People slept on Emery's Villarreal getting to a CL semi with these principles. He's managed to create a system that seems perfect for an upper/mid-table club who need to compete with big teams who dominate the ball and smaller teams who will sit in and defend off the ball.

People really don’t know Emery, i follow him since the time he was at Valencia in 2008/2012. He was one of the few coaches who could give that all star Barcelona team coached by Guardiola tough games. His reputation was tarnished by Psg bcs he had to coach a team full of egomaniacs and Arsenal who was just a mess at the time. Im glad he is getting the respect he deserves one of the best football tacticians in the world.

To succeed as a manager it’s not enough that your tactics are bulletproof but you need to able to educate your players on positions, movements and tactics of your football. This requires a group of players who are willing to listen and learn from you. Thats more important than anything at the highest level when assembling a team. Because at the end of the day - the faith and willingness of players to execute on the managers tactics is what plays out on the field in a game. The manager is not the main driver but the players are. This is why clubs where you have toxic know it alls and unprofessionals among the players doesn’t succeed - examples are Chelsea and Manchester United. Poch and Ten Hag are not bad managers - their players don’t have any discipline to execute their tactics in a game especially when things aren’t going their way. Every manager at this level has outstanding tactics and footballing brain. Some are probably slightly better but the reason teams perform differently is inherently down to how much the players understand a managers tactics and is willing to give 100% towards it.

This is Ten Hag's fault for not building the right gameplan at the start of this season and not have decent back up plan in place. Players like Bruno, Rashford are counter attacking machines at the end of the day. What's even more insulting is Ten Hag got it horribly wrong in Sancho and Antony. The actual reason why Sancho doing so well at Dortmund is the gameplan Sancho is in, specifically Lucien Favre's tactics Borussia Dortmund in 3 years (18/19 season to 20/21 season). btw I watched a lot of Bayern and Dortmund games so I fully understand Sancho's tactical profile

@richardroberts95711 ай бұрын
Everton were rancid like villa and now are very well drilled and great to watch. Goes to show players can give it their all to the right man in charge. Dyche is underrated. He doesn't get the tools like most managers get. Yet gets the most out of players. Sometimes a manager is better at motivation while others are great at coaching. Unai coaching but maybe lacks motivation skills as he's known to fall out with players. Dyche a motivation guy. Loyal to a fault but won't get mentioned for his teams style in a positive way. But fair play to him and Everton you look good. His critics can piss off as far as im concerned. A good guy I'm sure those relegation scraps are well gone now for Everton. Good luck for the season. And I might also add ten point deduction was criminal. Especially when nothing was hidden and honesty was given on the offset. Chelsea and man city though are different circumstances should be penalised more as they actively hide and hire elite lawyers to make it go away. That lacks credibility. Everton despite the faults of the guys running the club was at least forthright in owning up to their slight misdeeds.

Emery also has a way with mid tier (financially) teams. Teams that are not quite Man City rich but have enough resources and pedigree to push for a top 4 finish and maybe even win the Europa League. The Villarreals, Sevillas, and now Aston Villa. You don't expect them to win the League but you expect them in contention for Europe. Maybe one day he'll finish what he's cooking and win a top 5 league with a mid tier team.

Villa have the second wealthiest owners in the league after Newcastle (third if you consider City owned by the UAE rather than Sheikh Mansour). The only thing holding us back in terms of finance is revenue, as FFP regulation means that teams cannot spend like City and Chelsea have done in the past. This is why Chelsea's spending was such a big deal last January, with the accounting trick of amortisation allowing them to skirt FFP regulation. Even still, Villa are 8th in terms of squad value, 2m below Newcastlein 7th but 150m above Brighton in 9th. Add on the extra European spot and it's clear there's a Big 8 in the PL now with Villa among them. And Villa have a very demanding fanbase due to being one of the most successful English clubs in history. Add to that even more demanding owners who have came out on multiple occasions saying that they wanna secure Villa in the top 4. All we needed was someone good enough to put thigs together on the footballing side. Emery is so much more than "good enough" - he is literally *the guy*. The video above proves that.
@austinedeclan1011 ай бұрын
@bacchic6676 Still Villa have not been expected to challenge anything in recent seasons. You've been a second division team within the last 10 years and you sold your captain and best play in a while to a 'super club' not too long ago. You're are one level below the 'super clubs'. This is not an insult or a knock against Villa. It simply makes what Villa have achieved the more impressive.

This might be an unpopular opinion and don't me wrong Villa are decent but I think they have been more lucky than good. There was a phase that Emery went through with Arsenal where he went unbeaten for like 25 games but after that the collapse started and they could not recover and the underlying numbers indicated that Arsenal were lucky. Villa's expected points indicates that they should have at least 6-8 points fewer than they have and even the eye test shows that they are winning some games that may not be deserved. Again they are playing great football but not good enough to compete for the title. Man City will are an unstoppable juggernaut and will be favorites to win. The crucial thing for Villa will be how they perform in the last 10 games. If they are up for it I see them challenging for the top 4
@user-ed7et3pb4o11 ай бұрын
it's an unpopular opinion because it's already been disproved. You clearly haven't really been watching Villa. They have already performed like this for more than an entire calendar year - it's not a purple patch. Emery has already surpassed his form at Arsenal, and there's no signs of it slowing down. In fact, this couldn't be more different to Arsenal in terms of how much trust and buy-in and support he actually has. He's also surpassed Pep's win rate that he had in his first 50 games for City. Villa have had their best start to a season EVER, and every other season they had a start like this they went on to win the league. Already if you look at all the points gained in 2023 they are second only to Man City - who are now looking the weakest they've ever looked under Pep. And the thing is, all of this is now backed up by underlying numbers - not luck. It's not a sudden patch of form, it's a sustained and continuous show of real results backed up by real changes that are observable in the data. I'm not saying Villa will go on to win the league. But I am saying that they have every likelihood of maintaining solid form for the rest of the season, and every chance of finishing in the top 3.

After reviewing the underlying numbers and the current squad depth, I'm willing to bet on my bottom buck that Villa won't finish in the top 3.
