My wife and I just bought an mt07 each. Did our maiden journey on the weekend which was 1200km round trip through the mountains to our first grand daughters christening. Man we had a ball. We are new to this life but extremely excited about all that lies in fro t of us.

@@DoodleOnAMotorcycle with the 600 group of naked bikes being your favourite... I'm a little bit surprised you haven't tried the Suzuki SV 650 for several reasons. I think it's a little bit shorter than the others, it's cheaper than the others - which is a factor in its popularity among new riders, possibly worried about crashing and losing their pride and joy, the insurance will be that bit cheaper since it's a bit less powerful and a lower priced machine. I hope you get a shot of one, I'll look forward to that video.

Had a new 2005 honda shadow. Had it a year. It was in the shop more than my garage. Had a 2016 honda cb500. Throttle got stuck open once on the freeway....never buying honda again

Got the 2019 model as my first bike. Ever since, every minute I'm not riding has been spent wishing I was. At 6'2 I can say it fits taller riders just as well, apart from some moderate butt ache past the 2 hour mark. I love the smoothness of the 4-cylinder, the linear power delivery makes it so easy and unintimidating to ride around town as a beginner, yet if you want, it still pulls like a freight train higher up in the rev range. Also, it's just gorgeous... admittedly one of the main reasons I went for it over the MT07.

I'm 5'6 and can't flat foot it, but it still feels light enough for me to be leaned over one foot. Moving it around off the bike doesn't feel hard to do at all. The power is good too, this is my first bike after my msf and a weekend with a 500f, it's so friendly. So far I love this bike, 1200 miles in 3 weeks!

Bought this same bike as my first street bike/midlife crisis a few months ago. Just got past the break in mark. So far 600+ miles of smiles. Like so many other comments I feel like this is a great first bike especially for either mature noobs like me (42), or younger responsible minded riders. Easy to manage power, easy to ride in traffic, forgiving clutch, low maintenance costs, lots of accessories, and plenty of power to grow with. I've already put the quick shifter and heated grips on mine, grips extended my fall riding season, quick shifter is just fun and handy if you are accelerating quickly. Totally can relate to the horn/turn signal mix ups. I do it all the time, especially when cancelling with my thicker cold weather gloves. Look forward to hearing your final thoughts on it.

i ride a 650F and i must say.. its an amazing bike. i can be going 45 in 6th gear and it still has enough torque to accelerate just fine. ive had it for 2.5 years now and i genuinely think im just going to keep it forever. mod by mod.

I always liked the cb line. Part of the reason it feels smoother than other 650's is because it's an inline 4 and most others are inline twins. An inline 4 will always feel a bit smoother than a twin. Not necessarily better or worse as some actually prefer the feel of a twin more. A v-twin and an inline twin are also going to feel quite a bit different. Good review.

The Honda 650 is a great bike, possibly the most refined bike in that 650/700 class. Try 4 cyl engine is very gentle and predictable down low in the revs, great for beginners. But it's also got plenty of power once you rev it up, good fun for an advanced rider. Having it for a month is a real treat, i would ride the heck out of it. 🙂

I own a Sprint 1050st, 2006. It was a spec decision mostly. I knew I wanted a Sport Touring and this was by far the sportiest. I got a leftover in 07 with free handbags. Now, however it''s pure emotion. It's been down a few times, pushing your limits on the street can be dicey, and now is down with electrical issues. I love my Triumph and we shall be together until one of us kills the other. The Bobber Black will keep it company when the time comes.

The review is really nice. Maybe a recommendation: When comparing the numbers of seatheight, width, weight, wheelbase, etc. You could maybe edit in the numbers on screen on the clips where you're at home to visualise the dimensions abit. Personally I forget numbers really quick even if they are mentioned directly before the second set of numbers.

My wife had a 2021 cb650 R and I really enjoyed borrowing it from time to time. I had an Mt07 for about 1000km and quickly sold it. Its got nothing on the CB650R. CB has better suspension, engine, brakes. Only thing I preferred on the MT was the riding position. Loved the cb engine. Its nice an soft at lower revs but really pack a nice punch and sings at high revs.

