It's sort of the idea with what City did with Grealish. Sure, it's a lot of money for a player that isn't in the spotlight like Haaland is for Grealish or Rashford for Antony, but they offer something that is clearly important for their respective coaches. For Guardiola, Grealish gravitates players to him and creates chances because everyone recognizes his offensive threat from his Villa days and creates space for others like De Bruyne and Haaland to give more options. For Ten Hag, Antony gives him some breathing space in terms of playstyle recognition and understands that Antony allows the defenses to stretch a bit wider because he is played as an inverted winger. Antony's off-ball movement is something like what Grealish is like and is definitely something that isn't recognized as much because everyone focuses on the on-ball stuff.

I think the reason people are taking hits at Antony is because he’s being overshadowed by Rashford and for a £100m signing people expected more of him on the ball. He’s doing great, he’s the threat on the right wing United haven’t had since Valencia. And he doesn’t shirk responsibility off the ball. And he’s gonna be able to do that for the next 10 years.
@kirkwood1
@kirkwood1 2 жыл бұрын
He didn't cost £100m, it was €95m. So that's something like £84m. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of money and they overpaid, but he's not a £100m player. In fact, I think the only team in the EPL to break that barrier was City signing Grealish, who's hardly set the world alight.

I think the issue could be him not taking on opponents like saka does for arsenal. It is common for wingers to be skillful. The fact that fans have seen him take on players successfully and him being good at dribbling and yet he doesn't do that at man utd is what has caused a clash in their expectations and what they actually see. So that then makes them a bit biased about his performances and yet on the other wing, rashford is just blazing hot on all fronts. Scoring, dribbling creativity beating players. Expectations and knowledge of what Antony has done before plus the fact that rashford is blazing on the other wing has created a bias against antony

I honestly think Anthony will get more praise once Weghorst dumps Martial out of the starting spot up front. 😅 When Anthony cuts inside, Martial is nowhere to be found, so Anthony can only make a standard pass, or shoot. But with Weghorst in the team, we'll see Anthony create a lot more chances and get some assists.

Second highest goal scorerer for the club this season. 5 in 10 starts, 17 appearances. He needs to learn to use his right foot to at least offer an option to cross it. I want more assists from him. But overall, he's doing fine. Yes, the price tag is a burden, but that's our transfer teams dault for leaving it until the end of the summer and adding €40m to his price! That's not his fault or a reflection of his value.

John murtoch bought him for 85 million when at most he should of been 50. This isn't an Antony problem, but people seem to see the price tag as his fault. He's very similar to Arjen Robben, which is awesome. His goal against Charlton was just the typical Robben goal and I loved it. John murtoch needs sacking. He would walk into BnM, get a bag of midget gems and when the till staff said, "That's £1." He would give them £200 and run. Edit: Charlton not crystal Palace ehoops

Definition of not knowing ball. The issue with the one foot is he dribbles with it, controls with it, and drift past people with it. It isn't just shooting. Fact that he is so one footed severely limits him at elite level. Drop a level and you are OK, If teams haven't clocked on, like his debut and 1st few games he did fine..... It all dried up for a reason. If he wasn't so one footed he would be exceptional no doubt. He needed to have been coached out of it when young, he hasn't, it limits him. 4 goals - 0 assists in 15 total matches. It's the lack of assists as a winger due to his inability to go to end line and serve a ball even a small % of the time. He is great left footed, tracking and helping out. His pressure is good. If he can learn to go to end line and cross even 10% of the time on ball, he would be world class. I can envision Ten Hag getting him and front line running more switches. Garnacho and Rashford weak footed ability to go to goal line is great example of the danger it creates to defenses. And with Weghorst it will be critical to get service from wimgs. Antony just needs a small adjustment/improvement.

@Ewerton Costa there were plenty of opportunities in one game let alone last 3 where Antony had loads space to attack right footed and be in on goal and didn't. Similarly you're blind if you missed his ignoring of a simple cross in last match with 3 men within 8 yards of goal. You have to be able to keep defenders guessing. I'm not asking him to go 50/50, but he should be able to send a right footed ball in 10% of time of its there or take advantage of easy balls behind to his right foot. You've also seen the easy misses right footed in first few matches. Awkward shooting. He has top tier potential but I'm not protecting an 85M Brazilian start who starts for Manchester United. Not a child

It’s easy to say that if he works harder in his right foot and on being able to go past players in the outside he’d be a better player, but even at age 22 I worry that a lot of habits are baked in and hard to change. That said, ETH has been able to get better performances out of a number of players this season compared to previous seasons, so I’m not writing Antony off at all.
