I'm Dutch and I too didn't understand the joke at first. We learn a lot of English words, but I've never heard of "hymen".

Here is a dutch saying: "kut mijn klote fiets is weer eens gestolen", it means: We will allways be together 💞

I think I'm one of not a lot of Dutchmen that actually understands what a hymen is, but I could still relate with that Dutch audience! I'd definitely see Dutch people doing exactly that.

I sincerely hope he realises in dutch 'hyman' is actually a last name. It's spelt diffently but it sounds the same. And it doesn't have the same meaning as it does in english. THAT'S why he got funny looks.

In the Netherlands, the last name "Heijman" isn't unusual. No fun and no pun there.

We actually have a saying for that: lachen als een boer met kiespijn. (laughing like a farmer with touthache)

Another reason why the Dutch probably didn't get it, is that Hyman is actually a pretty common Dutch surname. In fact, chances are great that she has Dutch ancestors. So our brain inmediately recognizes the word as something very normal. Thumbs up for this video this guy is funny.

Tbh, I don't think the audience laughed just to be polite. They all went to an English speaking comedian, so they all felt pretty confident about their english skills, therefore I bet many people laughed because they didn't want to seem stupid.

i'm Dutch and have gotten into so much trouble over the years with the non-dutch lol. took me quite some time before I figured it out. its all about not-confronting people with uncomfortable things, it freaks them out, especially the British but many cultures have this notion of using the love-blanket, they know its there, just ignore it, and then the Dutch come in......seriously, its both hilarious, exhausting and confusing. even in plain business its a continuous battle.

As a dutch guy i recognize this. I miss my country like that. These days if you make a joke they first look of you did not hurt somebody's soul

I loved Adam Hills' reaction when he saw the signer make the sign for hymen.