Great review! The horn messes a lot of people up and now when I hop onto Ninja's I keep blasting the horn... Muscle memory has adapted to the Honda swap now, haha. If anyone's on the fence about one, I've thrown together my thoughts on it. After spending this summer riding my 2021 CB650R and putting 7k on the on it in just shy of 4 months, you could I enjoy the bike just a little bit. It's one of the most comfortable, neutral feeling, and responsive bikes that gives you the best of both worlds. An upright positioning similar to that of a dual-sport/mountain bike feel, yet reacts almost as fast as a dedicated sport bike. A simple shift of the hips will make the bike move where you want it, even at higher speeds. The sound is perfect stock if you enjoy that F1 high screaming sound of an inline four and yet maintains a nice quiet note at low rpm's saving you grief from your neighbours. The positioning of the exhaust seems more modern and tidy in comparison to it's larger big brother and the offset pipes on the right add a beefy aggressive look. The changes made with the Showa shocks are nice despite not allowing for adjustability (as was stated on some release reviews) and although it is nice as higher speeds, cracks, small pothole and even tarsnakes are noticeable at lower speeds which at times can take away from the otherwise smooth ride. Some may prefer the simplistic and stylish LCD display over the TFT seen on the 1000cc although each have advantages in certain lighting conditions. It would be nice to have had the option for an upgrade package that included switchable riding modes but at least the option for add the quickshifter is available. The classic round headlight on the 650cc vs the slanted back and horseshoe-shaped on the 1000cc black edition has a more classic look that might appeal to those trying to keep the bare bones "old-school" look while having some of the modern appeal thrown into the mix. The lighting itself is phenomenal and extremely bright with just the daytime runners on. The highbeams are on par with that of a xeon headlight in a car and will give you no issues on those dark dingy roads. The biggest disappointment (a small one at that) is the rear seat storage and lack of the promised usb-c charging port. The Americas never got one (even though it's a cheap add-on one can easily do yourself) and even if it did, you'd be hard pressed to even fit a phone in there given the miniscule amount of space offered. The rear seat itself is a challenge itself as you need to apply pressure and keep it level as you push down, back and out. The design of the hooks makes it a pain until you figure out the trick. The bike can easily allow for day long rides provided you take breaks at least every two hours or so, anything over that straight will make your rear end pay the price. It's managed to hold up to a wide array of short road trips in Canada in various conditions and again has extremely smooth and responsive handling. Wind and heavy rainfall can be a bit tricky at times given the exposed nature of a naked bike but even if you're over six foot you can manage if you position yourself well and shift weight as needed to compensate. It has enough weight behind it to hold its ground but will also take some finesse to keep control in more extreme weather. The rear plate holder acts as a decent mud guard and has been an upgraded to metal combined with plastic louvers like those you'd find on the rear window of a old Mustang. It balances the bike's appearance adding length to the shorter body and makes for a nice contour to the rear wheel. As with most Honda's the 2nd gear definitely needs a firm click and isn't something you can gently graze like some bikes. The gearing ratio for it has quite a junp so it's expected to some degree (got spoiled on my friend's '21 MT-09). It's extremely easy to find neutral on this bike but also just as easy to toss it into a false neutral while shifting out of first if you're not assertive with it. You'll find reviews complain about brake and throttle responsiveness but this is coming from people that own and review bikes made for the track. Not something that's anyway realistic to find from a general street bike in this price point. A lot of comparisons are made to the Triumph Triple and that youll get better power, character and value for the price compared to Honda but again, it comes to style/feel preferences along with reliability. If you're looking for a bike that's comfortable, reliable, good street responsiveness and has a bare bones bike feel the 650R won't let you down.

Had one for a year. Fantastic engine note and very confidence inspiring handling. The tail tidy is an abomination but otherwise a very cool looking bike. Ultimately it was part of my bike journey and I’m now on an adventure bike for comfort and touring after a 1500 mile trip last Summer showed it was more of a local blast machine. Unfortunately when you do if there is even a damp sheen to the road it means you get a lovely line up you back and helpfully,on the tail tidy I bought, in heavy rain water collects under the seat. The price of vanity I suppose.

