Being a psychiatric nurse is amazing, but sometimes many people dont know exactly what we do on a daily basis. What we do is extremely important for patients and it’s important for other to recognize what we do.
Whether you want to go into psych nursing or not, you should recognize what we do is important for patients hospitalized.

Rhea Willliams in UK, nursing is divided into groups. Child nursing, adult nursing, learning disability nursing and mental health nursing. Check with your nursing school if they have programs like that. I’m starting mental health nursing in uni in September. Good luck 😉

I was a psych nurse for a decade in the locked wards at a state psych hospital. I feel state psych hospitals are MUCH different. They get the “last stop” patients, the “worst of the worst” and had chronic patients that basically lived there as they had no where else to go. I feel state hospitals are MUCH different than normal hospital and private psych hospitals. We got hurt A LOT, pretty much every day was WILD. You wouldn’t believe the stories. I miss it sometimes, you had to have strong relationships with your co workers and had to be a real team. We always used to say we should have written a book about what happened in that hospital.

I worked at a state inpatient psych unit for 8 years. It was challenging, but I loved it. I am currently in school pursuing my PMHNP degree. I love Psych Nursing. It is not for everyone though. You have to be very passionate about helping mental health patients. You also have to be kind, patient, and a caring person.

I have been a psych nurse for 10 years. I did outpatient for a while which was nice but then there was too much turn over and I was burned out. Now I’m back inpatient and there are some patients that want to be there but there are others who want to leave because they can’t smoke, don’t like the food, can’t get certain hygiene, makeup. These people are so entitled and ungrateful. I have been called every bad name in the book but at the end of they day there are always pleasant patients who are truly sick and appreciate you. It really depends on the group. To me it’s definitely less stressful than bed side nursing.

You have to put yourself in your patients shoes. You must understand that they are there for a reason, and 99% of the time when were at any type of hospital we are at our worst. Be patient with them, many of us just want a helping hand but are too scared to receive the help because we believe we are unworthy of it. Plus, they are living in that psych ward for 3days or longer, many of them miss their home or feel even lonelier

So my family and I take care of a good friend of mine that I've known since childhood that has a life-threatening / terminal illness he was in the hospital getting treatment two weeks worth of treatment and on the last week of treatment the doctor said that his illness was progressing and ever since he heard that his whole demeanor and personality has changed he hasn't been his chatty self he's been more isolated and he's not usually isolated due to this and since he has never had any problems with his mental health his social worker / counselor and his doctor recommended is that if he doesn't start getting back to his old self soon then they want him to be in a psychiatric unit for at least a week for observation. The thing is the hospital he goes to for his terminal illness and the psychiatric unit are two separate hospitals because the hospital for his terminal illness doesn't have a psychiatric ward. I'm really scared to make that decision to send him to a psych unit because due to the nature of his health he has so much on a daily basis he gets IVs through Port he gets feedings through his feeding tube during the day by gravity through a syringe and someone has to feed him and he gets hooked up to a feeding pump at night he's on supplemental oxygen as needed and he gets breathing treatments throughout the day if he's having trouble breathing he needs to be suctioned and suction quick he can't be poked in his arms or hands where his veins are and that is one of the reasons why he has a port and that is how he gets IVs and blood drawn and by the time they would want him to be in a psych ward he would have to have his IV Port needle changed and due to where that is placed you have to be very careful when doing that because that is awfully close to his heart. And as you can imagine if someone were to try to access his port and it misses his port and goes to that area let's just say it's not good. I've heard psych units aren't really great at managing their patients on a personal level I don't know if that's true I don't know what psych nurses can do but due to the nature of his house and immune system and since you have to be careful not to mess up at all when it comes to his care I'm very scared to make the decision to send him to that psych ward for a week I'm honestly hoping that through family interaction with me and my siblings and my parents we can get him back to his old self and he won't have to go in there. Just to clarify something I am a college student but in my culture we stay with our families until we get married. But I learn how to do my friends care from my mom because she used to be a nurse specifically his nurse whenever he was in for treatment for his condition when he was little before he became an adult. I really don't want to make that decision the send him there because if those psych workers and psych nurses don't do everything properly when it comes to his physical care for his illness let's just say the circumstances would be horrible and I don't know if psych nurses could do all the things he needs I just don't want the staff to accidentally will you know severely injure or even worse cause something fatal to happen also he is a very very very devout Muslim and he has to pray 5 times a day and that may come up during group therapy or lunch or something but I'm Catholic but I've seen how important prayer time is for them they cannot skip unless they are practically sick in bed and whenever he does Skip prayer time you can say whatever you want to him but because of how strict he is when it comes to his religion if you were to skip prayer time and not have a good excuse he feels like the biggest Center and that is because in his religion his goal is to please his creator and he does not want to let his Lord down. That's one thing me and my family really admire about him he is so devout especially when it comes to his prayer

