Who is the Rose Parade's "best band in the parade?"

Why does it say at the beginning that only 1 high school band is invited to march when there were several high school bands in the parade? I'm so confused. Not taking anything away from these kids' talent and endurance but wouldn't it be expected that the largest city in the area (and country) would send one of their biggest bands?

the key is EVERY year - from what I understand most schools have about a 4 (I think) year “cooldown” before that school is allowed into the parade again, but the honor band is by audition and thus participates every year

The best band was the Kyoto high school band..they put everyone to shame These young kids are way better than any band in the rose parade..

Love the kids and appreciate their talent, but let's be real; whenever an HBCU band or that yellow and black Japanese band is in that parade, they are clearly the crowd favorite and best bands.

Tachibana high school band was and is the best in the parade..Kyoto Japan ..so young and so disciplined..they are awesome .their Parents and all of japan should be so proud..

Do you think any of the others have the discipline and the stamina ase these young people..heck no..what they go thru is amazing..they love music and they work very hard..proud of them .I will be donating to this school..

It really depends on what criteria you use to define "best." The LAUSD band is certainly the biggest. And by virtue of their size, certainly the loudest. It's also easier for them to participate because they all come from the area. They don't have a long bus ride or flight to catch over land or ocean. I don't have a concrete criteria as well. BUT....to me the best band is the one where after they pass, I feel like, "Wow! Now THAT was a marching band!!!" And, I'd want to see them again and again.