SMOOTHNESS is directly related to piston count and how they engineer out vibrations with counterbalancing. The MT07 is the only bike in your list that has a 270 degree crank P-twin, so its more like a V-twin, I own one, its one of the more rougher feeling engines but the engine throttle feel is still smooth but your hands and butt will feel some vibes. Remember your Triumph Street Triple R 675 and the Honda CB650R have MORE pistons so smoother operation, your Triumph has 3 cylinders and the Honda has 4! Triples and inline-fours also feel super smooth compared to twins and singles. One more thing, you Triumph Street Triple R 675 is BY FAR the most powerful bike and in my opinion isn't in the same class, it has like between 50% to 90% more horsepower than all those bike you tested.

I worked for Honda motor co from 1983-2010 and it was some of the best days of my life. great organization and from cars to motorcycles all the way to a weed eater, Honda made it, Asimo was a revelation for the motor CO along with Honda jet and F1 and indy car engine supplier.... Honda was always on the GET R DONE meter... you made a comment on the CB650R that just kinda made me go,,, WELL YA KNOW!!! Now to set the record straight I was not offended or mad, and I really do respect everyones opinion,, REALLY I DO... you made the comment that when you see a Japanese motorcycle you think cheep..... There is nothing cheap about a cb650r, the engineering is finomial. in fact I ride a 2007 ST1300 that looks like I just bought from the dealer yesterday. it is bar none my most favorite bike I have ever had, from Yamaha to Harley, that V4 just twirls my turbine, I enjoy it better than any of my late model bikes.. So don't take me as being bias or harsh, I know the industry well and I love just a bout any bike I get my hands on... in fact I really want a Bonnie, like real bad,, So Doodle don't take this as a scolding, cause its not, you are just over the moon with your triple, which is one of the smoothest machines ive ever rode.....

Hey Doodle you are such a great interspersion my story and I will try to keep it short. I'm 62 and have road sport bikes as long as that I can remeber but quit riding about 3 years ago. I'm retiring in Feb and thought getting a new motorcycle would bring some very much needed adventure back into my life and to use it as a daily commuter. So the motorcycle that I picked out for me is the BMW G310R Its light has power but not to much to get me into trouble and being short 5'7 with a 30in inseam it fits perfect and its a lot of fun to ride. I am slightly jealous! The 13th test bike? Wow. Well, I wouldn't even have the time to enjoy those, the Swedish summers are too short! ;-) I am not really a fan of four-cylinder engines, but the Kawasaki Z900RS I once got as a loaner while my KTM was in for service was something I could imagine adding to the bikes in my not-existing garage! The preload setting for the rear suspension will have some effect on seat height. From the factory the bike will probably be set up for someone heavier than you. That is something that you could investigate. It might even be an idea for a video.

Excellent point. The springs at least have 4-5 maybe even 6 preloads. If I set them up for my 190 lbs and Doodle dropped her 120-130 self on it it would handle and ride so much worse, than if she had it set down to the minimum, where I suspect it would be best. The weight of the rider is such a large portion of the all up weight, tweaking the springs for the load is really important. She might even need to go to lighter springs. Forks and shocks.

I LOVE my mt07. She's a bit herky jerky on the throttle. The suspension is pretty bad. No TC or ride modes. The seat is an unforgiving plank. But god, the engine is absolutely addictive! The riding position is ideal. The stock Michelin Road 5's are excellent. It just feels grunty and sporty and fun. The bike has so much personality, which is rare for the 700cc parallel twin category IMO.

These days, the name of the motorcycle has little to do with where it is made. Honda's are made all over the world. They once had a motorcycle factory in the US. Triumphs are mostly made in Thailand, as are many Honda, Kawasaki's, etc. The KTM 390's and BMW 310's are from India. What really matters is the quality control. I gave my sister some grief because she showed me "Hans", her Volkswagen GLI Autobahn. It was made in Mexico, so I suggested that maybe José would be more appropriate --- then I ran.

