Had a boss that I looked up to because he owned and ran the company of 400 I worked for. I started entry level, young and after 9 years earned a jr. executive position reporting directly to him, got the office, car, all the perks. If you asked me, I would say he was the greatest leader but in fact, 20 years removed I've learned he was a terrible leader. He would give a single task, no context and if you did it very well, consistently he would reward you. Then, you would wait until he gave you another. I'll never forget, one day he said, "J, I'm not sure what to do with you. I give you a task and you gobble it up like a pitbull eating steak and then sit and beg for more. Then I give you another piece of meat and you snatch it up and sit and beg for more!". Like it was a compliment. I said, "sir, are you giving me pieces of one steak or does this company have many steaks? He replied, oh wow, there's a lot of steaks! So many steaks, nobody has a clue. Our executives juggle so many steaks in the air! To which I replied, stop giving me pieces of steak then, and give me and the others a whole steak, and see what happens". His face was dumfounded. Clearly he never even considered it. I left that company about 3 months later and when on to lead a companies Sales and Development departments as they grew from 75 when I started to over 300 when I left 7 years later.
