One of the most important terms in scripture to understand. An indictment on the modern Church or not knowing and worse still, not caring to teach these important terms.

it's like satisfaction for our sin... it's satiating God as an acceptable payment if you will

The wrath of God no longer abides on us who have repented and believe in Jesus the Christ

if someone is 'propitious' toward another, they are being 'merciful' or 'kind' Romans 3:25 shows God offering Christ on the cross as a propitiation on behalf of sinners -- so anyone who places trust in The Lord's sacrifice is granted to be at peace with God, who becomes to them merciful and kind; when formerly He had nothing but wrath for their Sin

Substitute is the meaning!

Man atones for his sin through his sacrifice that is acceptable and God is propitiated. Brother Sinclair did not define the word. To propitiate means to please or appease. That is what Christ's sacrifice does toward God. Toward man, His sacrifice makes atonement.

Honest question: atonement is an Old Testament concept while reconciliation as New Testament. Before the cross, atonement looking forward to Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. We look back, we have a new covenant. Seems important??

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

I understand propitiation but don't really understand expiation

Expiation- the removal of sin-the obstacle to the relationship between God and human beings. Or absolve, amend, appease, atone, correct, excuse, forgive. The idea of the sacrificial defect-less animal placing our sin on the animal and that animal being sent out in the wilderness far, far away with our sin. (a picture of complete forgiveness for the sinner)

"What does “propitiation” mean? Kind Sir...I had pondered this man-made "euphemism"...for a very long time... So, I finally went to the Web and tried to get an understanding of what it means. But as usual when doing that; one gets many different answers. Sad, but OH so True. So I copied one answer below in..."Propitiation - Wikipedia" About 784,000 results (0.43 seconds) Writing in the New Bible Dictionary, Morris states that "Propitiation is a reminder that God is implacably opposed to everything that is evil, that his opposition may properly be described as 'wrath', and that this wrath is put away only by the atoning work of Christ." To which I say, "HOGWASH!". Because... "Christ": which is Jesus...is the name of God. Thus all three means: the ONLY true God Almighty. Thus, to say that Jesus (The "Christ" meaning "Messiah" in Hebrew. But "Savior" in English) could NOT "atone" for God. For they both are ONLY one being. Amen. Praise Jesus Holy Name! So what really is propitiation? Simply: it is Jesus "paying" (atoning or propitiation) for ALL of our Sins (except the Un-Forgivable* Sin). Period! Nothing more. Just a big word, meaning what Jesus did to Save us. Praise His Holy Name. And in the following: are 4 verses where it appears in the bible... Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. And in some other versions; they say this one is propitiation; in Heb 2:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. ("Sin" and "iniquity" are basically the SAME thing) End of Story and I rest me case... ...In any case kind Sir, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN! * Refusing to believe IN, and worshiping, the only true God Almighty (whose name is Jesus for the last 2,000 yrs)

Pat, you have to believe in the Jesus found in Scripture. Your " Jesus" is not that Jesus. Jesus is not three manifestations. Repent before you die.

In 1 John 2-2 propitiation for OUR sins and the sins of the WHOLE WORLD.. The word WORLD is the Greek KOSMOS.. Kosmos is only used in the bible for the Jewish old covenant people; and it is not used in reference to anyone else in the bible. In Roms 3-25 Paul says propitiation was for previously committed sins; and that means for the sins of the Jewish old covenant people who transgressed against the covenant of God Heb 8-15. The phrase the WHOLE WORLD in 1 John 2-2 is referring to the 10 lost tribes of the Jewish old covenant people who were scattered into the Gentile nations. According to the pattern of the scriptures it includes the Edomites; who were the descendants of Esau who were also born into the old covenant; but sold his birthright.. Which means he followed other gods. The Pharisees were the descendants of the Edomites. The word propitiation was not properly explained in this video. Jesus was sent by God to seek favour with the lost sheep of the house of Israel in Matt 15-24; on behalf of God; who desired that the Jews who were following false gods who be SAVED from PERISHING in Jerusalem in AD70; this is what Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus in John 3-16. Paul makes mention of this very thing in 1 Tim 2-3-4 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour. V4 Who desires all men to be SAVED and come to the knowledge of the truth. The truth is that Christ Jesus was Gods Messiah; Gods propitiation so that the Jewish old covenant people would be SAVED from the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70. The word SAVED in Roms 10-9 and Eph 2-8-9 is also referring to being saved from PERISHING in AD70. JESUS SAID IN MATT 15-24 THAT HE WAS *ONLY SENT TO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.* * Jesus was not sent to any other nations.. He was not sent to Americans; Chinese; Japanese; India Europeans; Africa.. because they were not members of the old covenant; and they did not have the law of Moses; AND SIN WAS NOT IMPUTED WHEN THERE WAS NOT LAW. So there was no need for Jesus to die for people whos sin was not imputed. Pastor; preachers; theologians and others who claim to be anointed by God in the five fold ministry are all just anointed sin managers; and when they are not teaching the scriptures according to proper exegesis they are of no value to the will of God in the kingdom of God. Wakey wakey from your deep slumber of sin managers; so the saints of God can be blessed when they hear godly revelation.