Hi Doodle, I've been riding for 45 years without an accident, and I'd like to make a suggestion to you. First of all, many bike accidents in which a car is involved happens because motorcycles are less noticeable. You may have even experienced having a car driver almost pull out in front of you. I've owned eleven motorcycles over the years, and my current one is a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300a. On my last 4 motorcycles I installed driving lights, mounted low, so they don't blind people, but still make me visible. At the least, even when I didn't have driving lights, during the day I always have on my high beam. 98% of the time, no one flashes their lights at me, and the reality is that it's saved my life a few times. The other thing is, I always try to stay in a position in traffic that gives me the best visibility. In other words, when I'm riding, my goal is to be seen. I stay out of blind spots, when on multi-lane roads like the interstate I avoid being in a clump of traffic, rather I try to make sure there's at least one lane open on either side of me. OH, and BTW, I too live in the Atlanta area. I'm in Henry county, about 32 miles south east of Hartsfield Jackson Airport. Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them, and if an old guy can pay a compliment, I think you're cute as can be. So there...... Have a nice day.

Excellent review Doodle! I am about the same height and i had the opportunity to get a used cbr650r version - i am on my tip toes but the bike weighs so little, it's not really an issue. I have the opposite problem from you, every time i try to hit the horn when a pensioner car driver pulls out in front of me, i press the indicator instead so am powerless to vent my righteous frustration

I've been looking forward to this one! I just started riding this year and my purchase choices came down to the Trident, Z650 and CB650R (with the Duke 390 as an outlier choice). I got the Honda and couldn't be happier - though in truth I epxect I would have also enjoyed the other two. This one is very approachable for a new rider as it needs more revs than its competitors to make power. Keep it below 7k rpm and a little bit of newbie clumsiness with the throttle wouldn't blast me to the moon. And as I got more comfortable and confident on the bike I could incrementally explore the higher revs where the party really happens. I'll eagerly await your full review on this one.

Also keep in mind that Honda almost always is more expensive than the competition. Not sure it it always worthy it...but they'll keep charging more as long as people are willing to spend more.

@@hawkrider88 well they tend to be more expensive than other Japanese brands, but at least in my market, the CB650R and Trident were essentially the same price. And the flip side of your comment about people continuing to pay their asking price - that's what market value is. It's the price the market will bear for a given product.

It's smooth because of that in-line 4 engine. A in-line 2 or 3 it's harder to equilibrate.The more balanced an engine is, the less vibration it operates, resulting in a longer engine life.

I know this is a bit old but I just bought a 2022 CB650R (as my first bike) with 3200km on it. I'm in Canada so I'm not sure how many bald Eagles that is on an American odometer, but the bike is in Cherry condition, I have to pickup my plates tomorrow so I can finally ride for hopefully at least a month and then I'll have all winter to do everything I want to it before spring.

Question for you US folk - is one foot down not a standardised thing they teach you in the MSF? Here in the UK its rare to see anyone put both feet down! We are taught to stop in the control position where poss - left foot down, right foot on rear brake Interested to hear what you guys learn!

They teach two feet down in the basics course, but I think actually towards the end of the course they teach left foot down, but it’s not strongly emphasized or a “pass/ fail” so many newbs like I was leave thinking we better get a bike we can flat foot

I have its baby brother (CB125R) and weirdly it has an increased seat height over the 650 and a wider seat - you'd think it'd be the other way round lol

Decent review fro your perspective-this bike is not for the way you ride--the power and fun factor is way past 7000 rpm and to maintain optimum torque-cruising at 6000 is a good thing at any speed--so to get the most from this wonderful bike a person needs to enjoy a spooled up engine-myself I like low end torque or high and can adapt easily but I think most don’t --these 4’s are great and indestructible--good review

Fist, I really like your vlogs and I have even learned some mental stuff from it. All the talk about smooth engines in your vlogs has got me question my unconditional love to my KTM 690 Enduro R 2012. Today I took a ride in a small town just to see, yes my bike is all but smooth, but so fun. I always have the most responsive mapping active, have to use the clutch a lot in slow speeds but it works well. I got the last model free of ABS and such stuff. Some like it smooth, some like it rough 😊.

