The Ocean Cleanup

2 ай бұрын

How do we clean the oceans? With a little help from our friends, of course - and Ewan Topping, our Senior Partnership Manager, helps us find them. Hundreds of organizations collaborate with The Ocean Cleanup, and Ewan tells us the key to attracting the right support: identify a shared problem and find partners motivated to solve it. Listen to the full podcast here: theoceancleanup.com/podcasts/....
But it's not all about big organizations - many of you, our listeners, support The Ocean Cleanup each month. Ewan tells us how this is now easier than ever with our new fundraising platform, ready for anyone around the world to help us rid the oceans of plastic: fund.theoceancleanup.com.

The money would be better spent stopping it before it gets to the ocean. Clean-up is important, but why is it there in the first place and how to stop it from getting there? While those soda bottles are easily traceable, I seem to recall that isn't the main source of the plastics in the ocean.

Big disclaimer, first of all: it's good and important that people can participate in this and feel good about it. Now, we need a LAW for this. Plastic producer and plastic consumer MUST pay for this, it's a negative externality that MUST be included in their price. It's too easy making a product that is cheaper respect to the biodegradable ones, and leave the extra cost to the collectivity. It's not fair, they should pay.

Idea: set a fundraising goals for each country to fund at least one. Pool private and government donations together untill one can be built and deployed with costs covered. Once there is enough funding Paint a flag on it. Make the plastic collection count public on the website so everyone can see what has been collected. A little friendly compitition goes a long way. You will likely get far more donations too.

pleeease consider building a pyrolysis chamber on the ships!! I want to help but nobody wants to talk about how much petroleum it takes to run these ships. why not process some of the plastic on site back into petroleum fractions and fuel oil, and the lighter fraction of flammable hydrocarbons can be fed directly into the engine, while heating the pyrolysis reaction to process the plastic. This will allow you to stay out there longer and harvest way more plastic, while cutting down on logistics of moving the collected garbage back to land and thus all that carbon spared!! Its not that hard I have the chemistry knowhow to run the whole program!! just ask me to help!!

Do cargo ships cross the GPP? I don't know if there are any major shipping lanes in that area, but assuming two cargo ships had the same starting point and the same destination at the same time, couldn't they just casually drag one of the systems between them on their way through the GPP? They're moving that way anyway and would only need a small amount of additional fuel to make up for the extra weight caused by the drag, rather than The Ocean Cleanup having to send out ships specifically to go there and collect garbage. That could speed up the process and reduce the resources (fuel) needed.

Love this idea as a way of contracting out the work. From my understanding most cargo goes through the Panama Canal and the patch is further south. However there are other patches and i still think this is something worth exploring.

Plastic eventually breaks down into even smaller plastic, not visible to the human eye, and over time it gets into our food chain when animals and sea life eat it. Currently it does not pose any threat, even though there is microplastic going through our bloodstreams, but overtime it will become a significant health hazard. That’s also not to mention the huge damage it will do to the environment, namely by killing or injuring marine animals and harming the oceans ability to capture carbon.
