if you are including Marathi sairat,you should have included Ray's films too. They potray caste and class really realistically in my opinion,without any false sense of hope

One of the class disparity that has I haven't seen a lot can be the romance of a upper-middle class family(but lower CASTE) and a lower middle class family(but upper CASTE). This brings a conflict on both side traditionalism as well as modern. Please someone suggest if there such a film

But they can't show lower CASTE family as upper middle class. It'd put a hole in their reservation scheme

@@jashanpreet7888 exactly that should be shown, because that is a real thing. Couples face this issue, so it would be a nice story a middle class brahmin girl and a higher class lower caste guy(I can't think of any examples)

Being brought up watching Bollywood cinema and then being introduced to malayalam cinema made one thing clear. Bollywood to me seems larger than life (usually unrelatable sparing some gems) but malayalam cinema relatively thrives more on storytelling thats more or less part of the social fabric. Now, in both cases, the caste conundrum exists and yet, malayalam cinema seems to do better (in my view) every now and then. I wonder how Swaddle would explore the malayalam contemporary for this video.

unfortunately since the 60s our mindset has remained that of being "saved" by heroes and others fighting to bring the change, instead of changing the world ourselves and standing up ourselves. And it does not help that most commercial films push this narrative too instead of promoting the idea of united strength 😢

Not really.. ex was from lower middle class but upper caste. Rejected me on the basis of being from a different caste, I come from a better class. Brahmin complex, I guess💀

I think this was criticism of main stream Bollywood. Because filmmakers like Pankaj Kapoor, Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap have always tried for inclusion. Caste and class based love story of Bollywood:- Masaan. Class based drama :- Gangs of wasseypur, City lights, Religion based love story :- Ranjhana And I am sure there are many more realistic representations in Bollywood.

I like reading The Swaddle. However, to me, the film criticism seems rife with "holier-than-thou" vibes. Nobody argues that Bollywood has made films like 'Parasite' or 'Roma.' But the exploration of class divide has been a theme since 'Aawara', 'Mughal-e-azam' to 'Dev-D'. While caste and class intersect and bollywood has not even mentioned the interesection, a casteless- lower class (lol) has given us fairly subversive scenes (the films ultimately validate the social hierarchies through their endings). Even through this quagmire, Mirch Masala, Masaan, Dev-D and even a Dulhe Raja shine. Up your game, Swaddle.
