Although you cannot determine if a diamond is mined or lab-grown using a common diamond tester, since both stones are physically and chemically identical, there are machines out there that will be able to tell the difference between the two. The main device used to determine whether a stone is mined or lab-grown is known as a DiamondView. Produced by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the DiamondView uses UV lighting to detect a diamond’s fluorescence, which is the diamond’s sparkle. The DiamondView will then determine what type of stone your diamond is with the colour that the machine’s UV lighting exhibits. With the DiamondView, naturally mined diamonds will generally display a blue hue under a longwave UV light and yellow under a short wave light. HPHT lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, display a yellow-greenish hue under both types of UV lighting

I upgraded (or downgraded) my wifes natural to lab grown and she loves it. Also, it's GIA D VVS1 Excellent so not only is it bigger for less but the specs are notably better. For something to keep, lab grown all the way. For value retention I feel natural will be better because of the limted supply even if demand is impacted by the lab grown market. With lab grown having infinite supply and increasing demand the value will likely continue to fall, possibly to the point that natural becomes favored again for the connection to higher value.

I believe I read somewhere that the machine that they put lab and natural diamonds in that can tell them apart does it by detecting impurities in the natural stones. So basically lab diamonds of the same grade and clarity as a natural one is still more pure

I would buy lab grown because nobody can tell the difference , it’s substantially cheaper and also because you always run the risk of somebody swapping the earth grown diamond (s) for the cheaper lab grown when you go to get the piece resized for example. If the only way you can tell is by putting it in a machine then it would be very hard to tell if it’s been swapped out.

Definitely worth having a GIA certificate, or an ethical gemologist to appraise your diamond .

Yes, you should by lab grown because earth grown have been over priced for almost a century. But that’s not true about being swapped out during sizings. Your lab grown diamonds are certified by GIA just like earth growns are. They all have a serial number laser inscribed in them. If lab growns weren’t real diamonds, GIA and IGI would not grade them. Hope this helps!
