The biggest problem for the Watchtower in this day and age is precisely this: the internet. Up until as little as 20 years ago it was still relatively easy for the organisation to limit and control what its members could see and hear. Now anyone can go online and access information that is difficult for the church to refute. If the Watchtower is to continue it will probably have no choice but to develop Witness-only communities within which media is tightly controlled and internet access is effectively banned, except perhaps for some kind of congregational Intranet system. Within a century or two whatever remains of the JW faith will most likely resemble something like the Amish communities in the United States. No doubt many people will find this far-fetched, but from my own knowledge and personal experience of the Witness movement I cannot see it surviving the 21st century information age any other way.

I approached a cart here in Adelaide, South Australia a couple of weeks ago. I’ve done this often but this time felt empty after my experience. The folks I approached were an Elder and two older women. I was trying to be informative but I was feeding off the response from the Elder and I became confrontational. One of the sisters looked at me as if I was Satanic and said “ I will not listen to you, I’m leaving”. She didn’t leave although she got out of her seat. When I asked them to do research re 607 BCE , and told them that no historian supports that date, the Elder said “ were leaving”. They packed up their cart and drove away. I didn’t feel any kind of victory and was disturbed by the experience for days. I felt so broken for them. That level of devotion to a cult leaves me hurting for them. I at one time was one of them. I thought I am never going back there, until last week when my pregnant wife pleaded with me to go with her to the KH because elders wanted to speak to her about a letter from the society regarding pregnant women. Apparently thete is a new directive called (S-55) for elders to hound down pregnant women, and call them to the back room to prep them on how to get hold of the HLC; Getting medical insurance in order to get assistance from private hospitals that are willing to perform blood less med procedures, appointing legal reps and getting them in contact with JW legal department. This seems like coerced faith to me. If I was god I would definitely not accept that type of worship were members are told what decisions to take by their leaders.

Thank you, Lloyd, for your interesting predictions. As you suggested, it’s almost impossible to foretell what is going to happen to this religious group in the following years. As I see things, they have two choices: Either they continue promoting their views on the imminent end of the world (and that would require strengthening things like mind control, shunning, absurd rules, etc.) or they can decide to become something really different. If they opt for the latter choice, we can expect them to become something similar to the Seventh Day Adventists. In other words, a religious movement with a weird and crazy past that today doesn’t look too different from the big protestant denominations. In my opinion, becoming a much less apocalyptic group is the only way they can survive without too much damage. If they continue exploiting their followers, they way they have been doing this since the late 1800s, they´ll most probably lose everything they have accumulated so far: money, properties, followers, a system of beliefs. They simply cannot continue putting the apocalypse off indefinitely in the following years. Even their followers’ patience and credulity have a limit.

Great video! I'm German, and I think when we look at the history of Eastern and Western Germany, we might be able to predict some things. Successful people in power will never change things willingly. I believe there will be no reforms from the top down in the WTS unless the leaders are forced to implement them, either by circumstance or by law. When the Wall fell in Eastern Germany, there were two primary causes: Bankcruptcy and pressure from the people. The leaders feared they would lose everyhing if they did not give in to changes. I think it will be the same thing with the WTS. Maybe there will ne no real pressure from the members because they can just disfellowship reformers or people who express doubt, keeping things clean. But once they have no more money and the number of members sinks rapidly for a long time, the organization needs to make a choice: Keep being stuck in their ways and lose everything. Or change some things and stand a chance of survival.

