Our 11 yr old daughter has asked for an artist tablet for Christmas, and she might have well asked for a star in the sky...because that's how unreachable this request seemed until I saw your video. She is the only graphic artist in the family, so with no prior knowledge, my husband and I were lost. However after watching your video, I feel much better equipped to at least start the hunt. Thank you so much!

Super helpful :D Edit: It's been a year since I posted this comment. A year since I bought a cheap tablet (XP PEN G640S). The wheel "thingie". It seems hard to find ones like this these days - though there still are a few, such as the XP-PEN DECO-03 which currently is a tad over £100 in the UK. There are a few others, but not many. For some of the Huion models it might be useful to know that there is now a real pen available - Scribo PW310, so that a sheet of paper can be taped or clamped to the tablet, and then the user simply writes on the paper. That's a different mode of operation. Some people might like that. It's not obvious whether most tablets can take different pens, though often the cost of a pen is often not so different from the cost of a tablet. I guess it depends on the product strategy and marketing.

So I started my digital art journey 6 days back. I had never done digital art before so I thought I'd opt for the cheapest option available to see if I like the experience, I bought the Huion H420. After a few times of working fine, it just starts acting up mid-drawing which is really frustrating 😖 So I am back at watching videos to choose an affordable pen tablet, because I really did love the experience of drawing digitally. This video did a really good job explaining everything in a very kind and objective manner, so thank you for that! My first tablet was an XP-Pen with display, and I wouldn't recommend it. I have a MacBook Pro, and it recently stopped working with it completely. Apparently the drive I needed to download "didn't work for the version." AKA, when I updated my computer to the latest version, there was no update to the drive to work with it, even after waiting and re-downloading it. The colors on the display didn't match up with how it looked on my computer, so I think I'll try a screenless wacom next. Thanks for the insightful video, it helped me narrow my options!

your video is useful . thank you . If you are on a budget and don't mind connecting it to a computer/laptop, XP-Pen or huion ftw. If you want to use it as a tablet to draw with your fingers, then my recommendation is not for you! I personally use the XP-Pen Deco 03 (top pressure sensibility, quite big, around $90) but prices go from 30€ to 1000€, so you have plenty to choose from and the quality has nothing to envy from Wacom, which is the most known graphic tablet brand. I did plenty of research when buying my tablet, but I can't really recommend any software as I have only used Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI. Haven't had any problem linking software and hardware, everything has always gone super fluid.

Don’t count out the newer iPads! It’s not just the Pro models. I have a Wacom I used for years and got an 2018 iPad base model for 200$(sale from Verizon) when I went back to school for notes and ended up getting an Apple Pencil(gen 1 works with any iPad made after 2018 and I believe they go for 99) later that year. In the 2 years of using it I’ve made it my new go to tablet for design, illustration and photo editing & thanks to duet and Luna display you can use it as a standalone or a “monitor tablet” connected to windows and older macs, newer macs are supported for free natively using sidecar. Add in the fact there’s plenty of great free apps for drawing on the iPad & the 200-300$ price point it’s a no brainer. You get a drawing tablet and an iPad all in one. 2048 pressure levels on the 2018 base model btw.