Heaps smooth! It was the first thing i noticed over my mt 07 2016 which i just sold. Couple of things i felt straight away, the mechanical tolerances of the buttons/shifter were way higher than the mt 07. Had to basically stomp on the shifter to shift down lol. Not sure if there's assistance from the bike, but i didn't really need to rev match when shifting down - the mt 07 did not like that at all. The thing's pretty heavy too, so im not sure i have the confident to lift and pivot the bike by its kick stand

Hey doodle any way you could do a review on the Yamaha MT09 SP or Honda CB1000R sometimes in the future? There aren’t many female rider reviews and perspectives on those bikes. It’s mostly all chest pounding guys that review those. I feel like they are such awesome bikes because they’re not as crazy as an empty 10 or other leader bikes they’re kind of just in that sweet spot where it’s like a middleweight bike that went to the gym and even though the Honda is 998cc it’s tuned way more chill and not all in your face like the other liter naked bikes. Would absolutely love a doodle review of those 2 bikes. Take care and ride safe

I've had a 2020 cb650r for 2 years. I'm 5' 8.5". The wind buffeting is rough for me!! I changed helmets and visors 3 times, and have a windscreen and extra defector on it as a best result. It's still super loud, I need earplugs and can't hear my music just fyi.

Hi there! having ridden both this amazing Honda bike and the Triumph Trident 660, which one you would recommend to a fellow short rider as me for daily use on mountain roads like the ones you rode with 'em, (since i'm fortunate enough to live in the italian alps)? I'm about to purchase one of these two bikes, and I'd love some hints and recommendations on the handling, breaks reliability and off course, your opinion on the difference within the power dispensing on these two 3 and 4 cilinders bikes! I'm really struggling with this choice since I cannot try the Honda since because of the covid troubles, Honda is failing to provide test rides here in Italy for this year (oppositely to Triumph Trident which I will finally ride next tuesday!). Looking forward to hear your thoughts! Keep up the good work!

The Suzuki GSX-S 750 is a sharp looking naked bike. Unlike Kawasaki and Yamaha which have parallel twin engines, just like the Honda CB 650R, the Suzuki GSX-S 750 has an inline 4 cylinder engine as well.

Hey Doodle. I enjoy your bike reviews. I was wondering if you have a checklist you use when evaluating the bikes. If you had a checklist for each bike you review, you can compare them better. Like with the Honda 650. You seemed to have problem with the switches on the left handlebar. Maybe Honda could redesign the switch cluster if more people would let them know of an issue. Another thing, if you get your demo bikes from a dealer or factory rep, then you could give them a copy of your review. Most manufacturers like feedback. Keep up the good work.

Reaching your foot down has a lot to with the seat shape/tank junction, your inseam and thigh size, footpeg placement, weight, and suspension preload/sag. For example. The MT 09 has a higher seat height than the MT 07. But I feel more comfortable on the MT 09 than the MT 07. Because of the way the tank and seat junction are, the 09 feels narrower. Also the peg placement is in a place that doesn't get in my way so I can reach my feet straight down. On the 07, I have to move my feet further back or further forward which takes away from my reach. And even with two bikes with the same seat height, if the preload is softer on one bike, it will sink lower when you sit which will get you better reach. And if you have a thinner thighs, that also helps reach your feet down. It's a very subjective thing so everyone needs to sit on the bike to find their own fit, or find someone who has the same body type and weight and inseam as you lol

Yep i have a 30 inch inseam and sat on both the mt07 and mt09. I was surprised that I could reach significantly better on the 09. So I test rode that and not the 07. Wasn't for me but now I want to try this Honda and see if it's my next bike

Whether what you drive a car, pick up truck, motorcycle can and will have issues! As a certified mechanic I do except the fact that nothing is really bullet proof! But in overall experience as for as motorcycles are concerned Honda goes out of their way to fix issues and get you back on the road
