Overdrive is for highway driving. If you're doing 65mph in 3rd gear, your rpm's would be high. In overdrive, you can sustain 65mph with lower rpm's and thus better gas mileage.

It's not going to make your car feel sluggish, it should do the opposite because it will prevent you from having to downshift as much so you should already be in a desired gear. When you hit the gas you'll just take off rather than downshifting then taking off

I only turn off overdrive when I’m going up a steep hill, near where I live. If you don’t make it up the hill, you will slide down the hill and into a cornfield (Indiana Check) but when I push the button, I always say the movie quote, everyone should know, “Slingshot Enganged!”

the overdrive unit will fully engage at 60Km per hour, That's 40 miles an hour american speed. When the button is pressed the transmission will down shift to third with assist of torque converter lockup if you are at or above 60 km / 40 miles per hour. This is what my 1995 Nissan Sentra dose.

It doesn't lower performance it raises performance... Keeps you in you power band. Also you would not use this on ice unless you were wanting to use your breaks less. Otherwise it will keep your rpm higher which is further into your power band making it easier to over accelerate and spin your tires

There's another reason to turn off overdrive...towing,overdrive in an automatic is actually a less durable gear than the others...i turn mine off if I'm in town and the speed limit is 30 or 35 mph because it kicks in and out...at 40mph and over i use the overdrive unless towing,and you see people towing things at 80 mph these days because they have no brains...a automatic transmission has many clutches...clutch packs that engage with hydraulic pressure..usually the overdrive clutch pack contains less,or smaller clutches and overdrive should not be used for towing anything heavy...the only automatic transmission i know of without clutches is a cvt transmission and they are nothing but problems,waiting to fail as soon as the warranty expires...

@@in7849 I believe British shorthair means that there is no clutch to separate the engine from transmission. This is right and wrong and the same time. It is right because there is a torque converter in the place of a clutch. It operates relatively the same but with fluid pressure going back and forth. Look it up. He is wrong because most modern torque converters are what they call "lockup torque converters". At certain speeds the torque converter's clutch will engage and lock together. The reason they made lockup torque converts is to reduce heat due to the turbines of each side of the converter moving at different speeds all the time, even at road speeds. By locking them together there is less friction, which means there's less heat. Anytime there's fluid pressure in any form of hydraulic then there is friction which causes heat.

If its anything like the tow/haul button, it prevents the use of your overdrive gear so you can stay more in your powerband and peak torque making hill climbs more capable especially if youre towing a load. Todays engines dont have the low end torque like the older one used to (unless its a diesel or forced induction).

Actually, throwing it into second is the best for downhill when around (30mph/50km/h ish). At motorway speeds on a modern auto, just lift your foot off the accelerator and it will automatically cut fuel off, thus you feel this engine braking effect.

I use the overdrive in my Corolla but it seems to work best on the highway. Usually I use it to slow down instead of using my breaks. It’ll just throw my RPMs way high and I’ll turn it off at the desired speed. But one thing I’ve always wondered about though.. would turning it off when hauling off at a stop, make for shorter shifts? I guess my logic is since it likes to live in higher RPMs maybe every time the car shifts, the RPMs won’t come down as much. Not sure, I’ve yet to test this out but I doubt it, I’m sure I’m using the overdrive feature incorrectly even on freeway. 😂

it's like down shifting on a manual transmission car. if your want to pick up speed you downshift a gear, it's like driving a 10 speed bicycle if your cruising in a certain gear and your coming up to a hill, you downshift to a lower gear so it will be easier to get up the hill, your going to have to pedal more times but they will require less power to get you through the hill. on a automatic car it feels wierd to some people because they are not used to it but it actually makes the car more responsive if you accelerate, if you just cruise around with it feels like your engine is over working. so it's best to use it when your ready to accelerate.

That's not what he said though, he said overdrive being OFF makes the car sluggish, not overdrive ON, which is correct. It's true that you will get a noticeable boost in acceleration if you turn it off but it will also decelerate much more quickly and any attempt to coast from pure momentum will be very rough because you're locked at a higher gear ratio. Fuel efficiency will also take a hit. .

@@666cowboy69 I do frequent towing with my 1994 f250 with a 4 speed that already gets 10 mpg as a rating from the factory floor. I never really fiddle with the overdrive on mine, mainly because I can pull two or more cords of wood up a decent hill without the transmission downshifting. But I'll educate you a little bit on what you can use overdrive for. First of a, when it's really snowy and the roads are packed with slippery ice and snow, I started keeping my overdrive off. Usually you never attempt at going over 40 mph in those conditions anyway. But I've experienced my truck shifting into 4th gear and spin out going 40 mph. The higher gear ratio (for faster travel speeds) and the torque produced from my 7.4l engine caused it to spin out when I was barely on the gas. Another use for overdrive is when you're pulling something through hills and you get on the highway right where there's plenty of hills. Turn off overdrive because if the truck decides to upshift into a higher gear then it's really annoying because you'll lose torque for climbing the next hill. Happens to me when I'm on my way home from cutting a shit ton of firewood. I wouldn't get in the habit of using it to slow down. Though it's not much, it can slowly wear things down, and it's unnecessary. Though it's unlikely, but still. That's what the brakes are for. But the overdrive button is for road conditions and efficiency when pulling, whether it's up a hill as a car or a truck with a load.

