Anyone that's into backpacking, hunting, or backcountry fishing can relate I'm sure. I just switched from a backpack to a sling pack for the summer. It took me hours to figure out how to condense everything for the lighter pack. Also, having to leave flies behind was almost more than my ocd brain could handle!

I fly fished the Naches in Eastern Washington as a teen 37 years ago. Being prepared is key. I tie my own flies and keep a little material in my pack to tie on the go. I was using a Royal Coachman and had no luck...until I noticed a bug similar to the Coachman but it had white wings. I grabbed my thread and some goose quill and tied and cemented the "wings". Waited a bit for it to dry...first cast BOOM 18 inch trout. A guy next to me asked what I was using, I said a Royal Coachman...he said he was also but no luck...second cast BOOM 17 inch trout...he got huffy and moved along. The moral of the story is be nice and maybe you will get help with what to use. I figure he was mad because I was 16 and he was in his 40s haha!

I need to level up! To tie a fly while fishing is a new level - catch a 18" fish on that same fly, leveled up again! Great story and thanks for sharing!

Amazing the similarities to my bag. Only difference is I use a fanny pack that is a bit smaller so I need to change out the boxes between trips since I cannot bring them all. I also have some immodium as well as ibuprofen and some wipes just in case of a stream side emergency! I had to add a clip-on magnifier since I cannot see as well anymore to tie on those small files. Definitely agree on the lip balm with sunscreen. Idea for another video: top 10 (or 20 or 30) patterns (including colors and sizes) to have for our local rivers and lakes. I know I have gaps in my assortment of flies that I need to fill in plus it would be great for those new to the sport to get them started.

Do you find the net banging against your knee/calf annoying? I used a an Orvis Guide sling pack and like your Simms it went over my right shoulder. The problem was the best attachment for a net was a D ring that sat high behind my right shoulder, and since I’m right handed it was impossible to grab my net with my left hand to land a fish. So I set it up like you appear to have done, attaching it to a point on the strap that placed it at my left hip. Easy to grab with my left hand but everytime I walk any distance it is aggravating as it bounces against my IT band (which I injured long ago) or back of my knee/calf. I see Orvis’s newer sling bag goes over the left shoulder. I suspect this is a much better design as it corrects the net issue so you can have it up behind your left shoulder now, and I suspect it feels better having the shoulder strap on your non-casting arm. But I instead went with a chest bag, one by Umpqua which I like so far. I try to be a minimalist, but I hike in quite a bit and appreciate the ability to carry plenty of food, drink, and such. I wasn’t a fan of stuff in front of me all the time but have gotten used to it and find it quicker and easier to dry a fly or make a change with everything right there. I also like the net carrying strap high on the back so I can carry a larger net and its mostly out of the way.
@FlyFishDan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob - I have solved this problem with the net hanging too low. My sling pack has a large 'D' ring on top, I use a lanyard from Simms designed for a wading stick (has great retraction) and keeps the net up high and ever below my waste. Easy for me to reach around and grab the basket of the net and doesn't get in the way. Thanks for the great comments and for taking the time to watch. Cheers!

The only thing that you were missing in that bag there’s a 15 piece bucket of Kentucky fried chicken. Your freshwater fly fisherman sure carry a lot of stuff in your bag. Someday maybe I will get a chance to fish the rivers. Really does look fun in those beautiful places to go to. U guy’s rock. As for now I will keep fishing on my island peace out

Another great video! I live on the west side of Washington. Do you ever find yourself wanting a waterproof sling? Any benefit to one, or is it ok to just dry your gear when you get home?

Thank you! I’ve actually been putting some thought behind it, especially since I’m getting out there more often during the colder/wetter months. Today, my gear bag goes in my fishing room all laid out to dry. I also open up all my fly boxes to make sure nothing gets rusty inside. Cheers!

No safety/emergency/medical stuff?? At the very least, carry some tape and/or superglue, which can be a temporary fix for cuts. It takes up almost no room and can be very handy for other stuff too. And maybe you have covered this, but I would strongly suggest any fisherman carry a PLB, especially if you're soloing anywhere.

That's about the same amount of stuff I carry in to work everyday! I get bored very easy, and I can't do 1 thing at a time. I work in an auto plant, 12 hour days, so I bring lots of reading materials, my smartphone ,2 tablets, books, crossword puzzles, etc.. Everybody thinks I'm moving in! Same goes for how I pack for a fishing trip, whether off the bank or in a boat!

That scene where you opened your fly box and there was a dropper rig wadded up in there is all wrong! Next time you buy chicken or a steak wash the foam tray and cut it so it fits In a small zip lock bag ....wrap them up nice and neat...I can get about 10 pre rigged ones on the size foam I use....tight lines! P.s. I didn't see any bug dope! I live in black fly country....if you value your face you'll be sure to always have bug dope!
