For people who don’t know what AAVE is: AAVE is a vernacular specific to black Americans. No not all black American people use AAVE, but many black Americans do use it. I definitely understand why people are offended. Steph Curry is a black American. These are words and phrases that are apart of AAVE. It’s almost as if they are using these terms with him because he is black. *I doubt this was their intention.* Personally, No I do not think Mark or Johnny meant to offend with this video. Like you and many other people, I don’t think they even understand AAVE. Mark is from Vancouver, Canada which does not have many black people. Additionally, Johnny is from Northbrook, a suburb of Chicago, which is less than one percent black. I doubt there was malice or harm intended with this video. No, AAVE is not slang. It’s an entire vernacular. Yes it’s commonly (mis)used by people because they don’t understand the concept of AAVE and many people like emulating black Americans. I hope this clears things up!

I didn't even realise that the words used here were AAVE until I read the comments. As an Asian-Canadian myself, I've been using these words thinking it was slang. I never had malice, and I'm sure that goes for the boys as well. Picking up something new daily!

I'm black and I've only heard about this since the whole BLM movement. I personally don't care, I've had plenty of non black friends speak to me in AAVE, I took no offense, it was funny and it was more comfortable for me to talk to them because I didn't have to switch accents. It was just overall more convenient for me and it gave me an opportunity to make them the butt of the joke. I respect people who sees this as a problem, even though I do think this is a load of bull because even normal slang is seen as unprofessional. Nowadays everything done against black people is seen as racist and it's uncomfortable for me because I don't want people to be uptight around me thinking that I'm gonna play the race card all the time.

People at my school speaks like this they’re Indian, Asian, Black and Caucasian. I guess it’s just idk maybe you get influenced after hanging out with the people around you? Or watching videos on KZbin some people speak like that so you get influenced ?? But none of us mean to sound like we are Black because we all respect them. Just wanted to get that out there because from my view it was normal because I grew up with friends around me speaking like that or I grew up watching videos or KZbinrs speaking like that.

To make it clear and simple, the problem is that they want him to learn the slang to talk to Stephen which is not normal. They should just make him learn some English world. As an asian if someone made ignorants comment about my culture I would also feel the need to call them out cuz the ignorance is sickening. So let us just agree and list to what black NCTzens have to say.. keep liking their comments so more people can read stuff related to AAVA and prolly NCt themselves EDIT: plus a remainder its not black people's job to fucking educate. What johnny and mark did isnt something which should be dismissed as ignorance and forgotten. If black people say something listen to them rather than arguing with them!

@Dementia Hawkins wait I’m South East Asian, and I just recently learned about AAVE because of this video. I’m familiar with the words cu’z it’s widely used on the internet, especially on twitter, so I thought it was just an English slang terms. So we (non-black) people can’t use those words?
@deebrown98322 жыл бұрын
@@juliascurato4031 unfortunately, a lot of American slang terms, and pop culture in general, are derived from African American culture and have been taken and made mainstream through appropriation without giving Black Americans due credit. So in theory, a lot of words and terms like "no cap" can be viewed as cultural appropriation and offensive. However, I think in this case (at least in my opinion and what I've been seeing a lot of other Black fans saying) is that the blaccent combined with those terms was what made it so hurtful. They purposefully changed the tone of their voices and syntax in order to imitate AAVE, even if we ignore the vocabulary they used. The fact that they put on a blaccent to simulate how to talk to Steph Curry, an African American man, was wrong. They probably wouldn't have done that if they were teaching Chenle to communicate with a non-Black star.
@layla-83693 жыл бұрын

@heyjojo79193 жыл бұрын
@@niniecle There's videos on KZbin that do in depth explanations on what it is that can explain it better than I can, but I'll try and keep it short. AAVE stands for African American Vernacular English. It is an actual dialect that is recognized by professionals. People often will wrongly equate it to broken English but it actually has it's own grammatical rules which is why it's known as a dialect. It is mostly used within Black American communities (Not every Black Person speaks this way though, and even sometimes Non-Black people who have close relations with Black people who speak AAVE may speak it themselves, or if they grew up within Black communities they might speak that way. This is one of the only way it would be considered okay to speak that way, because people can't help how they were raised. To my understanding, Johnny and Mark did not grow up within Black communities). It is highly offensive for Mark and Johnny to try to teach someone to speak this way to a Black person because it insinuates that the Black person won't understand them if they talk the way they normally talk. Also, Stephen Curry doesn't even use AAVE. It's prejudice, and ignorant. And I'm very disappointed in them, being a Black fan myself. It would be like me trying to talk to them with a stereotypical East Asian Accent when I know very well they will be able to understand me if I talk the way I normally talk. Not to mention they didn't use AAVE correctly, which only proves that they have no close relations with Black people who speak it, and that they didn't grow up in Black communities.

