In this video I asked people to give their impression of Dutch. Then have them listen to a clip of Dutch from and imitate what they heard. The clip I used is from the Christmas address of King Willem Alexander.
Here is the content of the sample audio transcribed by "brucenator". You can also click CC to see them in the video.
I know most people in the Netherlands may not speak as formally as the King giving his Christmas message. If you know any videos of Dutch that sounds more conversational and natural, feel free to let me know in the comments. I might use it my future videos about Dutch. Thank you!

To be fair, most of us English speakers speak neither Dutch nor German and both of them possess many phonological similarities which at many times may sound alike. I don't know how does German sound like to a Dutch but non-native German speaker here, Dutch sounds like a weird German dialect (Low Saxon in particular) with a hint of English that has gone too soft until you can't understand shit at all, imho

+DutchBeeVlog Ja, ik snap het wel een beetje, we liggen naast elkaar. Maar dan nog is Nederlands veel zachter en heeft het invloed gehad op het Engels en heeft het Engels daarna weer invloed op het Nederlands gehad, waardoor Nederlands op een afstandje voor Engelse klinkt als Engels. Pas als ze op gaan letten is het duidelijk dat het geen Engels is.

But it's true, sure Dutch doesn't really sound like a Hitler speech but German sure does, he was speaking German after all, however it's still somewhat true, especially for people that haven't heard any other German/Dutch speak, Hitler is the one person many of them have heard speak and German especially is very rough and harsh sounding, it's somewhat similar to people speaking Chinese, no matter what they are saying it sounds like they are angry. Because of the tone and manner you have to say many words it sounds aggressive, especially to people that speak languages that don't use the same letter grouping that German/Dutch does.

Well actually it is not really a misconception. both are west-germanic languages the vocabulairy is quite simular and German and Dutch are more related to each other than most other Germanic languages, except for Afrikaans, which is deriven from Dutch. But since Dutch is a Germanic language it makes sense to compare them. However most people should be able to hear the differences aswell. Despite my name sounds German, I am Dutch and so is my family tree. Besides Dutch I speak English German and Swedish(all germanic languages). Swedish and Dutch are also remarkably simular to each other in vocabulary and some grammar. So if someone would say dutch is like Swedish I would definately not be offended or surprised, because it is just true. I am more surprised by the stupidity of many Americans who do not realise that they also speak a germanic language.

Duits en Nederlands (en Engels, Noors, Zweeds en IJslands) zijn allemaal ontstaan uit het Germaans, daarom lijken ze op elkaar. Neemt niet weg dat de talen heel erg van elkaar verschillen, maar er zijn wel degelijk overeenkomsten, dus helemaal verkeerd is de vergelijking niet.

RockPolish You are right, I'm either gonna include that in "Vlaams vs Nederlands-Nederlands" or make it a separate video if people can't tell the difference. No point asking people's preference if they can't notice any difference. I'm planning to use Disney movies dubbed in both Flemish and Dutch of NL for the experiment, since they would be spoken with almost the same words in almost the same voice. This way people can focus on the sound of the language.

I am Dutch. German and Dutch are heavily linked languages (same language family) . Not very strange that most foreigners compare these to languages. German however is "softer" in most of its sounds. I deal a lot with British people. In general they compare Dutch with a "throat disease" which clarifies a lot.

+sophie manetti Dutch is just a German dialect. The English people even gave the Dutch language the wrong name.
@TheRealTricky
@TheRealTricky 8 жыл бұрын
+Eik That is entirely incorrect. Many people falsely believe that. Dutch is older than German for starters, and German is not a dialect of Dutch either. They are two languages formed independently from each other from the same parent "Diets". You could consider the two languages as "siblings", but not as dialects from each other.

As an American who is learning Dutch, the language can sound fairly different depending on what is being said and by who. However to me it sounds like heavily accented English when being spoken clearly and slowly. Conversational Dutch sort of sounds like a more thought out Swedish chef. It sounds most like old English, but that comparison seemed cheap because old English and Dutch are objectively similar. Sometimes it can sound like Spanish or French, but the more I get used to it the more it just sounds like Dutch.