lol Overdrive is just for highway driving 55mph and up, Drive is for city driving conditions 35 mph and under also you get access to engine braking so you don't wear your front brakes from constant stopping, D1 is for max engine braking and towing. you can also use it for steep hills but you only have access to 1st gear.

OD on makes the OD gear available and OD off makes the OD gear unavailable. Why would you want to have your OD gears unavailable? When you are going up a steep hill and need more power. Other than that you can just keep OD on and it doesn't make a difference at lower speeds it just makes the extra gears available when you need them.

It is harmful to the transmission to turn off Overdrive while in motion, the only time you should every turn that switch off is if you are in park and you are towing something. i have personally seen this setting nuke transmissions because people thought it was a quick way to downshift.

If u mean not to push the button then yes good idea. If you mean to always push the button then no. Overdrive /off button is for engine braking mainly it puts the car in a lower gear then ur currently in producing higher rpm. So when you are braking you don’t need to press hard on the brake pedal to slow down. That doesn’t mean press it every time u need to slow down. Its for if ur going down a steep hill in traffic and you don’t want to push hard on the brakes and want better control going down. Personally I think it’s really bad for your transmission to use it. Its putting it to the max all of a sudden and it can be easily used in the wrong manner or unintentionally cuz the button is so close to ur hand on the gear shifter. Look in your owners manual it will give you a lot more insight into the od /off on ur particular vehicle. It’s also very informative about everything with ur vehicle even things u didn’t no u had.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape. And I just realized that I don't have that big old stick it was just about rubbed off but I saw the O / d on the handle that I used to change gears I don't know what the name of it is okay. But either way all I had to do was click it who knew that there was a button on the top

Highway ON so you can go past 3rd gear City OFF since you stop and go but i personally would leave it on all the time .the damage it does is so small youll never notice. Engines are made so well theyll never damage themselves that way thats why thr button is there and overdrive is automatically set when you turn the car on

1:42 this January I pressed my over drive button to off while going up a hill bc my car was fluctuating between 3rd and 4th gear when I turned it off my rpm shot up and felt sluggish so I turned it back on then my cel came on in my car and I immediately got a p0740. pressing that button was my biggest mistake ever. any ideas on what happened? car still runs fine. downshifts perfectly and goes into every gear besides 4th.

sounds like od is for when hauling or going uphill. Not for basic regular use. it feels smoother w/o it on on regular roads which I figure would save more gas. when on it has more power, torque, get up , and that's using gas. amni right?

Thank you much for the video. Ok, smart guys. Who can tell me, to a woman with blonde hair, why this stupid OD button needs? I just got a lot of nerves by accidentally pushed it while driving. And this happened after five-year driving my favorite Nissan Murano. I know right now that no problem with my car, but I am still shaking over. I twin o/drive off when get over speed 60k then twin it off the revs drop down. When doing 100km with O/D off only doing 2 rev have it on it 3 or 4 reve on rev counter

joblessalex Did you figure out why your truck was doing that? I have a 2007 Nissan Frontier and I tested turning my O/D off because I’ve been noticing a rumble around 1500rpm while O/D is on. Doesn’t matter if I’m going 35mph or 60mph it still makes that grumbling until I move past or below that 1500 rpm. To my surprise it doesn’t do it when it’s off. Makes me want to drive with it off.

Hi guys my nissan sunny ex saloon 2001 blinks 16times OD light and during start off it moves fine but after a min or two later I feel that the car is stuck in one gear . The car utilizes much power to move forward and also the rpm will not go beyond 3000 rpm. If anyone has any solutions for the above issue raised please advise me ?

My 07 Altima had a CVT. It was useless. These newer Nissan's have no gears. It's a pulley and belt in the transmission. It's a continuously variable transmission. No stepped gears. It may mimick gears but it's not a traditional automatic by ANY means

PLATINUM I understand, but I'm pretty sure people in Europe shift their whole lives, many of them throughout old age, my father before he passed got into an accident and messed his back and shoulder up, he was 56 and was still driving stickshift up until his accident, I'm only 21 but I've been driving stickshift for about 6 years now, its all I've driven, and alot of that time I've been driving in Los Angeles, and to end that, I own a stick shift, Nissan skyline R32 and I've driven in LHD traffic legaly, with a RHD vehicle, for some years now, but it's up to personal opinion I guess.

Id leave OD off all the time unless you are way on a hill or in snow
