Christians in Sport

Күн бұрын

Thousands of Christians around the UK play sport every week. Just think of the numbers involved: 15.74 million adults play sport weekly - that’s about a third of adults in the UK. The number is higher in the young-adult bracket where 55.2% take part in at least one session of sport a week, and even higher among 11-16 year olds where it is 86.6%!
But how many of these Christians playing sport are Christians in sport? In other words how many Christians don’t just play sport but actually see that their sport and faith are integrated? Not separate areas - “I go to church on Sunday and play sport during the week” - but integrated - “I play sport as part of a whole life view of worship”.
To see how someone can move from being a Christian who plays sport to being a Christian in sport let’s see what the Bible says about sport.
It may be a surprise to you, but sport is part of God’s good gift of creation. Sure, human beings are the ones who invent sports, but where does our playfulness come from? The creativity, the desire for human relationship, and the instinctive desire to play that all people, of all ages, across all cultures have, are all part of what it means to be made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
God is the Creator and so being made in his image makes us creative with the talents to strike a ball, see a pass, or swim quickly. Equally God is a relational God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and so our desire to play with others pushing them on in competition comes from him. Sport is not some area outside of God’s good creation, it is an integral part of it, a gift to be enjoyed to his glory.
“But” I can hear you say, “if sport is a gift from God, then why is it often so bad, full of drugs, professional fouls, violence and cheating?”
Like any aspect of God’s creation, sport has been distorted from its original purpose because of our sin. Sin is not something ‘out there’ as if sport is the problem, sin is an internal disposition we all have to reject God and to distort his good creation. We use our talents to seek our glory rather than to play to God’s glory. We damage our relationships through cheating instead of playing fair. Sin infects sport just as it does every area of human life.
It is striking how much sport draws on religious words, ‘Messi the messiah’, ‘Usain Bolt the saviour of athletics’. Well the truth is there is only one messiah and saviour - Jesus Christ. God doesn’t want sport to remain tainted by sin, so he sent his Son Jesus Christ to be a substitute (a concept every sports person gets). He steps in to take the penalty we deserve, he is punished so that we can go free. He is sent from the field of play so that we can get back in the game.
Now risen from the dead Jesus Christ calls us to play to his glory. Romans 12:1-2 urges us to ‘offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship’. That means that sport is an area of life that can be offered to God as an act of worship.
Just think of the difference this makes when someone grasps that their sport can be worship - perhaps you are realising this for the first time now. God is not distant from the thrill you get when you play sport. He is not remote from the highs and lows of the competition. Your beating heart is his beating heart, your joy is his pleasure. After all he is the one who gave us the gift of sport.
So are you a Christian who plays sport or are you a Christian in sport? That all depends on the way you play. Play hard, play fair, and play to his glory - after all, it is worship.

Sport can be good and bad. It depends on if it hinders our relationship with God. Like almost everything - art, the Internet, music, it can distract us and depends on how we use it and how much we allow it to become part of our life. Examples of when sport's culture is bad or good: - if you support and admire an athlete so much that you become obsessed with him and he becomes your idol. When this athlete becomes your idol? When you think more than him or her more than you think about God. And you start behaving the same was as this athlete and wearing the same brands as well. I idolized a couple of athletes not long ago. - if you choose to watch the World cup final or Wimbledon final instead of going to the church on Sunday evening. + if the sport that you do makes you think about God and makes your relationship with Him sturdier. I found this in the last year doing 2 sports. Playing football (alone) and doing cross-country skiing. + Some athletes share the Gospel or thank God when they win leading people to faith. It all depends on how we use it.

No one steps into the playing field to lose but to win, to excel above the opponent, to compete, and with competition comes pride (l am better, stronger, faster and smarter etc) and pride was in the devil and the beginning of downfall (ISIAH 14:13-15) i mean..2 grps of devoted Christians steps into the playing field at rivalry with each other both prayed to God for victory to glorify him.. but in the end one wins and one losses, is God being bias? God is no respector of person meaning he is just (not bias) and he never changes, same forever.. then what went wrong? Are we not causing confusion (which God is not the author of..as the Bible declared) God has no pleasure what so ever in enmity but amity, let us do things that is pure in motive and action and has no intention of bringing harm to our neighbors physically and spiritually, and stop doing doing everything that has no relation to God whatsoever but are being labelled "giving Glory to God" when in reality we just want to consume it upon our lust..God bless 🙏

