade -> within the same pay band as a Sergeant. Detective 1st Grade -> within the same pay band as a Lieutenant. And thus to 'Detective' (ala un-uniformed) Captain. That would, possibly, even out any overlaps, although I am not sure such a move will please any one in the NYPD below Captain ... [Edited for dumb errors ...]

No, we don't pay for the fuel. Most departments I'm familiar with use gas depots owned by the municipality they serve. We are required to accurately provide the amount of fuel we use and provide the current mileage of the vehicle at the time we refuel.

In my town the city has a contract with a gas company. It is just a company that provides gas for city vehicles. The cops have a pin or card that they can enter at the pumps.

Hey! Great video! My department runs a little differently. It goes Academy Recruit, then Probationary Officer/ Police Officer 1 (PO1). Probation lasts for a year and includes the FTO period, which is usually 3 months long unless they think an officer needs more help/ training in something. After that, is Police Officer 2 (PO2). This is most of the department. Officers also have the option of going through the Career Development Program (CDP) where they can become a Senior Police Officer (SPO) and earn the single chevron. At the completion of the CDP, they become a Master Police Officer (MPO), which has the chevron with a little diamond under it. Then there's Sergeant and First Sergeant, the Street Supervisors. There are 2 SGTS and 1 FSGT on every squad. Then there's Lieutenant and Captain, who are what you described. Then there's Major, who's in charge of a Division of the department, like the Operations Division, Support Division, etc. There are only 3 to 4 Majors in the department as far as I know. Then Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel are the Assistant Chief and Chief respectively. Apparently, a lot of the higher ups and the more political figures of the community are looking to change some things and may add the rank of Corporal somewhere in there..

Not sure if that is his radio/badge # generally the lower the # is the higher the rank. my town PD is in the 800's and 801 is the chief's # a badge in the 20's depending on dept size might be a Capt. or Lt. all the way down to slick sleeve. Its the same thing in Fire/EMS I currently hold a Captains position in my town Dept. and my radio/Badge # is 13 (though it should be 5 right now I just did not want to change my # on account of 13 being my lucky # ;) )

In my town's police department (Smaller department, 1 station and about 80 officers for 32k people) it's Chief (Uses eagle insignia), Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Officer, Cadet. There are 2 Captains, one runs Administration Bureau, and the other, Operations, and Lieutenants are either division heads or shift commanders, while Sergeants are just shift supervisors.

I appreciate you getting those chomo's off the streets. How ever I do have a question about your guy's ranking structure as far as it compares to ours. I am a former 6year US Army veteran and I don't know much about the law enforcement ranks accept for This video, & what little I had doing security before the military. How ever while I was in the military it was rumored in my department that our ranks out rank you guys period. I always thought that was only applicable if martial law goes into effect, or if a regular police officer were to come on base their not allowed to do anything to us and only the military police handle situations like that. Because of UCMJ. But if we're DUI or doing stupid shit off post I noticed those guys would go to jail and get out the next day.

you can turn down a promotion, usually what happens is the department will look for officers with career goals that include a promotion to LT or whatever. If there's a lack of qualified officers with the desire to be promoted past Sgt they'll ask qualified Sgts how they feel about being promoted long before the promotion ever comes down the pipe. You can turn down a medal but it is always, always considered extremely bad mannered and is usually only done due to some sort of protest with the reason for getting the medal. You will probably get your ass chewed hard for turning down an award of any kind.