The way that even Ten called both Mark and Yangyang out for speaking in this way (AAVE) how the hell are you about to tell me the American/ Canadian members don't understand why its wrong. The other way round it would have been offensive right if I had spoken in the stereotypical Asian accent and communicated to one of the members in that way, assuming that they wouldn't understand if I spoke normally. The fact that Stephen doesn't even speak in this way shows a lot these stereotypes are not okay really and what upsetting is the fact we get called oversensitive when we even mention stuff like this as though if it was done the other way round everyone would have dragged us through the mud - and rightly so Don't follow your faves blindly and educate them when they're wrong, the way you guys infantile them and act like they don't understand anything and cant acknowledge their mistake really disgusts me Don't act like they don't understand what's wrong about this - they do Don't tell us how to react because if your not black you have absolutely no say in this matter I hate how we called oversensitive and dramatic when we talk about these type of issues stop belittling us and making us feel like we can't speak up when someone makes a mistake. I understand that they most likely didn't mean malice or harm by this but it still doesn't take away the fact it is offensive. EDIT: if you guys wanna do some research or want to understand why this is wrong pls take the time to watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIDKfHxqhrN6orc

@@munashka5699 I don't agree or disagree it's not something to have an opinion on, its a fact that these words were first used by the black community. Normalizing a way of talking instead of putting a stereotype on everyone who talks like that. @@hopeyoung8346 AAVE stands for African American Vernacular English and some of the slang words Mark and Johnny were using were AAVE. Most African Americans don’t even speak using AAVE, even Stephan Curry, that’s why it’s disrespectful that they were tryna talk to him like that just cuz he is a black man and they think it’s the cool way of speaking. It’s as if they think Stephan Curry can’t understand regular English. But the thing is, Mark and Johnny probably dont see a problem with what they are doing because they don’t know what AAVE is, they just think it’s a cool way that black people, especially portrayed in the media, speak. @@chhengkhema6250 ok first of all, you’re saying that you’ve seen a lot of non blacks using AAVE, as well as NCT (particularly johnny and mark). just because YOU’VE seen lots of people use AAVE does NOT excuse the fact they’re LITERALLY using african american culture because it’s “fun,” “trendy,” or “aesthetic,” without even knowing the meaning behind AAVE in the first place. all that means is that you’ve seen lots of racially insensitive people. what an ignorant excuse to make in regards to ur favs. also, why is it that johnny and mark used AAVE while talking about an african american, but when they speak English together or when they do English interviews, they don’t use it?? in addition, steph curry, doesn’t even HAVE an AAVE. if someone were to talk to Mark or Johnny in a stereotypical East Asian accent, you would be saying “how racist,” which it is racist because you don’t need to talk to or about someone a certain way to have a conversation, just how it wasn’t necessary for Mark and Johnny to be talking using an AAVE when talking about an african american. you can’t say that they didn’t offend black people when the situation speaks for itself; they were using AAVE particularly because they were conversing about an african american. ik it hurts to see ur favs in controversy, but their behavior was not it and they should be held accountable

I completely understand why people are offended by Johnny and Mark teaching Chenle AAVE. From what I saw in the video I think they taught it to him so he didn’t have to write as much since acronyms are easier to write for a non native English speaker, plus for Twitter there is a word limit so I’m guessing they also wanted to keep the tweet short and simple as to not up the word count. I could be completely wrong and I’m not trying to invalidate the Black Nctzens out there, I have no right to tell you how you feel. But from what I saw in the video I think it was just to make things easier for Chenle to write. Edit: When Johnny and Mark were role playing I could see more why people were offended, but I still personally think that they were only exaggerating to make it easier for Chenle to understand because when it was Chenle’s turn to role play Johnny didn’t do the whole AAVE accent. I also noticed in some comments that some black fans didn’t know what AAVE was until a few months ago so I feel like ( or I guess I hope) that Johnny and Mark are just unaware that what they did was wrong since western culture is very uneducated about issues like this. Last note I’ve seen interviews of NCT 127 in America where the host was black and they didn’t use AAVE then, so again I just think they exaggerated to help Chenle understand, like how teachers overly exaggerate a point to help students understand it.Again Im not trying to invalidate anyone who was offended, you have every right to be offended and I do think Johnny and Mark should know what they did was wrong.
@user-jo3qe7ev8e3 жыл бұрын
Using AAVE to make people understand English easier isn't an excuse. I know that Chenle isn't fluent in English but he should learn English slowly. Chenle isn't a disabled man and his brain is fully developed, he can't use AAVE for making English simple. If he still struggles with English, he should use a dictionary and a translator to communicate. You don't know if they intentionally did AAVE to discriminate black people, you can't read their mind. You can't use AAVE no matter what. Mark and Johnny are from the west, they already know that's wrong. Stephen Curry has African blood though
