Before the 1930s, pilots wore clothing derived from military tradition, established during World War I. The uniform had to be practical, comfortable and especially warm, as world war one planes were open-top cockpits. So their uniforms were primarily made from thick and heavy leather, filled with sheep wool or other insulating linings, to protect them from freezing temperature and wind coming from the propeller. Large oversized front pockets to allow easy access to navigational charts whilst wearing thick gloves. A scarf to keep your neck protected from the cold. Khaki trousers, black boots, and a soft leather helmet with pockets for the intercom or radio headsets. Practicality was key, looks secondary! But nevertheless that's how the leather bomber jacket was born!
This outfit was quickly adopted into the civil aviation sector by ex-military pilots who, during peacetime, worked in airmail and cargo transport.
Nine years after world war one had ended, good old Pan Am started operation in 1927. And Juan Trip, the founder and CEO of Pan Am, introduced the first official pilots uniform as we know them today.
But the question arises why even wear a uniform in the first place?
At the beginning of a PAN AM's great success, most of their planes were flying boats like the Sikorsky S-40 or the Boeing 314.
Airports were rare, but harbours and docking ports for boats were available, as boats were the primary means of transportation back then. Therefore passengers boarded planes at docks as if they were boarding a boat. Well, initially, they did until that boat started flying.
And as we all know, captains on boats and ships wore uniforms long before planes were even invented. Boat captains would mingle with their passengers during evening dinners and therefore wore representable attire. Clothing that stood out from the crowd!
Well, Juan Trippe was very particular about customer service and satisfaction. He wanted his passengers to feel as if they were boarding a luxury cruise liner. Pilots wouldn't have the time to chat with their passengers, like boat captains, but they would greet them at the door during boarding. So Juan Trippe adapted the naval uniforms making the pilots look tidy and professional, not just during boarding but also during flight, as the cockpits back then had no doors. Ah yes, the good old days.
So, PAN AM pilots were offered black trousers and black jackets with braided stripes on the lower sleeves representing the crew member's rank. Added with a black and white hat, with a golden insignia, representing the airline's name and its logo, and you had a pilot standing out from the crowd!
And if something looks and turns out great, others will copy it. So by the 1950's every airline that wanted to mimic the success of Pan Am, had implemented the naval look-a-like pilots uniform!
I hope you enjoy this video :)
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

"The good old days were flightdecks had no doors" - I remember the 1990th flying in Germany in smaller planes - also no doors. So my college looked into the flightdeck. After the flight he asked the pilot what the red light in the indicator panel was. "That's overspeed warning. But that old plane is always kept pushing" 🤣 Doors may not only have one purpose 😉

I'm from Saudi Arabia and I have seen some captains had a star on their sleeves in Saudia Airline. I got curious as I haven't seen such insignia so I asked the captain and he said that he is a senior captain. However, he then added that some of the captains who have the star insignia are chief pilot of the airline. Both senior captains and chief pilots are rarely seen around but they are there. P.S. Another great video Captain Joe!! Keep it up :)

Good evening Captain Joe. Just wanted to let you know that I was able to board a real Concorde today. It was in Seattle at The History of Aviation Museum. What a stunning airplane. I never thought I would be able to get to see one in person let alone board it. I can only imagine your perspective as a pilot wanting to fly one these beauties of the sky as mine is just to see one. I used to get more airtime than some pilots did. I flew an average of 20 flights a week at one point. But that included more commuter planes than main line jets. And Northwest was my choice of airline and where I had my FF miles. In the late 80's early 90's I can remember being the only passenger on the commuter from Indy to Detroit City. The pilots would sometimes invite me up to the flight deck and let me sit in the fold down seat. Like you said, those days are gone forever. Those pilots were all less than 2 years senior. Many flights had two 2-stripers for pilots. Also when you're the only passenger with 20-ish year old pilots, normal flight parameters were ignored. They would bank 30° and hand fly it like a fighter plane. Kids being kids.

I've seen some anecdotal evidence that some airlines use a single stripe to mean a cadet in training, and two stripes as a qualified flight officer. Once they pass their line checks they move to three stripes, so some first officers from what I understand can have as little at 200 hours flight time, but I presume these are smaller regional aircraft. Unfortunately this viewed is gathered from way to many hours watching various aviation videos, so I cannot give any specific airlines or references. But would be interested if anyone else has seen this practice around.

I do know some airlines that have stripes and stars for captains, PIA I believe literally issue all their captains with 4 stripes and a star, Malaysia Airlines captains that have a star shows that they are a management pilot, Emirates captains that have stars I believe are at the rank of senior training captains and above, Aeromexico captains with stars I believe indicates that the captain flies long haul transoceanic routes I believe EgyptAir also has captains with stars however I'm not really sure what they represent .

His uniform had 2 gold stripes with a thin Purple one in-between. it's so when they are traveling on board the passengers can mistake him as flight crew instead of worrying them seeing an engineer on board.
