Apparently, Aloha Stadium was built with something called Weathering Steel. The idea was that the steel would develop a layer of rust that would protect the underlying steel. The problem was that the steel just kept rusting because of the humid tropical climate in Hawaii. The steel has almost completely rusted through the stadium in many places, rendering it unsafe for any event. The old Omni in Atlanta suffered from the same problem. They thought the rust would be some sort of protective layer but it just kept on rusting.

I heard the rust was so bad in the omni to where there was holes and people were able to sneak in to games for free.

The fact that they were able to rotate the oval into a diamond-shaped stadium is pretty awesome. I loved the Pro Bowl in Hawaii and even the times when the Rainbow Warriors would host big-time football teams. Sad that this stadium is empty now but I gotta see where the Warriors are playing today. Good stuff

You and a bunch of us loved the Pro Bowl at Hawaii. I especially loved it the week after the Super Bowl. Back then the Super Bowl ended in January due to the 14 game schedule. I used to love when they played some games at regular NFL stadiums. I think the last time they did that( before Aloha Stadium took the lead) was in 1978 at the LA Coliseum. That was before Aloha Stadium took over in 1979

Probably the best example of a baseball/football multi-purpose stadium (which isn't saying much).

Awesome work! I've been there for hundreds of games, Pro Bowls, UH Rainbow Warrior Games, Islander games and even saw The Police, Bruno Mars and Snoop Dogg there. Was always a dump, but it was our dump!

My understanding is that the salt air coming off the ocean has a very corrosive effect on stadiums and this stadium aged very quickly versus other places.

It’s not just stadiums that corrode. On Hatteras Island, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, people joke that plastic rusts there due to the salt air.

The new Aloha Stadium was looking to open in 2023, then 2025, 2027, and now 2028. All of us in Hawaii aren't holding our breath. And due to the lack of crowd seating at the university stadium, U.H. football may have to go down to Division II.

Another thing that hurt Aloha Stadium over time was the fact there were no amenities at all. It’s literally just a stadium, everything in it was basic, no fancy eating places, no business suites, nothing at all. Hence the new project really pitched the “entertainment district” aspect of it. And considering the highly touted rail system drops off at this spot, it was supposed to be the next big thing. It’s all gone to shit though.

Just went there. Although I knew the stadium was closed, we went to the Swap Meet/ Flea Market and it was wonderful... until we needed to use the restrooms. Could smell the toilets 10ft before the entrance. I thought I was entering a "porta potty" or "outhouse" situation but it was a fully functioning toilet facility. No excuses for the stench. So sad cuz it seemed like a probably good facility. So sad.

Aloha Stadium is vintage and worn out by weather conditions. But it was cheap materials to built the stadium. Hawaii taxpayers are paying fund to Aloha Stadium since 1970s. It was great profit from NFL Pro Bowl and college football bowl games. After the football season was over. It ain’t enough to collect finance from sponsors. For baseball season, it was empty Stadium. Nobody ain’t interested to see the baseball games. It caused Aloha Stadium to prevented by weather conditions or sponsors. I believe construction companies will built new modern stadium near campus or on old Aloha Stadium. It need to improve luxury suites, club seats, regular seats and fancy bars and restaurants on new stadium. I think spectators will attract to go to new stadium to see sports games. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football team Professional soccer team Concerts Rodeos Religious events Political parties General events It’ll be greatest profits after new modern stadium will be open. I don’t know when will they demolish and built new field.

Ngl I think they should keep using the stadium by now when you look at the rust to me it looks like dust that they never cleaned and when you go to buy an aloha seat you may see alot of new chairs and new flooring.the reason why they thought it was dangerous was because it was shaking.to me I think the reason why it’s shaking is because of the wheels or what controlled it to move.it still looks pretty strong.also if there’s rust just check what side has the worst rust to not use that side or just fix it.the reason why I’m confused about them not fixing it is the fact that it cost 200M+ to rebuild it while it cost 500M+ for the new one.if you look at the new one it looks like it’s so open air meaning that rain and wind from the ocean will make it worst even thought aloha stadium has a small roof atleast it can cover some of the seats.but also with the new aloha stadium build there is very less parking but more buildings like buildings for visitors. To me the new aloha stadium just looks like a waste.the aloha stadium we have now could’ve been repaired but they say they can’t repair or just rebuild the thing. Because it could last over 46 years.

If it was cheaper to renovate why didn't they?
@seand1011
@seand1011 Жыл бұрын
Salty sea air can cause metal to rust or otherwise corrode. That's why they have to tear it down and build a whole new facility with better materials that can withstand the corrosion.
@Z64sports

@@seand1011 Now they do because they waited too long but I mean before. It would have been cheaper but of course they didn't know at the time

From 1975 to 1987 inclusive the Hawaii Islanders AAA baseball team layer there. 8 years with the Padres, then 4 with the Pirates and then the final with the White Sox. In 1988 they moved to Colorado Springs but the White Sox did not keep them despite the fitting new name of Sky Sox. Instead they partnered with the Indians now known as the Guardians.

All except the Aloha Stadium is useful, they're not empty 😂 Camping World Stadium hosted two bowl games, including the newly named Pop-Tarts Bowl 🙂 Braves moved to Cobb County for the more affluent season ticket holders, they could have stayed downtown 😕
