How about a tier system which was mentioned on the Caribbean cricket podcast. But in my opinion, it should be like this. First division consists of 4 teams, who get to play 5 test matches against each other and a second division of 4 teams, who have to play 3 test matches against each other. A third division could be a thing too. The bottom team of their respective divisions replace the first place team from the division below. This way, you could still have the ashes and other rivalries. IND/PAK game can be played at a neutral venue

The WTC is such a favorite horse to flog for everyone. Under the current market economics of cricket, a proper league for test cricket is just not possible. Eng and Aus will play 5 test series because there's a market for it. WI and SL will not play 5 test series because there's no market for it. That rules out any plans for a uniform league where each team plays all others equal times. So, the point percentage is the only reasonable metric. The ICC is not strong enough to overrule the market and regional powers - the big 3 - and force them to play uniform number of matches. The experts keep pointing out the non-uniform number of matches, but they wouldn't want Eng to play 5 tests with WI, nor would they want to reduce the Ashes to 3 tests. They keep flogging the WTC for being a flawed league; but it is not a league. Under the circumstances, it is merely a desperate attempt to give some additional context to the dull test matches like Ind vs WI which otherwise would have even less interest. And the context is derived from the pageantry of a Final knockout match between two "Best" teams of the cycle determined under the constraining circumstances of a completely non-uniform schedule. Indians who follow test cricket do keep an eye on the WTC table because they have done well in both the previous cycles and winning the final matters to them. England might pretend to not care about it, but they will love it if they do reach the final. Does the WTC help generate interest outside the big 3 nations? Maybe not, but maybe it does to a limited extent. In its brief history, NZ has won it, SL had a solid run last time till the end with a real possibility of making the final, and SA has a good shot this time. So, it's not fair to say that it has no measure of success. Is that enough to sustain interest in these nations? Probably not. Can it get better? Of course! The point system is too flawed and needs to improve. But the percentage system is simple and understandable given the uneven roster. The FTP cycle is decided by individual boards. Until the ICC takes control over that, there would be no uniformity of the schedule even with a tier system. That does not look likely in the immediate future with the ICC largely controlled by the Big 3 themselves, and with Jay Shah taking over the ICC, do not expect anything more than just shifting the final from England to Ahmedabad.
@JustJezBeingJez2 ай бұрын
Might sound stupid but the cricket management game Cricket Captain I think has the fairest scoring system. Every league is worth 120 points. So two test series is worth 60 points for a win, three test series is worth 40 points a win, a five test series is worth 24 points a win. All draws are worth half the points of each the relevant match and then there is a percentage worked out from wins to losses/draws. There is a maximum of 6 series towards the overall score over the two year period. This way everyone plays an equal number of series for an equal share of points. Outside of this you then have series against minnow nations or extra series after those 6 do not contribute to your overall score and percentage.
@russhouldin57743 ай бұрын
Very informative. The flaw in Jarrod's model is where do players learn to play 5 day cricket? You cant just jump from white ball to test (we know that you can do vice versa). Someone has to fund 3-4 day cricket and I cant see franchisers doing that. It's the US model ignoring the fact that all US sports are short-duration. Player development is through the colleges and, for baseball, farm teams, which play exactly the same format. It remains to be seen if golf can be franchised.
@FencingOsprey3 ай бұрын
Rather than 2 WTC divisions of 6-7 test teams, a better idea would be to have two parallel conferences of 6-7 teams playing each other in 3 match series home and away over a 4 year period. The winners of each conference play a 3 test final and the last place team in each conference play a one-off match for relegation to a revived Intercontinental Cup. The Intercontinental Cup could have up to 8 teams play 4 day red ball against each each other twice at home and twice away. For example: WTC Conference A Afghanistan, India, New Zealand, Netherlands, South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe WTC Conference B Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, Pakistan, Scotland, Sri Lanka Intercontinental Cup Canada, Namibia, Nepal, Oman, PNG, Uganda, UAE, USA This would solve the two issues of the relegation worries of NZ/SL/WI and the India-Pakistan relations problem. While expanding red ball around the world. There's no need for the associates to spend loads of money on setting up a first class structure to develop players as they'll play enough red ball games against each other.

The two biggest challenges for test cricket is that it lacks a context (except Ashes, India-Eng and Ind-Aus) and lack of quality (one-sided games where home teams mostly dominate). Instead of making test cricket a bilateral agreement between two nations, why can't we have 3 nations have a triangular tournament between one of the big 3 (Ind, Eng or Aus during their cricket season at home) and other teams (that may include a low revenue generating cricket boards like srilanka, west indies or newzealand) and have a tournament spanning 5-6 test matches and a final. This could provide some sort of context (of course the test matches between non host could be a disaster in terms of revenue) and simultaneously generate some revenue for the financially weaker cricket boards. Also, it may lead to better competition because of the one-off final at the end!!