I have aspirations to become a psych NP but i hate the idea of prescribing medicines that will have a negative impact from the side effects. Please write me back because i like the idea of helping to rehab a persons psych and the work hours and pay. But i really wouldn't want to prescribe medicine if it will harm a person in the long run or from a withdraw.

Erick Cortez my son has schizophrenia he is a bigger danger to himself not taking meds. There are side effects to meds, but also “side effects” to not taking them. I’d start with ones that carry lesser side effects first if you can. I want to become a psych nurse to help more people like my son and to be the best support for him I can be. With my personal experience I feel I can relate to my patients and their families. Reframe how you look at meds...good luck to you

Agreed. I was diagnosed with severe ADHD and tried so hard, for a whole year, to avoid being medicated. I struggled and drove myself insane with how unproductive and distractable I was, despite using every non drug recommendation on the planet and all my best effort. Once I found a medication regimen that worked, things were so much smoother. Yes I deal with some side effects, but I manage them. It's worth it

Last night, I unsuccessfully tried to de escalate a dementia pt from attacking me while avoid the feces he had spread all over himself and the bathroom. First I had to let him finish urinating in the shower fully clothed all over his socks. Then he proceeded to yell at me and posture towards myself and staff, unwilling to let anyone help him as he got feces everywhere. Short staffed on the senior care unit as per usual. I awoke several times today (I work nights) thinking about my own behavior and feelings towards this guy. What could I have done different? Why was I about to lose my patience with him? How did I let myself buy into the moment and let him have control of my emotions? I can tell you psych nursing is a challenge with very little obvious rewards. Most patients don't have the comprehension to understand the position we put ourselves in to help them. But every now and then you reach one and/or you learn something about yourself and it makes it worth it.

Honestly, it all depends on you. Typically I would say make sure you're stable because working with this population can be tough even for the mentally tough. It's all about practicing self care and setting limits for yourself but it's totally doable. The beauty about being a nurse is if you can't handle it, you can always switch specialities. I suffer from depression and had the worst year of my life last year (2021). I was suicidal off and on throughout the year and went inpatient at my local psych unit in June. Now I work on that same unit as a psych tech, and I’m thinking about going to nursing school and going into psych specialty. Like you, I have a passion for helping people who are in that low, low place where I’ve been myself. I’ve only been working on the unit for a little over a month, but so far, so good! If you can get yourself stabilized I say definitely give it a try!

Male nurse here, currently working in the drug rehab unit of a psych hospital. Working in psych is the best thing I've done for myself in my profession. Best advice, understand that you are a minority and the phrase "Nurses eat their young" exists for a reason. Also, nursing school and the real world are very different things. Your first six months are going to suck no matter what; don't get discouraged, it does get better. Avoid the gossip and cattiness as best you can, keep your head down and do your job to the best of your professional ability. I think psych is one of the better specialties for men in nursing, and I too intend to become a psych NP. Best of luck to you.

Hello I have some questions for you. I worked as a mental health tech for about 8 months and now I just applied for nursing school. I really want to keep working in a mental health facility. Whenever I called the nurses when there was an incident they were quick and rude with me lol. They did not want to help me they were in their office all the time except when there was a restraint . When they were called to help count the time of the restrain they acted like it was interrupting their whole day lol Is this common or was the place I worked at just crappy ?Are the nurses supposed to help the mental health techs or are they just too busy in the office all the time? I only worked at one place so It would be nice getting some input from other facilities thank u

