GTO stands for; "Gran Turismo Omologato”! ! ! And I was Privileged to purchase a 1964 2 door hardtop GTO, Tri Power, 4 speed, Posi, bought at Royal Oak Pontiac, in Michigan! They performed their Royal “Bobcat” Treatment (on the motor) before I picked it up, IT was King in North Jersey for 3+ years! ! ! When I sold it to my best man, it had a 421 cubic inch in it, with Tri Power, and 4.33 Getz Rear! It was Dynamite! ! !

What happened to our cars after we grew up and got rid of them. I bought a '69 Hurst Olds when I went in the Air Force in 1969 to become a s*hot pilot . 455ci, then I added a Holley spread bore 800 cmf double pumper carburetor, 120 degrees of overlap cam, 4.88 rear end, air shocks in the back, and a set of headers by Ed. And with slicks, 11.8s quarter mile on a track. With my G60 street tires, I could beat everything shade tree including a 440 six-pack. But I never, never beat anything with a 426 hemi, never.

My parents bought a new 66 GTO, I was only 6 or so, man when dad would bang that thing through the gears you'd be just pinned to the seat, we'd be laughing so hard, my mom would be smackin dad and yelling Deeick, she always said his name different when she was mad, we only had that car a year or two, mom hated the clutch, too stiff, made her poor little leg tired, hard to drive in the winter, I wish I had more pull back then, I would have that car today, really good memories though.

As a 19-year-old college student in 1967 I had a '65 GTO convertible, 389 ci, 4-speed with Tri-Power (3 deuces), Maize yellow. And two years later I traded it in for a brand new 1969 GTO convertible, 400 ci, 4-speed, 4-barrel, turquoise blue with white interior and black dash! It was gorgeous. But as an adult I always wanted a '67! Classic body style!

GTO stands for: Grand Turismo Omolgato in Italian (Grand Touring Homologated in English). For a car to be homologated (approved) for a certain class of racing usually 100 of the cars had to be available for purchase by the public. This was established by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), the governing body of auto racing internationally.

It is Italian, Gran Turismo Omolgato. The Ferrari had a 250 GTO. The idea of a homologated race car is that of sharing production parts with limited production vehicles to help them meet certain race regulations. Essentially, a minimum number of these vehicles had to be produced and offered for sale to the public.

...and yet, no matter how many times I enter "Gran Turismo Omolgato" into Google Translate, it says it is SPANISH. However, the engish translation is literally the same phrase. However, if I change the spelling slightly to "Gran Tourismo Omolgato", the country of origin changes to GREEK and the english translation becomes "Grand Tourism Omolgato". If I make one more spelling change and enter "Gran Tourismo Omologato", it retains the Greek country of origin, but now the english translation has changed to "Grand Tourism Certificate". Italian NEVER comes up as a country of origin and if I change it to Italian, the translation never changes on the English side. It's always been my understanding that "GTO" originally meant that the car was certified by whatever European racing commission to be suitable for "Grand Touring" style racing. I'm now wondering that, since Pontiac got that "GTO" name from an Italian car maker, and because to our American ears, the phrase sounds "Italian", that is why we've always believed it to be an Italian phrase.

The story in some car magazine early at the introduction, told by a GM executive in sales or else engineering, was that it was meant to be GT for grand touring. A secretary made an error and typed instead GTO. The executives in charge liked the sound of it so well that they left it. Then Chrysler copied this with a change to avoid the trademark naming a model GTX. Maybe like Chrysler, GM originally didn't mean to use the full Ferrari "GTO" name based on Grand Turismo Omolgato.
@rayc.13963 ай бұрын
Grand Turismo Omolgato, that was the official but GTO really stood for gas, tires and oil, they were kinda hard on all 3.
@MichaelWysocki-ks5xt3 ай бұрын
What made GTO a legendary car was while Chevelle had a 3:30 to 1 ring and pinion gear ratio and Lemans had the same, the real GTOs came with a 3:90 to one rear axle gear ratio. A whole half of a turn more of the driveshaft to the wheels. That is why a LeMans with a 389 tri- power and 4-speed was a very fast car and a GTO with 389 tri-power and 4 - speed could pull the front wheels off of the ground.

When I was 6 or 7 years old I can remember sitting on the curb watching our teen aged neighbor kid painting the thin whitewalls red. I can also remember asking him what GTO spelled as I read it off the quarter panel. He told me GOAT. I was 11 or 12 years old until I realized he was faking red line tires and GTO didn't spell goat. That was 59 or 60 years ago.
