What does O/D off Mean?

Hi there! Today I'm going to show you what O/D Off (Overdrive Off) does on your ford truck. This mode is very similar to modern vehicles with their "Tow/Haul" mode, or Trailer mode. You may want to mention. When you deactivate the overdrive, the shift points in the transmission change. The PCM expects that you are towing a load. So the shifts between 1st, 2nd, third and so on, get stretched out. It’s a simple program written into the PCM. Actually works pretty good. And you will feel a stronger downshift when braking. It’s more noticeable on newer trucks, but this is where that started. Rangers are bullet proof. It’s sad to see them turned into a mini F-150 with all the bells and whistles. It’s supposed to be a cheap truck with basic functions that the first time buyer or companies can use. It’s turned into another sofa on wheels that you will never pay off.

Okay i bought a 1999 crown vic and was told to always turn off the over drive and not to go over 60 i forget to turn it off and i feel it when i start to go over 30 scared im messing up my car

If you’re driving 55 mph and above it’s best to make the overdrive icon illuminated on the dashboard. Highway speeds only. not city at all and not on hills. It helps for flat surfaces only. on a hill in overdrive off is bad. but awesome if illuminated on highways for optimum gas usage and engine.

I never tow and I like to do a constant 70mph so overdrive off button is useless at all times when you just floor your ranger everywhere bruh.

You need not worry. Just keep driving it like you are. You only need to turn the overdrive off when you are within a specific load range. I will add, if you feel your vehicle shifting constantly between gears on hilly roads at speed, you may need to deactivate the OD. This saves on transmission temperature rise. Heat is a transmission killer. Your owners manual will help you in load calculations, but they don’t always account for conditions. With snow and ice you do not want your transmission to be braking you. This can cause an accident. So use the seat feel method. You can feel what your tires are doing in your seat. Feels sloppy, your loosing traction. Firm, then you are getting grip. But don’t push that feeling with it’s ok to go faster. You maintain constant control and you will be pretty safe. I have seen people speed past, to only meet them at the next red light. What’s a few more seconds. Stay safe.

It would be my 1st time towing anything with my 2001 2 wd f150. So on flat surfaces its ok for O/D on? But say for example I'm driving to Oregon from Bakersfield, O/D off on hilly terrain? Thanks for any input. Better safe than sorry I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks.

One possible case is a malfunctioning transmission. If it’s flashing there’s a problem with your transmission as well.

Depends. If you’re going up a steep hill while towing and notice that your truck keeps switching in and out of 3rd and 4th gear, definitely. Totally on a case-by-case basis. Thanks for the comment!

Hmm. Couldn't say for certain- could be something either with the transmission, or (this is a very far-fetched guess), something to do with your wheel speed sensor? I'd have a real mechanic check it out.

I've got a 2008 F150 and in town it shifts pretty hard and is slow acceleration from stop. Going uphill it just revs up like crazy and doesn't shift up to the next gear, is that because I'm not pushing the OD button? I'm not towing anything but I do have a truck camper but it's always done that even when I had nothing in the bed at all.

Normally, you’ll never have to use Overdrive Off. When you’re towing if you notice your transmission is shifting back and forth between 3rd and 4th a lot, or you’re towing in hilly conditions, then you should use OD/OFF.

I got a question when I'm driving my E150 the transmission does back and forth 3 and 4 cause I change my transmission cause it went bad .but if I put over drive off it goes good but the RPMS is high is the ok to drive it like that ?

Sure. It’ll use more gas for sure as you’re revving the engine a little higher, but just keep it out of the redline and you’ll be OK.

Yeah when the over drive button doesn't work then there's problems 🤔 You can shift normal then OD OFF symbol stays on sometimes can be problematic for transmission they should RECALL this non sense 😠 THIS IS 💯 BS!!!!!