@@sakurafox4551 i went thru MAB training each year. i jumped in MANY times. once ya get use to working together as a unit ya learn to read each other's signals on which limb to take, where to stand etc... It is scary at first and yes i got hurt at times, but ya just do it. The worst thing is to get a staff who is macho and gung ho. Those are the ones who get hurt or get you hurt. ANd set off patients. If a patient can be talked down, that is best. But some staff think they are Rambo and just want to jump. Once we had a patient there named Terrence. He and i had a good repour. But he was not assigned to me. THe assigned nurse pissed off Terrence and i could see Terrence was going to go off. Terrence was hugh, big guy, could rip your head off. i told the charge nurse to let me walk him to time out room and talk to him. "NO. he is not your assigned patient." Well the nurse assigned pissed him off and Terrence broke his nose and there was a big violent take down. It was a mess. If you have a staff who has a good repour with a patient and will talk to the staff then let that staff handle it. To many staff just want to hang out in the nursing station or med room and talk. I'd rather go out and talk to my patients during some of my free time when i am not charting , pouring meds etc... Trust it works out better in the long run.

Most of my clients liked me I only got hurt one time in my 8 months working there and it wasn't serious I got kicked hard in the stomach and he did give me a warning I didn't listen haha so that was my fault 😅 my supervisors kept telling me I was too nice I just treated the clients like my own children and not like prisoners lol it would have been nice to have actually worked with the nurses instead of them getting pissed when something went down haha I just got accepted into nursing school !

@@sakurafox4551 there is a fine line between treating them like your kids and inmates. i retired from psych prison work. i went into that after years working in reg psych units. did it for the pension. trust as ya get older ya think about that. anyway, look at is as a job None of these people/ patients you want to see outside of work. trust me on that. Keep the drama away from home. Now that i am retired when i see a person on the street who is mentally ill, i just walk away. i dont need that anymore.

Im doing a psychology major and once I’m done I’ll go for nursing school at French college in Montreal to become a psych nurse but honestly becoming an np is not my interest I mean I want to be a nurse and it seems like np is just a pseudo doctor yes they diagnose and prescribe but well is not really nursing as it’s not being with the patient as an RN would

Daniel Jimenez Good luck in becoming a RN. After you’ve worked as a RN for awhile maybe then you will decide for yourself how you may want to further your education if you choose to do so. Whether it’s becoming an NP or « Pseudo Dr. » as you call or maybe doing something else. Nursing is a rewarding career. I bet you’ll love it.

I work 4 days 12 hr shift. If it was up to me I’m allowed to do as many shift as I want due to the massive understaff problem at my psych unit 😂 they even pay us $10 more an hour on days we are called in !

You need to understand I have sympathy for them because I was one of those victims but even worse I had an allergic reaction to medication n I was put in restraints I couldn’t say anything my throat was stuck. I couldn’t move a single bone in my body

Make a fucking change in the world because putting mental health people along with special needs & disabilities in restraints is fucked up n you have to realize what do they feel at the end of the day in that bed what they’re thinking about when being drugged up. Yes every special needs & disabllity people are different in many areas but that doesn’t mean to not treat like they are not human n these mental health hospitals do not have the resources, they can’t have phones neither they can’t even use a computer to watch KZbin videos or games to enjoy. Some of them come out n feel like they’re the same how they felt before the mental health hospital. This not Change, MAKE A CHANGE. @@fatboydayoungan i am retired. i get my pension check and my SSI check, no longer have to deal with it,. and i sat with MANY a patient talking to them. i did it alot. talked many a patient down from going off. but restraints are needed at times. if ya net a patient talk and talk they will do it for your whole 8 hrs. and i wont get any work done. it is alot more work then you realize. there is a reason the patients cant have those things. try working in the field before ya tell me. BTW what do you do fora living ?

Psychiatric nurses don't really do much but hand out medication, document, and sit around talking. Other than that they don't really do much. Really a no-brainer job. Mental Health assessment a 1. checklist of questions 2. Develop and follow-through care plan (follow Dr's orders) 3. Crisis intervention (calls unit assistants and security on standby) 4. Be a team player ( make friends with your co-workers) 5. Maintain a healing and safe environment ( no shit sherlock). Lots of hyperbolic wording and exaggerated excitement to make the psychiatric nurse job sound sophisticated. When you actually sit down and carefully look at in detail what these people really do it is not that interesting and there really is no skill involved. I worked on a psyche unit for years and have seen it all.
