In any culture, there may be some extreme cases on either side. Normally foreign interviewers will cover only these extreme cases. But this interview reflects the exact mindset of a average Indian citizens. I deeply appreciate Keith Ballard for his efforts.... I agree on foreigners covering only extreme cases. Real life situations fall very rarely in category of 'we got best' vs 'we got it worse'. This woman seems quite educated, articulate and thoughtful. Not only she describes her situation well, but also provides a context to her situation and also explains why she did what she did. NOT EVERY PARENT IS LIKE HER, HERE. There are lot of parents who are making important decisions for their kids without putting in much thought or without explaining their stand. There are many invisible conflict in our families which stay hidden because we are taught it's disrespectful to express your discomfort. This lady explains she didn't let her sons move abroad because she created good employment opportunity for them right here. That's not case with most of the families. Parents prevent their children fulfilling their dreams without creating optional opportunities for them. All in name of family and love. Lot of love in family that outsiders see is mostly dead weight that stops us from developing. Then someone rejects all this drama and goes out to live their lives and they are labelled traitors to the family. It is very toxic.
@kunaljanvalkar28502 жыл бұрын
@@shreyas4142 Agreed. It's very hard to succeed in India with hard work and labour. So we have to rush for education like madmen. In USA if you can show up to work and put in real effort you can build a comfortable life for yourself. Although that is changing in cities because of big corporations, but in rural US, hard work really pays off.

@SK-ck9qu2 жыл бұрын
Having talent is not unique to India. There are talented individuals everywhere. What is sad is that IITs produced these well trained engineers and scientists and India could not utilize their skills and talent mainly because of state controlled, socialist style industry that existed till 1992. India GDP at that point was about 450 B USDs. After liberalizing its economy, the GDP increased multiple times to more than 3 T USDs in a relatively short time of 3 decades. India still lags behind the US, EU and even Russia in many critical technologies such as microprocessor fabrication, fighter jet engines, heavy rockets etc.

Oh my goodness!! Why, then, do you see people of Indian ancestry becoming CEOs of global tech behemoths? Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google LLC and Alphabet Inc. Arvind Krishna is the CEO of the IBM Group. Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella Adobe Inc. CEO Shantanu Narayen Mastercard's CEO is Ajaypal Singh Banga. Furthermore, India now has more unicorns than the United Kingdom, and is ranked third in the world in terms of unicorns. The United Kingdom governed India till 1947, plundering the country's resources. According to the IMF, India has surpassed France as the world's sixth largest economy. Also, why do you believe India has been able to achieve such rapid development? It was as a result of India's emphasis on education. Before passing judgement, make sure you have all of the information, and don't base your decisions on the opinions of strangers. India has a lot to develop and is on its way to doing so, and it has done so admirably since it won independence only 75 years ago, despite the fact that Indians are always dealing with terrorism and bloodshed from their neighbours. Before you pass judgement, think about it.

A fairly accurate portrayal of the average Indian’s attitude towards education. The problem is that this HUGE demand for education is not done adequate justice from the SUPPLY side by the schooling system which continues to be grossly underfunded and insufficiently equipped in terms of personnel as well as quality. Teacher quality is not that great across most of India despite the profession being given a lot of nominal respect, and is seen as a “reserve job” for a housewife who’s been pushed to the edge, rather than as a genuine career and life pursuit requiring sustained investment of time and practice. This is not putting down the countless numbers of dedicated teaching staff, female and male, whose work, essentially, “births” the production line of geniuses India is known for these days. Add to this the incessant political interference in schools, poor textbook material (biased, closed-minded, inflexible and anachronistic) and the lack of teacher independence, and you have a system destined to produce millions of people who [think] they are educated but are in fact not good at all for even the most basic tasks in today’s work environment. People like Nadella and Pichai, who came from this system, are rare exceptions than the norm. Those two sons of that gracious lady - a mech engineer and a computer engineer - both working at a garments retail shop are pretty much proof of the failure of the country’s education system as it presently stands. This is why one of India’s largest imports these days - registering in reverse as students going outside of India to study - is quality education. The paradox is that while the pursuit of education is venerated in India - we even have a goddess for that (and my fav)! - this does not translate on its own to the supply of quality education, which is heavily underfunded, politicised and barebones. The appetite for getting educated and to learn exists in India like it does in no other country. Indian parents as well as their children are grossly underserved. That’s the market opportunity for you!

I don't know how in US people leave their parents and stay separately. We Indians have this culture where our parents take care of us and provide for everything until we start earning. Once children grow up and start earning, parents retire and their son(s) looks after them until they die.