@@bryanstockhausen5077 Please read my first comment again. Take MJ (basketball player) for example. Does he know he is good at the sport? sure and whenever he steps on a court he will try to prove he is good but by no means has he ever called himself the greatest. There are even multiple interviews of him forfeiting this title because he wanted to respect all the great people who played before him. If you cannot as a "Fellow Israelite" figure out how to play a sport for fun and without "dominating" someone else I think you have an issue. Also, the disciples were arguing who would be greatest in HEAVEN which again how can you compare that to an NBA championship which is nothing more than a profession. You compete in your profession every day too. If you do poorly there are people waiting to take your spot in your job and do better than you and also whether you may not like to admit it or not when you are at work you know when you're a better worker than someone else but it doesn't mean arrogance until you start to act on that feeling in a bad way (which a lot of Christians do in the church, forget talking about profession). You're acting as if sports players think they are the best humans in the world and they are gods because they've won a sport. They are just extremely happy that they've done well in their profession which happens to be a sport. Also, God is one to talk about competition and sport. He literally wrestled Jacob and was losing so messed up his hip to win. Don't act like people winning a sport is equivalent to them trying to say that they are higher than God or better than other men in all aspects of life. If you actually followed sport and followed athletes you would know that is entirely not the case. Also, the world of sport is wide so you will get arrogant people but are CHRISTIANS one to talk about arrogance. There are SOOO many arrogant Christians, especially pastors and deacons who think they are better and more holy anointed than the common congregation. The entire medieval ages is bishops and clergymen high in the church using it for political power and treating common church people like scum. Come with a better argument, please 😑😑😑

No it's the fact that sports are often violent and always prideful, the bible doesn't always tell you exactly what's bad, it gives you hints, he never says masterbation or porn in bad but they are both forms of lust which is bad. Sports are violent and very prideful, which we know Jesus is against pride. Let's say it this way, do you think Jesus would be cheering and happy when the opposing team loses or gets hurt, do you think he would be happy that God's children are hurting eachother for fun?

Talus St.Germain I’m getting defensive because you’re spreading a false narrative and comparing a form of entertainment to lust/porn. You should know well that The Lord has said everywhere that lust and adultery is a sin and always will be. Pride is permitted in many aspects such as parental pride, pride in one’s work (sports) which is the opposite of sloth (part of the deadly sins). I feel you just interpret everything written in the Bible incorrectly.

@@TitaniumSlayerNinjaCopper actually I never do, it is you who interpret it incorrectly. I know this because most sports are all pride. Think of it this way, would Jesus sit and watch sports with you, yelling everytime someone on the opposing side gets hurt, you just need to watch the other video on this. I liked sports before, but had provides very good evidence that even I couldn't refuse. I am not the one misinterpreting the Bible. It is you who has a stubborn mind that can not change, even with biblical evidence. Sport is pride, in some cases work, but mostly just hurting others for your own enjoyment. what does idolizing sports look like?
@christians_in_sport
@christians_in_sport 29 күн бұрын
It's a great question, it ultimately comes down to where your heart is when it comes to sport. For example does glorifying your own name come before glorifying God? This might look like wanting to win so badly you treat competitors poorly or seek approval for your own sporting achievement from others more than you are willing to share Jesus with them. For everyone in competitive sport this will be a danger, so pray God would use you in your context of sport for his glory first and not your own, and thank him for the gift of sport every time you are about to go and train or play.

This is a bad message. Sports should not be played. You cannot play a sport without having competition. Competition is of the Devil not of God. Can anyone imagine Jesus playing soccer??? No. There's not a single good positive loving outcome that come when you play a sport or any other competition game. Rev: 3 "As many as I love I rebuke" This is what mainstream non denomination and many other churches would agree to. But bible says to be different, peculiar to be holy people. Separate from the world. Sports are of the world. Its not easy but we must be spotless.

Already in life(not just the bible and any religion) we are taught acceptance, so of course in modern society we are told to allow someone regardless of who they are, and sure the bible has a bit of mysonigy but that has Changed, in the bible we are taught to love man and woman equally, it's in the bible, and what progress or morals,my progress in life has actually been better when I believed in Christ almighty and in christianity, and my morals have been so much better because of Christianity and modernity and for many other people to, if whatever reason you cannot respect peoples beliefs, then atleast respect them for who they are, and if you are for equality, then you should respect everyone regardless of who they are and approach and respect everything in same category(whether good or bad) and that's true equality, and its very ironic that me(who is a Christian) is respecting your belief as an atheist, which according to your argument, religion has bad things which suddenly makes it bad which you are considering without even focusing on the good things about it,yet you as a person who implies that you are for equality, simply cant respect my belief, wow, people so surprise me these days, but hey, it's people, what do you expect?, best not expect anything.

Romans 12:18: “If possible, as far as it depends on you, be peaceable with all men.” The Scriptures clearly show that we are to produce the fruitage of God’s spirit such as love, peace, joy, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22,23) Professional boxing flies in the face of all such fruitage. We are also told to live our neighbors as ourselves and love does not work evil to one’s neighbor. (Romans 13:9,10) Life is a gift, so risking one’s life or hurting another person can also lead a fighter to become a manslayer. (1John 3:15)
