I have to say, a lot of the new menus are pretty solid, still love the older menus of meatloaf, beef stew, and all those, but thank Odin that the Vomelette doesn't exist anymore!!!
@Maria_Erias2 жыл бұрын
It's funny, because I grew up eating the old MREs from the 80s as a kid because my dad would pick up cases of them for us to take with us hiking, hunting, camping, shooting. So I got to appreciate and love the old ham slices, chicken a la king, beef stew, spaghetti and meatballs. Then as an adult, I got to try out the "new" (for then) MREs from the 2000s and they were a huge step down.
@DJTheMetalheadMercenary2 жыл бұрын
@@Maria_Erias Yeah some menus are just a tossup, definitely like some of the older ones over newer ones, but some of the new ones aren't bad at all. Kinda sad they don't have the hotsauce in them anymore though.
@null643 Жыл бұрын
@@Maria_EriasI bet they didn't put as much crap ingredients in them back then? Now its things like soy, corn syrup and more in everything, list is too long to name.
@Maria_Erias Жыл бұрын
@@null643 You're probably right. I remember them not being bad at all. The ham slices really did just taste like Spam, which is just pork, salt, water, and sodium nitrate, pretty much. And the chicken a la king was pretty simple, but hearty. My favorites were the fruitcake and maple nut cake, though. They were super dense and slightly chewy rather than crumbly. Then you got the freeze-dried fruits, either peaches or mixed fruit, that came in bar form. Good for eating as they were, as I rarely rehydrated them.

My breakfast is actually really light. I mostly eat oat porridge with something (usually apple and cinnamon or chocolate) and it works well,or light pastry with tea. Also Slovak 24h MREs that are avaible to civilians too contain lunch,dinner,but also breakfast. Its mostly rice pudding with something like cinnamon,vanilla, cardamon. Or an oat porridge with chocolate,fruits,etc.. I havent eaten the breakfast meals yet but heard they are quite good.

I’ve always felt weird when it comes to MREs. I went to basic in 1995. We still were getting the old dark brown MREs with no heaters. Even at my first unit we got heaters separately for awhile. Yet I always loved them. I mean they were way better when you could heat them. I even liked the old school omelet with ham. As long as you knew to crumble it up before opening it and add the whole Tabasco. And hopefully you could warm it. But it was good. And the frankfurters? Yum. Some I liked more than others sure. But I always thought they were great.

Breakfast MRE! I knew something was missing, and by God I can’t believe I never thought of it! I think a normal breakfast needs to be big, nutritious, and most importantly easy-to-digest. You don’t realize just how important breakfast actually is when you catch gastritis from it. 😵💫 Cereal-and-porridge-like stuff, scrambled eggs, toast varieties, fruit, hash, hot cakes, to name a few. Obviously, some people need some kind of breakfast meat (bacon 🙄) which I take no position on, as long as its FDA approved.

I missed MREs. My first hitch, USAF 1976-1980, once they had a bunch of us slogging through the swamp looking for a dropped ECM pod. For lunch, they gave us C-rats. Second hitch, US Navy 1980-1986, we had a long day of firefighting and gas chamber training. And again, we were given C-rats. I guess they had to use them up before issuing the new MREs. So I discovered the pleasures of MREs later in civilian life. 😎

I have a question: this amount of (reduced) calories seems not enough to keep a soldier well fed and through the day, or am I wrong?
