My best year in my pro baseball career 2007 when in the beginning of the season i hurt my left shoulder. Making miss 1 month , i did rehab and strength on my left shoulder and that got me a really good year I ended up on the big league roster at the end of the year . I didn’t know why that was my best year until i retired and learned about bottom hand dominant ! I was a right handed hitter.

Also, my best friend was in an accident before we were in Jr High and lost most of his right hand (his dominant hand) He was the designated hitter for varsity as a 5ft 8 105 lb 8th grader. Absolutely crushed the ball. When I watched a video of yours for the first time, I immediately knew you were right, having observed my buddies success. He was also a fantastic golfer.

Interesting ideas. I think this video illustrates your philosophy well, and I can see how this style would "slingshot" more body momentum into the ball. However, my concern would be a loss of barrel accuracy and greater frequency of popups and easy fly balls, unless u get a chance to really practice the heck out of this Griffey style swing. I recently switched to a more "handsy / wrist snappy" style where I really incorporate my hands forward into the swing as I see exactly where I am taking them at contact (I call it my Tony Gwynn style), and it has increased my line drives while decreasing my popups, even if it has possibly come at a slight loss of power.

I would not recommend that kind of swing as it really decreases power too much. But glad you feel it's working for you.

I think part of the reason the reason this method produces power is the use of the large back/rear delt muscles in a long lever position. Cal Ripken has a video out hitting short toss with just bottom hand.

So far there has been demonstrations for the front and back arm seperately, would you be able to demonstrate swinging with both hands, not letting go after contact?

Good news, it took me a couple weeks but it is now apparent that your “swing” and Schenk’s are the same thing with only one difference. We experimented with it and it’s working very well now for us.

@@theswingmechanic If you change the initial loading portion/front arm compression, the Teacherman swing becomes the swing you recommend. It took me awhile to get my little there but, it's really something to watch now.

Coach does the front shoulder open sooner in a back arm swing.. I have noticed our varsity players hang back and their front shoulder opens early. The use Treachman concept of staying back and finishing high. I do not believe that you try train the finish. With proper sequence the result will be good extension through the contact and a good finish is the result.
@theswingmechanic

The idea behind conventional instruction is that the front shoulder DOESN’T fly open too early. But it doesn’t really work that way. It’s impossible to swing without opening the front shoulder. And that’s ok. Opening the front shoulder is not bad.

The Miami (OH) softball team has 100 HRs this year, averaging 2.94 per game. They have about 20 remaining games scheduled (more if they make a run) so they're on pace for 159 total. Back in 2010, Hawaii set records with 158 HRs and HRs/game with 2.39. I believe the total was broken by Oklahoma back in 2021. But Miami looks to beat Hawaii's HRs/game record. My point/question is...what are they teaching at Miami? Sure, the two top HR hitters in the NCAA are there. And they average a HR every 4.46 & 4.61 at bats. But that's significantly better than their career average of every 10.33 & 7.72 at bats. Prior to becoming the Miami head coach, Kirin Kumar was an assistant at Virginia Tech. And VT is 3rd in HRs (72) this year. Jenna Golembiewski & Karli Spaid are the two girls killing it for Miami BTW.

Jamie I am going to use this clip to see if I can instill change in our varsity hitting instructor. I was in no way a great ball player but enjoy the game and still coaching at the age of 77. I used the old fence swing drill which I have always felt a more flat bat path starting in 1900's . I think it was part of Mike Epstein's instructional series. The back arm approach has to led our varsity players chicken wing and in and out of the zoen quickly. I refuse the back arm approach and hitters have great success. I use a lot of pro player slow motion video to give credibility to the front arm technique. You need question anything you say.

Correct 👍. Front arm is power. Back arm is stability. The front arm is like the engine and the rear arm is like the steering wheel, both parts of the same vehicle.

What do you think has more power? A person reaching back with their lead arm and backhanding someone in the face or a person pulling back with their rear arm and punching someone in the face?
@tcab400
@tcab400 2 ай бұрын
@@christopherb8098not an apples to apples comparison. Go grab the bat with the front arm and swing as hard as you can with just the front arm. Now go and grab the same bat and swing as hard as you can with the just the back arm. It’s not even close really. The front arm generates far more power.
@christopherb8098
@christopherb8098 2 ай бұрын
@@tcab400 I certainly see your point, but to generate power like that in the swing you would have a disconnected, long, upper body dominate, all for nothing, nonadjustable swing. In my personal opinion, what feels right to me, is that my lead arm is directing where I want the barrel to go. Absolutely it is also creating bat speed, but my rear arm/top hand is what is turning the barrel and causing the whip as you punch the barrel through the ball out to extension and follow through.

@@tcab400 kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6HKeXWwjteJgposi=qGirD7jvNfVS7XAF At the 30 second through 35 second mark is where I see the top hand turn the barrel with a punching motion that whips the barrel through the ball
@christopherb8098
@christopherb8098 2 ай бұрын
@@tcab400 A clearer way to explain the point I was trying to make with the back hand slap vs punch would be to stand as you normally would with a bat, swing and hit a boxing heavy bag. After that switch your hand position on the bat and hit the bag again. The result would make it evident that your power comes from the top hand position which turns the barrel against the bottom hand acting as the guide/lever point. If you used your lead arm in the top hand position it would exaggerate the upper body shoulder dominance I’m talking about if a hitter cues too heavily on the lead arm for power.

Freeze the video at 1:42. The difference is in where the barrel turn occurs. You and Teacherman are probably after the same result, but just have a disagreement about the root cause. Kinda like looking at different ends of the same monster kinda scenario.

@@ericlovig8761I won’t speak for Jamie, but from what I have seen, Witt Jr has a swing where he drives his hands pretty hard, in other words his hands are not getting the momentum of his hips and body rotation. They are pushing forward ahead of his hips. He is a very good young player l, but will not reach his power potential with his current swing

Jaime, with the lead-arm swing, do you do anything differently to address being on plane with a pitch?
@theswingmechanic
@theswingmechanic 4 ай бұрын
The getting on plane thing is misunderstood. Ok won’t get into that. Anyway, I refer to it as slotting or flattening the barrel. And the lead arm swing is the best way to do that. It happens naturally.