JW and the 1914 problem... I'm an exJW, disfellowshipped for something I didn't do, and expertly shunned! I have a colourful history with the witnesses, and reason enough to dislike them/ seek revenge/ trash them or otherwise based purely on mistreatment. But all I ever focused on was whether they sported the "truth" as they claim. I had many issues regarding doctrine and prophecy. I told them in the 90s that moving the goal posts re the end and "this generation" would only work for so long. The current understanding is so ridiculous that I feel comfortable that it's a preamble for the next understanding which will seem more acceptable by comparison. Years ago I spoke with a historian who told me of "phantom time hypothesis", the notion that history was deliberately altered leaving us a few centuries out of balance. There are various takes on this, some put us only 150-170 years out, meaning our date of 2020 should be much lower, more like 1850 in reality. I've seen others who suggest only a few decades out, but I realised back then, that this was the JWs only hope of sticking to the 1914 ideology. As you have proven JWs think nothing of altering history and publicly opposing historians if facts don't fit their narrative. It's not a large stretch to see they could convince their indoctrinated followers that maybe Satan the Devil has misled us regarding the real date, any that deny this are in league with the Devil and gods organisation are the only ones appreciating the truth as they have fought for since Russel. You might think this is a stretch too far, however we can look at the example of people believing in the Flat Earth despite an overwhelming amount of evidence to the contrary. The growth in this belief is exponential, it's exploding online. And if it works, if they can find just the right research from someone they can risk quoting (I remember the anger I felt at the quote mining in the creation book, despite me still being in), then they're in good shape. 1914 is back on the table, and then why not 1918, 1925, 1975. All possible again. Sure they'll lose a few, but they'll gain more, people are desperate for theories like this that prove we are being conned and that God loves them... Well that's my thoughts, but I absolutely believe that if they research this and find the 'right' references, they'll realise this is their best option...

Just watching this again and got to thinking about that scripture you used on the love cooling off. Well I will say this. Since I have woke up I have met exJws that I have encountered to happy caring people ready to help and very supportive. Active Jehovah’s Witnesses on the other hand I find to be cold hearted and just unhappy people. Lacking any kind of love by shunning there families. Turning on them like wolves if you dare ask some questions. It seems the greater number that’s cooling it’s love off is Jehovah’s Witnesses.

I would really like to see Governing body members be more open instead of being so evasive like they. Their JW broadcasting is simply not good enough whatsoever because they completely control that and its a one way street Church leaders wouldnt have a problem witjh it and if this is genuinely a public ministry then come on lets have this All this evasive behaviour is wrong and makes you cringe

Lloyd, in the last two weeks I have written two emails stating my intention to disassociate. The elders keep saying they will get back to me. Then yesterday, they invite me to sit down for a shepherding call at the Kingdom Hall on Wednesday. There are many things causing me to disassociate but the kicker is the two witness rule. I’m going to record it. Is this typical in trying to disassociate? They are trying to keep me in. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You are right on the money about the blood issue not becoming so fraught in the future due to medical advances. Even now, a range of medical procedures - especially non-emergency ones - can be done without blood whereas at one time blood was “needed”. Emergency Departments, of course, are an entirely different proposition. Advances on blood substitutes highlight the absolute and utter indispensability of human blood in emergencies. There are simply no substitutes. In instances of sudden massive loss of blood volume ( e.g., industrial and/or vehicle accidents), blood refusal or non availability of rare blood types is almost always a death sentence. Strangely - or perhaps understandably! - JW organization seldom if ever acknowledges JWs high vulnerability to death in emergency medical scenarios but proceeds to talk about rare exceptions of survival. Lastly, you mention policy “”climbdowns”” (excellent phrase, BTW): Already in New Zealand, the state automatically steps in and takes over parental decision-making when medical teams deem that a child needs blood. JW parents simply accede to the state’s directives with virtually no legal fuss. We’ve had a couple of high publicity cases in the past decade in which I can almost detect relief on the parents’ part when medically necessary transfusions are state-ordered for the children of JW parents. Gone are the days when JW parents pulled out the big legal guns and/or martyred their children by kidnapping them from hospitals (the recent instance in the UK was not about “saving” the child from blood but obtaining medical procedures from another hospital in another country).