I grew up in the Reformed Church In America which the latest name of the Dutch Reformed Church which came here in 1628. after the war we had some immigrants coming in so you heard it spoken at times. What you don't hear anymore is Jersey Dutch, A dialect that developed here mixing Dutch with English, some French from the Huguenots and Leni Lenape Indian. The syntax is English though. It died out two generations ago but can still be heard in the Ramapos in Northern New Jersey and lower New York. It developed the same way as Afrikaans did. Separated from the Fatherland for centuries it picked up all the words from the host country, mixed them in and developed a new pronunciation of the Dutch words. New Yorkers use some of the Dutch pronunciations without realizing it. The word "whore" is not pronounced as "hor" but "hu-er which is Dutch. We don't have front steps in front of the house but a "Stoop" (stoep). The Reformed Church has done everything it can to destroy any link to the Fatherland and especially its language. The idea was to grow by picking up non-Dutch descendants. Instead it drove us out as it became weak in theological and doctrinal beliefs in trying to appeal to the outsiders. Most of us who left the NY/NJ area became Presbyterians, a theological and doctrinal sister although with a different Confession and Catechism. In return we have introduced them to the Canons of the Synod of Dort and the singing of Psalms in addition to their hymns. The people trying to separate us used the saying, "If you're only Dutch you're out touch". We responded with " If you aren't Dutch you aren't much". The RCA is another mainline church that is dying like the rest and eventually will be part of the merger that must take place soon before they're all dead. Then they'll be like the United Church of Canada which despite the merger there is still dying. To hear Dutch still spoken go to Western Michigan in particular Grand Rapids and Holland. The people there speak Dutch and many can still speak Frisian which most are. The names like Eddinga, Palsma are more Frisian than Dutch names with the Patronymics and van something or other. They've only been here since the 19th century whereas families like mine date to the early 1600s.

Finally... people from other countries think VERY often that German is the same as Dutch. My boyfriend in LA even wanted to buy a Dutch lesson book, and the owner of the shop sold him a German lesson book. So my bf said, that is not Dutch, but German, but he said it WAS Dutch. So I am happy to hear that the girl in the beginning said 'I know how German sound like' basically saying the knows it are 2 diffrent languages.

All joking aside: go back and ask the people in this video how they feel about the fact that they don't even know what Dutch sounds like, while most Dutch people speak English. And many speak German. And a slightly smaller part of the population also speaks French. Then ask them how they feel about the fact that many Dutch people master the English language better than the average US citizen.

Although learning another language depends largely on the person, the US government put out a list of the easiest to hardest languages for English speakers to learn. Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish were among the easiest. The structure and vocabulary are very similar to English. Even the pronunciation is easy to pick up. German, however, is a bit more difficult for the average English speaker to learn according to the list put out by the US gov. Its grammar is very complex.

It's so funny how much people think German sound exactly the same as Dutch. While our language came from them (with some other languages bound to it). it's actually totally not German. Otherwise I would speak fluently German xD Why is it so that for English Dutch is so hard, while most of them, if they believe German is the same, speak way better German then Dutch? From Holland myself (Do know, Holland is only South and North Holland of the Netherlands, not the other 10 provinces).

Remco F. Gerritsen So is there a Dutch spoken when people from different parts the Netherlands come together? I used the Kings speech because I thought he would speak some form of Dutch everyone accepts. Did you see the video I made about German? Many German viewers think the German mimicked by people sounds like Dutch.

A dutch spoken? Don't really get the sentence there. But yeah, when we all come together, we just speak Dutch mainly. Besides when where drunk xD or somethimes angry. Then the language is being used is the same as everywhere. Jubberish xD (Or however you wanna call it xD) Its a good idea to use the Kings speech. Even if he's a bit more upper class. We can all understand it quite well. Though if you would let me re=speak it I really do need the paper with me, because my memory isn't that good. (And I didn't actually looked at the speech). Not yet, but do have got many vids to watch, so maybe soon:)

oh yeah, and dutch and english are brother and sister language's, thats why english is so easy for us it only the sentence structure is different like '' i went to the store yesterday'' would be if i litterely translated it back and fourth, ''i went yesterday to the store '' get it ?

oh wait i get it , well let's say '' did you really have to tell him that '' would be in our language ''moest je hem dat nou echt vertellen'' and that translated literally in english would be '' did you him that really have to tell '' see so like we have the same kind of word for everything but just the structure of the sentence and of course the word's itself are different.

I made another video about Flemish. Unlike the Dutch of NL which people assumed sounds like German before they listened to the real thing. They think Flemish sounds like German even after hearing Flemish. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5CYfn-YaZJ5jrs