Here's imore logical model: Let the WTC matches have 3 match or 2 match series, with 3-3 series away/home in 2 year cycle (With a rule that a team should play 3 match series home+away once in that cycle). Therefore all teams will play 14 matches, counted for WTC points. All other matches as 4th & 5th test of the series of Ashes/BGT/Patoudi trophy should be limited for bilateral trophy only.

And ICC should make sure that during these 4 test matches no international match will be played among top 10-12 nations ( That's how you can diverge the mind of cricket fans and fraternity to these 4 matches ) !! When there will be no other international matches among top 10-12 nations ( In all formats ) then for a month they will have to watch those 4 test matches and that's how these 4 matches will get significance among cricket followers and all fans will have to watch these test matches for one month !! That's how test cricket can be promoted , and ICC should also make sure that in this one month there should be no franchise cricket running around as well because like that 50% of the fans will be watching and following that franchise league instead of this

The other issue is that no one and I mean no one wanted to sit and watch 8 hours of cricket for 5 days when teams like the West Indies play against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe, or New Zealand v Sri Lanka, not even the fans in the local countries. It’s only really England that is keeping test cricket alive as we can fill out grounds for 5 days (and get a regular TV audience) regardless of who we are playing and then I’d say Australia and 3rd Indian. It’s not enough for these three teams to just play each other and Indian who probably make the most money from cricket need to understand this and help out by taking a lower cut of the ICC pot so that the money can be more evenly distributed (maybe until test cricket is on a better footing) otherwise test cricket is dead.

The day matches of ipl should be played with pink ball and should be low scoring matches,as it is not watched by a lot of the population due to day time viewing so challenging cricket can be presented to tge audience with ball dominating bat for these particular games. they are all wrong. just have quarters,semis and finals every year at one spot best of 3 and let best team win. that will attract audience as it is a real deal not this hopeless point based system. have it every year in aus, eng,india,pak,srilanka,sa. it will be at best 6 weeks tournament. EVERY YEAR THOUGH. 3 TEST MATCHES TAKE 3 WEEKS AND HAVE 5 DAYS REST AND AGAIN GET BACK TO IT. ONLY FINAL 2 TEAMS PLAY MORE THAN 6 BUT ALL OTHERS DO NOT PLAY MORE THAN 6 IN MAX 5 TO 6 WEEKS. -------------- 6 WEEKS THIS IS DONE!! AND VERY VERY ATTRACTIVE. STOP ALL THE BILATERAL NONSENSE. EMPTY STADIUMS AND EVERYBODY IS A LION AT HOME THESE DAYS. WEST INDIES ARE AN EMBARASSMENT.

it will disappear or reduced to 4 max or eventually go back to square one with only england and australia playing for legacy purposes as nothing is at stake as a trophy as the format is just horrendous. an annual quarter, semis and finals best of 3 between top 8 teams was the format to go not these lame point based system. ------------- And empty stadiums wont change. india is a developing country and cant afford to waste working people wasting 5 days time which do not happen in china which is surging at bullet train speed and india nowhere to be found. ------------ the percapita of income of australia is 60k and england 65k. so they are very rich countries and during summer england want to be out and australia is a sports embedded nation with hardly any population and endless resources. -------------- india cant afford to have 5 days waste. -------------- so it will be between eng vs aus eventually as there is no market for it elsewhere. at this rate india wont catch up with china even by 2060. china continue to make tremendous progress at break neck speed and indians are wasting time watching cricket. see the problem? all our generation are culprit to this do not do same mistake again we are already fallen way behind.

Its a total nonsense WTC model. Its already the 3rd edition snd there is absolutely NO vision whatsoever by the icc or by the FMs for thr future of WTC or test match cricket. Atleast make a top 4 teams concept. Teams will certainly be motivated or inspired to really achieve something. They have all the time in the world to play N number of nonsense t20 leagues but don't have time to organise 2 SFs test matches and the Final???????

England? they are 6th in the ranking how are they a part of big 3???
@jacktomlinson11423 ай бұрын
Rankings fluctuate but the big 3 are the countries where there is significant interest in test cricket, as far as I understand. England, India, and Australia play the most test matches.

...because its hard to get tickets for English test matches whilst in India there are empty seats

@@jacktomlinson1142bro look pak team they still struggle to win 1 test match since last 3 years so it's thier fault not us they have lot of matches to play but still did not win 1 single match so what can we say on this😢
@aryamsharma85372 ай бұрын
Big 3 is related to money, not rankings or interest. These three countries are responsible for almost all the revenue.

Big three bring more money hence they got more money, they are not running charities it's business. Other boards too need to bring some money into their system instead of surviving over money they got from ICC

Why test championship final in England always. Should be one in Asia and one in different cricket playing top nation's.
@AM2K23 ай бұрын
Sell the most tickets in England - we love test cricket more than you, stadiums in Asia are empty for test matches