I firmly believe that any teaching can be altered. I remember telling my aunt that the flood story was a lynchpin of sorts and that if the flood failed to occur then one could not in good conscience believe in the Witness faith. She looked at me quizzically and remarked, "How come? Why would the fact that the flood never occurred mean that it isn't the truth?" After our conversation it occurred to me that many witnesses don't share my 'Reasoning book' mentality. Many Witnesses are very much like my aunt. These are ones who could obtain a degree in evolutionary biology and still fail to see the truth of evolution because the Watchtower literature denies its veracity. When your notion of truth comes from the literature you will readily adjust your reality to accord with changing light, you will convince yourself that the light gets brighter and that however odd these changes may seem they must be true, they must be true because it is Jehovah's organization and he cannot be wrong. Any doctrine can be altered without fear of losing congregants because what some of us see as foundational lynchpins are to many witnesses just window dressing that may be freely altered.

*I wouldnt't be surprised if the JW GB eventually get rid of the annual meetings **_because_** they don't want members comparing notes with each other about 'New Light' contradicting old doctrine or membership shrink or about the volume of people being shunned.* When my former cult started to experience the "internet" phenom and as a result began to shrink (and this was in 1999) -- one of the 1st things to go after the publications was the annual meetings. At the time they explained it away by saying that we should be able to get our spiritual food and fellowship with the ekklesia in _our own regions_ (aka city) with perhaps an "annual" meeting in the state or equivalent. *But what actually wound up happening was* the state level leaders just began travelling around the state and our local branch would have a Bible Study "Weekend" Also we started having "Hookup to HQ" Sundays - where local leadership was cut out all together in favor of a phone/video hookup with our International HQ. From an outsider's perspective - I believe JW's are _already_ doing something like this with the JW .org family night?? (not sure of how it is structured). Another benefit to stopping annual meetings is that regions will become that much _more_ isolated - leading them to assume that the problems with membership and their own private questions are just a product the adversary being more active in their area. Which, of course, works out great for the folks at HQ because now they have a whole new way to shame their members, extract increasing funds to 'fight the good fight' *_as well as_* add to the persecution complex. Cults become more and more insulated as the message begins to breakdown when it conflicts with the reality members see, cognitive dissonance or not. We have example after example of this. Interestingly, my old cult is still around. But it is _significantly_ smaller and less influential. There will always be a % that will never waver when it comes to their programming. Additionally, there is % that won't exit just because they don't want to give up their "status" or admit X number of years of their life was in service to a lie. So as you say Lloyd, there will likely always be JW's - the question is, will they remain a viable religion in 1st & 2nd world countries in another 40 years?

That idea about other planets is so, so interesting. So what if aliens come down, they may or may not recognize even know Jesus or Jehovah. I disagree (a bit) with Lloyd about the number of people able to live on earth. The earth is almost 3/4 water. But with if mankind in general did not have to be plagued by war, hunger, crime, etc.? We could focus our energies on technology. With all the talent around the world, and if people work together from country to country, the right technology could be conceptualized. The right technology could lead to beautiful multi-leveled underground and underwater cities.

The other aspect that no Ex-JW Activist have stated or mentioned about all of the Kingdom Hall closings and Watchtower moving towards only using JW Broadcasting, is that once you remove the Kingdom Halls, JW’s will loose a considerable amount of closeness to the organization. I think by that point most Pimo’s will leave. The Kingdom Halls are a huge part of the JW community and once that’s gone Watchtower will inadvertently loose a huge portion of their control on rank and file witnesses. Not to mention that local elders will loose a chunk of their power as well. So Watchtower May be making a ton of money on the sales of these Kingdom Halls but in a way it stands to reason that this move may not be in there favor as much as they would like to believe. Food for thought.

I think it’s interesting question because their growth is slowing down in Developed countries (as we all know). In my opinion these are two potential changes. 1: Growth in Africa, Africa is currently seeing massive growth of evangelicals religions and JWs fit into this category. It’ll give JWs numbers massive growth as Africa is projected to have over a billion inhabitants and the youngest population of the seven continents. 2: Increased shunning rules, particularly towards individuals who’ve faded. In this way they’d like to bring the faded individuals back in the fold. JWs truly believe this method works.
