Pause/Break key is lowkey the most underrated key on the keyboard for three simple reasons: 1. it's basically a free key: since it's rarely used anywhere, there aren't any collisions with existing uses for it, so you can map it to whatever you want, and you have a single button doing stuff that you would normally need modifier (ctrl alt shift + other keys) combos. 2. its position: it's usually placed in most right place in top row, meaning it's easy to find by touch without looking at the keyboard 3. The button is layered, meaning "Pause" and "Break" are two different buttons depending on whether you hold the Ctrl or not. So you can map Pause (Pause/Break key only) to do one thing, and Break (Pause/Break while holding Ctrl) to do another thing. For example, to bring up a Steam overlay, the default shortcut is Shift+Tab, which was beyond annoying in some games (e.g. in GTA V, Shift is used for fast running, and Tab is for opening weapon wheel, so opening a weapon wheel while running opens Steam overlay in a critical moment and makes you lose your sh*t). For that reason, I just re-mapped the Steam overlay to be opened by pressing only Pause/Break button and it's so much easier to access it, and I have no collisions with modifiers and frequently used buttons. If you had some other overlays (from screen record software or some other stuff, but you didn't like their existing key combo shortcut), you can remap that to Ctrl+Pause/Break. It can be used in any game or any program which supports key mapping, and since its keyboard position is easy to find without looking and isn't used anywhere, it's great for such purposes.

Alt + a number in the range of 000 to 255 on the numeric keypad will give you the full asci character set. In particular alt+255 will produce a blank which can be useful for a number of "hidden" purposes. It was better in the "old" days before GUIs to create hidden folders/directories because the dir cmd would show nothing. Of course ascii wasn't the only key encoding scheme and even now it is quite possible to remap your keyboard if that kind of thing grabs you. Yes, I know encoding and mapping are very different but related things. Have fun girls and boys! Maybe ascii art will make a trivial comeback.

5:35 On the contrary; I use Home and End quite frequently. If where you want to go just happens to be the start or end of a line, it's faster than moving your hand to the mouse, then moving the mouse to the target location. Even if the mouse were somehow faster, there's still a use; if you're typing in a one-line text field (like the search bar on youtube) and you've typed more than can fit, you can't even click on the start of the line because it's hidden out of view. But Home gets you there instantly. TL;DR: Give Home and End some credit, they really do help.

To expand on the Shift-Home/Shift-End.... Shift extends a selection in a word processor. Shift-LeftArrow lets you select to the left, Shift-RightArrow lets you slect to the right. So using Shift in combination with anything that would move the cursor will extend the selection in the same manner, which is why Shift-Home selects everything from the cursor to the beginning of the line, and Ctrl-Shift-Home selects to the beginning of the document (with the End key doing the same thing in the opposite direction). Before they started including a "Select All" command, if I wanted to select everything, I'd hit Ctrl-Home, Ctrl-Shift-End

Print screen key is wonderful. If you go to a website that does not allow you to save photos by the conventional right click method, you do the following... 1) press the print screen key on a picture you absolutely want. 2) open PAINT and paste here. 3) crop the picture and save it with a JPG extension and in the folder you want to store the new photo. I do this all the time, so when Thio says it's not useful, it indeed is useful.

Most of those keys especially the six you last mentioned are extremely usefully m useful when you're using a screen reader. In most cases, insiet actually becomes a modifier key to execute complex keyboard commands in screen readers. Even though I prefer caps lock.

TJ, you mentioned Print Screen and rightly so, it doesn't count for much in modern OS's, but still has a vital function which is a hotkey for taking a snapshot of your desktop, or ctrl+print screen to take snapshot of the active window. In both cases the snapshot saves to the clipboard and can then be pasted in other programs eg Powerpoint

Actually, a lot of these keys have their origins on IBM Mainframe 3270 terminals. When IBM created the IBM PC and XT, they had known that people would use them in place of 3270 terminals so these keys, as well as the F keys, were necessary on IBM PC keyboards. _Mainframe COBOL programmer here, lol_
@allanrichardson14686 жыл бұрын
Hungry Guy Me too (actually I knew Assembler too, but 90 percent of what we did was COBOL). I remember an aftermarket take home 3270 for coverage duty. It was shaped like a distorted chocolate “kiss” with the keyboard hinged and clamped to cover the screen. But to make it smaller, most of the 3270 non-letter keys were in different locations from the real 3270. And it tied up the phone line and operated much more slowly than the ones in the office. Sure beat having to come in at 0300 though.

Why is the "Alt" key on the right side called "Alt Gr" Does it do the same thing? :)
@pulkkakelkka7 жыл бұрын
Depending on your area Alt Gr is used to make the 3rd symbol on the button( lover right corner). Welcome to Finland where you press Alt Gr + 2 to get @ and Alt Gr + e to get € etc.
@MariaTorres7 жыл бұрын
Its the same as shift+ctrl
@frozendude7077 жыл бұрын
"Alt Gr" stands for Alternate Graphic, it allows you to change to the 3:rd and 4:th shift-levels, like when you press shift, you get a capital or the character above the normal one, Alt Gr gets you the one to the right of the normal character, and shift and alt gr together gets the one above that.
@skbartistry24736 жыл бұрын
*Alt gr + 2* and *alt gr + e* also make those symbols in Denmark. I believe that's the case for all of Scandinavia. *Alt gr + 3* also gives us the *£* symbol. *Alt gr + 4* gives us the *$* symbol. *Alt gr + 7* and *alt gr + 0* gives us the *{ }* symbols. *Alt gr + 8* and *alt gr + 9* gives us the *[ ]* symbols. *Alt gr* also gives us the following symbols for the buttons near the backspace and enter keys: *|* *~* and it gives us this symbol for the button next to the left shift key *\* I believe a lot of these are the same for the rest of the Nordic countries.. Also, you can't make a space between words in Windows 10, while pressing the *Alt gr* key. And KZbin can't make anything bold, if either of the following *, . : ;* are placed before or after the *** No matter the spacing between before the star, but it does matter with a spacing after the star. This last line don't make as much sense as I couldn't put a comma after the star
@allanrichardson14686 жыл бұрын
Even in USA keyboards that don’t mark the left and right CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT keys differently, the builder of an application CAN code different functions. For example, in IBM-3270 emulators, the 3270 Enter key, used to send all the modified text on a screen back to the host computer, is usually the CTRL key on the right, and the RESET key, used to unlock the keyboard after trying to type in a protected cursor position, is usually the CTRL key on the left, after the location of those keys on the original 3270 keyboard. The Enter key is used for New Line (or Carriage Return), which tabs to the next unprotected position below the current line. The original 3270 had an ALT key but no CTRL key. The default in the Windows API is to detect only the pressing or automatic repeat of character and action keys, modified by holding down some combination of CTRL, ALT, and/or SHIFT, and the current setting of the CAPS LOCK switch, but there are also ways to detect the pressing or releasing of any key, returning its physical location (thus left and right copies of CTRL/ALT/SHIFT return different codes). I suppose these special API calls are so commonly used in certain countries that the special usage is stamped on the keyboards there, and maybe coded in the keyboard drivers also.
